It’s a good day for a field trip and Tidbits is off to the zoo! If you’re interested in animal menager-ies, you’ve come to the right place!

• Archaeological excavations have revealed the oldest known zoological collection in Hierakon-polis, Egypt, believed to have been created by Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut around 1500 B.C. The emperor of China Wen Wan established a 1,500-acre zoological garden about 1000 B.C., dubbing it the Garden of Intelligence.

world is Vienna, Austria’s Schonbrunn Zoo, established in 1752, and still receiving more than two million visitors annually. It also holds the honor of being the first place to host the birth of an African elephant in captivity.

• Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the site of Ameri-ca’s first attempt to establish a zoo, creating a charter in 1859. However, construction did not begin immediately due to the advent of the Civil War. In the meantime, New York City opened Central Park Zoo in 1864 and grabbed the honor of the first public zoo in the U.S.

• Although the word “hippopotamus” translates from the Greek for “river horse,” this herbivo-rous mammal is more closely related to the pig. It ranks third in size in land animals, right behind the elephant and rhinoceros. Baby hippos are born underwater and weigh about 100 lbs. at birth. By adulthood, one might weigh as much as 5,800 lbs. Hippos eat about 88 lbs. of food daily. At one time, hippos’ ivory canines, which reach 20 inches in length, were used by dentists for artificial teeth because they don’t turn yellow. In a zoo environment, a hippo will live about 50 years.

• Even with its enormous bulk, the rhinoceros can trot along at 40 mph. The word “rhinoceros” translates from the Greek language, rhino mean-ing “nose” and ceros meaning “horn.” A baby rhino enters the world weighing about 140 lbs. and can grow to about 7,000 lbs.

• You think your blood pressure is high? Consider that of the giraffe, whose pressure is two to three times higher than that of a healthy human. That’s because of that long neck! The heart of a giraffe measures 2 feet long and weighs 25 lbs., ena-bling it to pump blood with enormous force up the neck to the brain. The average giraffe stands about 19 feet tall, 6 feet of which are its legs. At birth it was already 6 feet tall, and had endured a 6-foot drop to the ground head first! The baby calf is up and walking around only one hour af-ter birth. An adult giraffe can weigh up to 3,000 lbs. and lives about 20 years.

• The sleek cheetah, the world’s fastest mammal, can reach a speed of 45 mph in two seconds from a standstill. It then accelerates to its top speed of nearly 65 mph. Yet just 300 yards far-ther on, exhaustion sets in, and the animal must slow down. Half of the cheetah’s running time is spent off the ground, and it can even make a turn in mid-air!

• An African elephant weighs upwards of 6 tons, stands 12 feet tall at the shoulder, and has a trunk about 7 feet long. It consumes about 300

lbs. of food in a day, and sucks up about 2 gal-lons of water into its trunk each time it takes a drink. The elephant is second behind human be-ings in longevity, with many elephants living well past age 70.

• A gorilla may look gargantuan, but in truth the average male gorilla stands only about 5”7” tall. He is a hefty fellow, however, weighing in at 330 lbs. The female is much smaller, averaging 176 lbs. The lifespan of these very peaceful, family-oriented creatures in the wild is about 35 years, but they will live to about age 50 in a zoo.

• An adult male lion eats about 15 lbs. of meat at a meal, although some might consume as much as 60 lbs. at one sitting! The full-grown adult male will weigh somewhere between 330 and 550 lbs. and can run at top speed of 36 mph, although not for very long. In the wilds, the King of the Jungle isn’t the great hunter you might think he is – he actually leaves more than 90% of the hunting to his female companion. Lions are the only big cats in which the appearance of males and females is distinctly different. The roar of a male can be heard as far as 5 miles away.

• Bear with us! An American black bear will reach about 660 lbs. at maturity, and a grizzly bear tops out at 860 lbs., but it’s the polar bear that takes the prize, a whopping 1,760 lbs.! It’s the only bear that will actually prey on humans. Humans aren’t their first choice, however. In their natu-ral habitat, they prefer seal pups, and can smell a seal on the ice 20 miles away. The bears fre-quently eat only the seal’s fat just below the skin, ignoring the rest of the carcass, making for an extremely fatty diet. Yet it doesn’t seem to slow them down! A polar bear can sprint along at a speed of 25 mph for short distances, as well as jump a 6-ft.-high pile of snow.

• The koala bear isn’t a bear at all, but is actually a member of the marsupial family, joining the kangaroo, wallaby, and opossum. The koala’s diet consists of nothing but eucalyptus leaves, about a pound and a half per day. In fact, the koala would be extinct without the eucalyptus. Sounds

like a pretty boring feed, but consider that there are about 600 kinds of eucalyptus trees and to the koala, each one tastes different. If you think your teenager is lazy, consider that the koala sleeps an average of 22 hours per day! There have been koalas at the famous San Diego Zoo since 1925 when the children of Sydney, Australia gifted the zoo with Snugglepot and Cuddlepie.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD:THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL

The west end of Washington D.C.’s National Mall is home to the majestic Lincoln Memorial, a mon-ument dedicated to America’s 16th president. Here are the facts and figures about this symbol of freedom honoring the “Great Emancipator.”

