evolved throughout the ages? This week, Tidbits explores the progress made over the centuries.

• Archaeologists generally divide prehistoric eras into three ages – the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age – named such for the mate-rial used for making implements and weapons. During the Stone Age, stone was fashioned with a sharp edge or a point, with the oldest known stone tools excavated from several sites in what is now Ethiopia. bronze in the manufacture of tools and weapons. The Iron Age occurred between 1200 and 600 B.C., when the harder and tougher iron replaced bronze. Cultural changes accompanied the dif-ference in metal, as newer agricultural practices, religious beliefs, and artistic styles evolved. Deco-rative designs on ornaments and pottery became prevalent. Blacksmiths were hammering items into shape, advancing away from the Bronze Age’s method of casting.

• According to Greek mythology, there are several stages of human existence on Earth. During the Golden Age, the first race of mortals, dubbed the golden race (meaning good and noble), was creat-ed by the gods and held conversations with them. There was an endless abundance of food and no need for agriculture. This age was characterized by peace, harmony, and prosperity. The mortals lived to an old age while maintaining their youth-ful appearance, and eventually died very peaceful deaths. The Silver Age followed, with the mortals described as foolish and immature, who refused to worship the gods and goddesses. According to mythology, this so angered Zeus, he destroyed the silver race. The mortals of the mythological Bronze Age were hardened and tough, caught up in wars. This race was undone by their own vio-lence. The Heroic Age was the period of heroes who fought at Troy. In the Iron Age, pain and evil ran rampant, with humans living in toil and mis-ery, and with no shame over wrongdoing.

• The period of European history from the 5th to the 15th centuries is referred to as the Middle Ages. It began after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the abdication of Romulus Augustus in the year 476. The early Middle Ages were called the Dark Ages, lasting until about 1000, during which time there was a drastic deterioration in cultural development and the economy, as well as an increase in wars. The part of the Middle Ages commonly known as the Medieval Period, began around 1000, and continued until the Renais-sance began in the 16th century. Gothic art and architecture appeared during this era.

• The Age of Discovery started in the early 1400s and continued to the 1600s. Also called the Age of Exploration, it was the time when Europeans began travels in search of new sea trade routes to what they thought were the East Indies. The Por-tuguese and Spanish dominated the exploration – Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Balboa, Cortes, Ponce de Leon, and, of course, Columbus were the lead-ers of the more well-known voyages of discovery.

• When the Earth undergoes a long-term reduction in surface and atmospheric temperatures, glaciers and ice sheets may expand. This is known as an ice age, or more accurately, a glacial age. Experts say there have been at least five major ice ages over the Earth’s history. They are probably the result of an interaction between very small changes in the Earth’s orbit, changes in ocean currents, and changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We can see the effects of glaciers across the continent – the Great Lakes and most of Minnesota’s and Wisconsin’s lakes were carved out by glaciers and filled up with melting water.

• During the 17th and 18th centuries, the world

moved into the Age of Enlightenment, a cultural movement promoted by the intellectuals of that time, such as Isaac Newton and Voltaire. They at-tempted to lead the world away from superstition, irrationality, and tyranny and toward knowledge through science and reason. It was based on faith in nature and belief in human progress, with hos-tility toward organized religion and monarchy. The “enlightened” believed that people were natu-rally good and would work to further the happi-ness of others.

• The period between 1750 and 1850 was the Indus-trial Age, when dramatic advances in manufac-turing, transportation, and technology produced powerful changes in the economy and culture. The introduction of steam power and improve-ments in mining created huge advancements. Manufacturing machines allowed mass produc-tion of goods.

• The 1920s, commonly called the Roaring Twen-ties, was a time of economic prosperity and rapid industrial growth. Drastic social changes came along, including the growth of jazz music, which was so popular that the decade became known as the Jazz Age. The sounds of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, and Benny Goodman dominated popular music. It was a time of breaking with tradition and turning toward modern technology. Young people took joy in shocking the older generation – women bobbed their hair and wore short skirts with silk stocking, taking on the nickname “Flap-pers.” The Jazz Age came tumbling down on Oc-tober 29, 1929, with the crash of the stock market, ushering in the Great Depression.

