Greeley County Republican 75¢ Single Copy P.O. Box 610 • Tribune, Kansas 67879 • 620-376-4264 —10 Pages— Wednesday, September 8, 2021 Vol. 155. No. 36 Our vision is a vibrant, friendly, innovative, unified community with your family, health and happiness in mind. Jan & Dan Unified Greeley County supervisors Kirby Kleymann, Justin Phillips, Monty Moritz, Corbin Myers, and Scott Steele met Thursday, September 2, at 12:00 p.m. in a special meeting at the courthouse that was also streamed online. Also present were county health nurse Lisa Moritz, public works administrator Gina Bond, and county clerk Jerri Young. Kleymann called the meeting to order. The agenda was approved; the only item of business would be a discussion of the Greeley County Health Department. Lisa Moritz distributed a proposed architectural floor plan for remodeling of the space purchased by the county when the school requested that the health department move from its current location on the school campus. Moritz explained some of the suggestions. She would like to have a foot care area so senior citizens could come to the health department for foot care. The two required restrooms must be moved and brought up to code, with an 8-foot turn radius. There is a conference room for group meetings and a waiting room, and a covered drive-through area. The architect had included pricing, which Moritz also distributed. The architect fee was $5,000. Supervisors thought the overall price for the entire project was very high. Lisa described some possible funding grants. Supervisors had hoped the cost would be about half of what was proposed. Moritz said a detailed budget is needed to apply for grants. They also noted that timing is an issue, since the department must move in three months. It was noted that it would be very difficult to find a contractor on such short notice. Lisa asked where the department would go in the mean time. Possibilities were discussed. Supervisors asked if the proposed budget included any furniture, equipment, electronics, tables, chairs, etc. Supervisors asked Lisa to scale back the plan some, and have the architects look at what is already there and use as much of that as possible. They also asked for a list of grants Lisa has already been awarded, so they can see what may already be accounted for. After much further discussion, supervisors requested that Lisa look for other temporary locations, and also begin to pack up items that belong to the county in preparation for moving. They also want to meet face-to-face with the architects to let them know what the supervisors want and trim down the proposal because it is too expensive as it is. Supervisors hope that by their next meeting they will have a temporary location for the health department to move into. Official minutes of supervisors’ meetings are available at the county clerk’s office. Supervisors hold special meeting Make plans to attend a fun, Halloween-themed entertaining evening featuring 176 Keys’ Fun Pianos, an Italian dinner, and a silent and live auction on Saturday, October 23, 2021. J — There are two events this weekend in honor of our emergency service workers. One is a 20 Year Memorial for 9/11/2001 on Saturday around noon. The second is an event Sunday evening honoring all our local emergency service workers, medical personnel, and veterans. Thanks to them all for the service and time they give to the community for the good of our residents. There are many sacrifices and we appreciate that. These workers are an incredibly important part of our community and make it a livable place for us all. **** J – We did NOT print community birthday calendars this year. Several people have asked. We used to print them and sold 350- 400 a year. Last year we maybe sold 30-40. We just couldn’t reconcile the large amount of labor involved with the few people who still would like to have them. And we are getting older, for sure. Keeping track of birthdays has become a facebook/social media thing for most people. We were getting only a very few new additions to the calendar and they weren’t of the younger generations who have moved into town in recent years. We didn’t want to make that decision, and we put it off for several years, but we finally had to. Thanks for all those who have supported the project since 1998, when our son Aaron put them together. **** J – I noticed that we will have to begin dialing the area code as well as the phone number as of October 24 th . There are 13 states, including Kansas and Colorado, that will have to start doing this. When we moved here, it was only necessary to dial the last 4 numbers of anyone’s phone number!! I’m sure it will take me, and probably a few others, a while to get used to this dialing. Hopefully our smart phones will take care of it! **** D Alan Schlegel announced his retirement as agronomist at the Southwest Research Extension Center. He and Martha came in 1984 and have been a stable part of the community for decades. They will be missed. The Extension has been part of the community since 1911 and has made valuable contributions to agriculture in the community and in Western Kansas. It should continue. It’s interesting that there were a number of key people who came in the mid and late 80s to the community. They are now retiring. It’s a loss but it does provide an opportunity for a new generation to take their place. **** D — We have started to print some pages in color. The problem is that our printer has only certain pages that can be in color and it doesn’t always match up with our historical placement of pages. I’m a creature of habit and page 4 has always been the editorial page and page 2 is the church page. And so it goes. But this week I have to change to accommodate the colored pictures. It messed with my head. I guess I can change my head, but it isn’t always as easy as it sounds. The computers at work and now in the cars, the phone and other electronic gadgets all seem to want me to change my mind. OK, OK, I’ll try, but isn’t there room for a little compromise? Why not program computers to serve people?