• Although the Lincoln Memorial Association was established two years after Lincoln’s death, the monument site wasn’t selected until 1901. In 1911, President Taft signed a bill allotting $2 mil-lion for the construction, which began in 1914.

• The style of the building, designed by Henry Bacon, is that of an ancient Greek temple, 100 feet high, surrounded by an open portico, con-structed from Colorado marble. Thirty-six fluted columns border the open court, symbolic of the 36 states in the Union at the time of Lincoln’s assassination in April of 1865, just six days after the end of the Civil War. In the area above the columns are 48 stone garlands and the names of the 48 states in the Union when the Memo-rial was com-pleted and dedicated in 1922.

• To the north and south of the central hall are chambers whose walls are inscribed with the words of Lincoln’s most famous speech-es, his second inaugural address and the Gettys-burg Address.

• Above these inscriptions are 60 x 12-foot murals, painted with special mixtures of paint, kerosene, and wax, formulated to protect the scenes from the elements. The paintings feature prin-ciples followed by Lincoln throughout his life, including freedom, liberty, justice, unity, frater-nity, charity, and the law.

• In the central hall sits Lincoln, immortalized in marble, 19 feet tall and weighing 175 tons. The original plans called for a 10-ft-tall Lincoln, but it was enlarged so that the statue would not be dwarfed by the huge chamber. It took four years to complete the sculpture out of Georgia white marble. Six Italian men, the Piccirilli Brothers, carved the statue in the South Bronx under the supervision of the sculptor Daniel French, and it was shipped to Washington in 28 separate pieces. (The Piccirillis were also responsible for creat-ing the two enormous sculpted lions in front of the New York City Public Library.) If the giant Lincoln were able to stand up, he would be 28 feet tall. Above Lincoln’s likeness is an inscribed epitaph, “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memo-ry of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”

KFKA’s annual Greeley Central/Greeley West football broadcast featured a domi-nating performance by senior running back David Eddy of the Spartans. From opening kickoff in this one, Eddy moved the chains time and time again and proved to be too much for the Wildcats defense.

The Spartans scored every time they had the football in the first half making the score 17-0 at the end of two quarters. Because of the successful rushing attack led by this week’s Loveland Ford player of the week, Greeley West controlled the clock and notched their second win of the season with a final score of 24-6. Con-gratulations to this week’s Loveland Ford Player of the week; David Eddy!

Recently, the Psychic Hotline and Psy-chic Friends Network have launched

hotlines for frogs. Here is the story of one frog and his discussing with his psychic.

A frog telephones the Psychic Hotline and is told, “You are going to meet a beautiful young girl who will want to know everything about you.”

The frog says, “This is great! Will I meet her at a party, or what?”

“No,” says the psychic. “Next semester in her biology class.”

A man went to visit a friend and was amazed to find him playing chess

with his dog. He watched the game in astonishment for a while. “I can hardly believe my eyes!” he exclaimed. “That’s the smartest dog I’ve ever seen.”

“Nah, he’s not so smart,” the friend re-plied. “I’ve beaten him three games out of five.”

There was once a man from the city who was visiting a small farm, and

during this visit he saw a farmer feeding pigs in a most extraordinary manner. The farmer would lift a pig up to a nearby ap-ple tree, and the pig would eat the apples

off the tree directly. The farmer would move the pig from one apple to another until the pig was satisfied, then he would start again with another pig.

The city man watched this activity for some time with great astonishment. Finally, he could not resist saying to the farmer, “This is the most inefficient method of feeding pigs that I can imag-ine. Just think of the time that would be saved if you simply shook the apples off the tree and let the pigs eat them from the ground!”

The farmer looked puzzled and replied, “What’s time to a pig?”

Q: Why do seagulls live near the sea?

A: Because if they lived near the bay, they would be called bagels.

• In this season of bitter partisan rivalries, it would be well to remember the following sage observation: “Do not trust to the cheering, for those persons would cheer just as much if you and I were going to be hanged.” The man who first made that observation was Lord Protec-tor of England Oliver Cromwell, considered by some to be a hero of liberty, by others to be a regicidal dictator. He died in 1658, prob-ably from septicemia. He was so reviled that, three years later, he body was exhumed so that he could be posthumously executed, his body thrown into a pit and his head displayed on a pole outside Westminster Hall.

• Those who study such things say that if all the gold in the world were combined in one lump, it would result in a cube that measures 20 yards on each side.

• If you’re planning a trip to Lima, Peru, you might want to add Puente de Piedra to your sightseeing list. Though the Spanish name means “Bridge of Stone,” the span is popularly known as the Bridge of Eggs. Legend has it that in 1608, the builders the used the whites of 10,000 seabird eggs in the mortar that holds the stones together.