• We entered the Atomic Age when the first atom-ic bomb was detonated over Japan in 1945. The phrase Atomic Age was invented by a New York Times journalist named William Laurence, who was the official journalist for the U.S. Manhat-tan Project, which developed the first nuclear weapons. After witnessing the Japan bombings, he wrote a series of articles supporting the advan-tages of the new weapon.

• Today we are part of the Information (or Digital) Age, characterized by our increases in technology and how we receive our information. We are also in the Social Age, which places more emphasis on people’s needs through various social networks.

---------------------------------------------------------FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD:

MARIE CURIEOften referred to as the “Mother of Modern Phys-

ics,” Marie Curie was the first famous woman sci-entist in the modern world. Here’s your opportu-nity to learn more about the woman who made many significant contributions to the research of radioactivity.

• Born in Poland in 1867 to a physics teacher fa-ther and an educator mother, Marie enrolled at the Sorbonne in Paris for her higher education. She graduated first in the class of physics and in second place in mathematics, and immediately began work as a researcher.

• Alongside her fellow researcher husband, Pierre

Curie, the pair studied the elements and radioac-tivity. Marie was the first to discover radioactivity in an element, thorium. She and Pierre went on to discover two new elements, polonium (which she named for her native Poland) and radium. As a result of her 1903 dissertation on radium, she was awarded a doctorate in science, the first ever for a woman in all of Europe. The Curies received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 for their work, and Marie became the first woman to be awarded this prestigious prize. Their prize winnings were poured back into their research.

• The year 1904 was an eventful one for Marie – she was awarded a professorship at the Sorbonne, es-tablished the use of radiation therapy for cancer, and gave birth to her second child. Just two years later, Pierre was run over by a horse-drawn car-riage in Paris and died, leaving Marie a widow at age 37 with two young daughters to raise alone. Shortly afterward, she was awarded Pierre’s de-partment chair position at the Sorbonne, becom-ing the first woman ever to hold a

chair there, and the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne. Although she was offered a national pension following Pierre’s death, she declined it.

• Marie’s second Nobel Prize came along in 1911, this time in the field of Chemistry, for her isola-tion of pure radium. This set her apart as the only woman to win the Nobel Prize in two different fields up to that date. This time, Marie donated her prize money toward equipping World War I ambulances with portable X-ray machines, as well as establishing 200 permanent X-ray stations in France and Belgium.

• The laboratories of the Radium Institute at the University of Paris opened in 1914, and the Cu-rie Foundation was established in 1920 to work toward applying radium in medical procedures. Marie’s daughter Irene joined her mother in her research at the Institute.

• Marie Curie certainly passed on her brilliance to the next generation. In 1934, her daughter Irene and her husband discovered artificial radioactiv-ity, an accomplishment for which they received a Nobel Prize in 1935. Unfortunately, Marie did not live to see her daughter’s award. Seemingly unaware of the effects of radioactivity on human health during all her years of research, Marie con-tracted leukemia, most likely due to her prolonged exposure. She died a few months after Irene’s dis-covery. Sadly, Irene developed leukemia as well and died from the effects of radiation exposure. The Curies’ notebooks recording their research remain so radioactive today that they still cannot be handled without protection, and are stored in lead-lined boxes.

• The name Curie is a household word among sci-entists, as it is used as the name of the unit of measure for radioactivity.

Nearing the end of the regular season, the Gree-ley Central Wildcats came into this game hop-ing to gain more confidence when they faced one of the best teams in all of 4A . With Broom-field sitting atop the 4A northern, the Wildcats found themselves in a three way tie for a second place with Thompson Valley and Longmont. Coach Graefe knew the chances of winning the 4A Northern at this point would be tough but if they could compete with the Eagles at home, where they were undefeated; then per-haps his team would prove it was ready for post-season play.

This game was a battle the entire way with no team really gaining an edge. Broomfield fin-ished the 1st period with 14 while Central scored 10. However, Greeley Central put to-gether a better performance in the second, giv-ing them a 1 point lead at the half.