• Pumpkins are native to the Americas, not Eu-rope. This is why the original jack-o’-lantern was a turnip.

• What do the words “obscene,” “tranquil,” “me-diate,” “catastrophe,” “dire,” “critical,” “vast” and “apostrophe” have in common? All of them ap-peared in print for the first time in the works of William Shakespeare.

• If you’re contemplating a move to Corpus Christi, Texas, be sure to keep in mind that in that town, it’s illegal to raise alligators in your home.

“I’m divorcing my second wife,” a friend told me recently. Before I could even respond, he said sorrowfully, “You know what Dr. Ross? I should never have divorced my first one.”

In the area of bad decisions, my friend is not alone. Several years ago my wife and I were living in a city we didn’t like, doing a job we despised, in the company of people we didn’t enjoy. Many times during the three long years we were there my wife would whimper, “How did we ever end up here?”

When she threatened to go to the local truck stop and hitch a ride with any trucker going either east or west, I realized it was time to figure out how to get out of town. So we started making deci-sions that eventually got us back to sanity, back to God’s country, back to Colorado. Now she tells me she will live with me any-where in the world as long as it’s in Colorado.

You make a few good deci-sions and good things happen. Make some bad ones and who knows what sorry town or situa-tion you’ll end up in?

Life, it appears, is little more than a series of decisions. And it all started in the Garden of Eden when Eve asked Adam, “Hey big boy, you wanna bite of this?” The rest is history. Do you see the long-term impact one bad decision can make?

Here is a reality check for you: You are who you are today because of the decisions you made in the past; and who you will be tomorrow will be deter-mined by the decisions you make today.

So how good are you at making right decisions? If you are normal you have made your quota of both good and bad decisions. Some decisions you

“Kick in the Pants” is a series of columns that will appear over the next six months. A compilation of the series will be made available toward the end of the series. thought were good when you made them, and some you knew were wrong and you made them anyway, and a few that seemed wrong turned out right. Who’s to know?

Don’t you wish that warning lights would flash when you are about to make a bad choice or that trumpets would sound when you’re about to decide right? Unfortunately life isn’t like that. You have to make decisions day-by-day, and even moment-by-moment and hope that ultimately the good ones outnumber the bad.

Here are two observations concerning decision making that I think are worthy of your considera-tion:

First of all, good decisions are the result of thoughtful deliberation spiced with the advice of wise counselors. Give emotion, reason, wise counsel and sufficient time equal op-portunity to guide you in your decision making process.

Second, good decisions give you the confidence to make more good decisions. If you’re on a downward spiral because of bad decisions, start

by making a few good small decisions and increase your confidence until you are ready to take on the looming, life-changing choices that will elevate you two a whole new level of living.

It’s one of the most import skills you’ll ever learn because your destiny is determined one small decision at a time.

You’re “Kick in the pants” for this week is this: Go a day and make good decisions, then a week, then a month. In the process you develop valuable decision making skills and you will blossom!

• On Nov. 7, 1776, Congress chooses Richard Bache to succeed his father-in-law, Benjamin Franklin, as postmaster general. Franklin in-vested nearly 40 years in the establishment of a reliable system of delivering mail. • On Nov. 5, 1895, Rochester, N.Y., patent at-torney George Selden wins U.S. Patent No. 549,160 for an “improved road engine” pow-ered by a “liquid-hydrocarbon engine of the compression type.” With that, as far as the government was concerned, George Selden had invented the car -- though he had never

built a single one.• On Nov. 10, 1928, the first installment of “All

Quiet on the Western Front,” Erich Maria Remarque’s acclaimed novel of World War I, is first published in serial form. Remarque’s realistic depiction of trench warfare from the perspective of young soldiers was eventually translated into more than 20 languages.

• On Nov. 11, 1942, Congress approves lowering the draft age to 18 and raising the upper limit to age 37, increasing the number of draftees. During the first draft in 1940, 50 percent were rejected for health reasons and 20 percent of those who registered were illiterate.

• On Nov. 8, 1951, Yankees catcher Yogi Berra is voted the American League’s most valuable player for the first time in his career. He went on to be the league MVP twice more, in 1954 and 1955.

• On Nov. 9, 1965, the biggest power failure in U.S. history occurs as all of New York state, and parts of seven neighboring states and

eastern Canada are plunged into darkness. The blackout during the evening rush hour trapped 800,000 people in New York’s subways and stranded thousands more in office buildings and elevators.

• On Nov. 6, 1977, the earthen Toccoa Falls Dam in northeastern Georgia gives way, and 39 people die in the resulting flood. A volun-teer fireman had inspected the dam and found everything in order just hours before it sud-denly failed, sending water approaching speeds of 120 mph thundering down the canyon and creek.