In the end, Broomfield found a way to remain perfect at home and delivered a tough loss to

the Wildcats; 52-50. A loss is a loss but Greeley Central played an exceptional game thanks in part to this week’s Loveland Ford Player of the game, Jevon Martinez. The junior Wildcat fin-ished with 21 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals.

With that loss, Greeley Cen-tral dropped to 4th in the 4A northern but with two games remaining, they still have op-portunities to improve their standings.

Next week, 1310 KFKA gets set for the Patriot League Tournament for coverage on both Friday and Saturday

night. Don’t miss a second of the action and be sure to tune into 1310 KFKA; the leader in Northern Colorado Preps coverage.

NOTE THAT GAMES MAY HAVE BEEN PLAYED AFTER THIS ISSUE OF TIDBITS WAS RELEASED. SOME RANKINGS AND RECORDS MAY BE OUTDATED.

At a loss for names for the characters, Reeves asked Jim Carmichael, who also worked on the cartoons, for suggestions. Carmichael was busy with his own work, but in glancing down at the newspaper on his desk he noticed Thomas E. Dewey and Huey P. Long were both mentioned in headlines, so he suggested Huey and Dewey. A friend named Louie Schmitt stopped in to say hello at that moment, so he added Louie as the third nephew.

Here’s an experiment in human relations you can do: Walk down the street and as you pass peo-ple, smile at them and attempt to engage their eyes without a greeting. Very few people will actually look at you and acknowledge that you are on the same planet let alone within an arm’s length of each other.

We tend to lock the doors of our lives for the same reason we lock the doors to our homes, to keep us safe from unwanted, unknown intruders. Even though most of us don’t look like axe mur-derers, the strangers we pass by everyday seldom acknowledge us nor do we acknowledge them. We feel safer when we move at a quick pace with our arms crossed about our chest and our eyes cast downward. It’s the natural thing to do, I suppose, to protect our selves. And who’s to criticize, what with all the nightly news reports of kidnappings, mur-ders, and bizarre incidents.

I’m not talking about the acute fear of strangers referred to as Xenophobia; I’m talking about the normal, everyday experience of protecting our-selves from those we don’t know or don’t want to know. Socially healthy people willingly open a door or two of their hearts from time to time.

I’ve identified seven reasons socially healthy peo-ple open their private heart doors to others. They are: to play, to abate loneliness, to calm fears, to work, to solve problems, to grow, and to love. I will discuss one area each week for the next six weeks. Here’s the first…

The First Time We Open Our Livesto Others is To Play

It was a hot day in August, 1956 in Council Bluffs, Iowa when I saw a moving truck at the big white house across our back yard and on the other side of the street. After the truck left I noticed a kid about my age sitting on the front porch steps. He looked terribly lonely there all by himself. I could almost

feel him calling me to invite him over. Bravely, I walked through the vacant lot and up to his porch and introduced myself. He was quite happy to have found a new friend in this big town he had just moved to.

As children we actually ache for friendship, so are quite good at welcoming strangers into our lives. We want playmates. We ask our mother if we can go over to our friend’s house to play or if they can come and spend the night with us. As we grow, we let others into our lives to play when we join a club, play team sports, or develop personal friend-ships based on hobbies or other leisure pursuits.

And it’s good for us. When we play we learn about life. We learn to share, to win, to lose, to fight, to make peace, and to compromise. We discover that people are different and that some are nice and some are not. We discover appropriate and inap-propriate behavior.

Through play and friendship we discern the un-written laws of the relational universe. We find out-lets for our aggression, we develop problem solving skills, we find relief from stress, we learn about our own likes and dislikes.

As we age, we become more cautious. As we “grew up” and as we played with others we learned that some people ridicule us, exclude us, ignore us, gossip about us, or find our tender spot and go out of their way to hurt us. So when outside of our com-fort zone of trusted friends and loved ones, we fold our arms across our chest, cast our eyes downward, and pick up our pace.

Only if we could, like innocent children, interact and enjoy each other’s company without suspicion about intentions, uncertainty about the prudence of the connection, or fear of being hurt. Wouldn’t it be grand if we could regain our innocent, childlike interest in others? Our lives would be better and the world would be a better place to live, don’t you think?
