The ENLIGHTENER
Pastor’s Message:
As I write this, in the middle of May, we still don’t know when we will be able to get together
physically for worship. Our guidance so far from our Bishop is that we cannot open our churches before
June. We still don’t know when the Governor and health authorities will open our region for church
attendance. It appears that churches will be in Phase 4, but when that will occur is not known. When the
church does reopen, we will probably still be keeping our distance from one another. We may not be able
to sing together for some time. So much is unknown.
Our Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, the body that oversees the clergy of the conference,
has proposed that each clergy person be granted a Continuing Education unit in recognition of the learning
that we have had to do to navigate this change in the way we do ministry. We have had to keep track of
legislation, advice, and requirements. We have had to figure out how to use technology in ways that are
new to many of us. We have had to rethink what ministry looks like when you can’t hold hands, or even
shake hands, when you can’t visit people in hospitals or nursing homes, when you can’t gather more than
ten people for a funeral.
If I could grant Continuing Education units to our congregation, I would do that. You have had to
step up in new ways. You have cared for one another with calls and cards. You have learned how to use
technology in ways that you have never done before. You have helped out those who are struggling, even
when you have been struggling yourselves. And you have supported our church in such a way that we have
great hope of coming through this crisis intact and whole, and ready to continue in ministry.
I hope that you will keep me in your prayers, and you can be assured that I pray for you, and will
continue to do so. Whatever else has changed, God is still with us, and is still more ready to hear us than we
are to pray.
In Christ’s love,
Pastor Matt Stengel

Moving Forward Toward Post-COVID Worship
We have missed you! Although we have been using Zoom and Facebook Live, it is not the same as
actually seeing everyone in person. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. As our state is getting ready
to slowly move toward releasing restrictions, we have begun to look forward to what this means for us.
Let us first say, that during this crisis, we did not just push the pause button and intend on just
picking up where we left off. We have to actually reset how coming together as a community in the post-
COVID world is going to look like. Every aspect of our church is being reviewed so that we can create a safe
and healthy environment for all who visit our building. Our intentions are to use recommendations from the
state, church, and community.
This is where you come in. If you could please take a moment to fill out the survey below, this will
help us prioritize your concerns. As we get closer to our return to in person worship, we will have a special
section set up on our website outlining our post-COVID protocols. You will also see a special mailing
describing all the changes occurring to make our environment more safe.
Thank you for your help with this. We look forward to seeing you soon. In the meantime, we will
continue to have Sunday morning coffee hour on Zoom and Sunday morning message on Facebook Live.
You can mail the completed survey to the church, drop it off at the church office (Monday-Thursday,
9AM-12PM), or email your responses to [email protected], subject: WORSHIP SURVEY.

GREECE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN:
Dear Members, As of the June newsletter deadline, it is still too early to know whether or not we will be able to hold our Executive Committee Meeting or our Circle Meetings. We will contact everyone by email or phone once a decision has been made. Please stay home and stay healthy! This too shall pass!
Message from Outreach: This just in from Sandy Erickson at the GEFS:
“The final weight for food donated on May 7th was a little over 15,000 lbs. We are working at sorting it, but along with deliveries and shop-pers three days/week, it takes a lot of time. It's wonderful to have so much to choose from when packing rather than having to make substitutions. People were extremely generous.”
For comparison, she said a large order from Foodlink would be around 1,000 lbs!
There were also many $$$ donations—over $4,000!!
A HUGE thank you to everyone who was able to contribute!!!
. . . AND, don’t forget: Undie Sunday is just around the corner on May 31. New, packaged undies--as well as pants & socks--can be left in the big green basket in the commons (to be delivered when schools finally reopen).
Joys and Concerns
During this time of social distancing we would like to continue the effort to keep our church congregation connected and updated on your Joys & Concerns. Since we cannot get these out in our weekly bulletin we would like to offer this list through an email that we will send out weekly on Thursdays. If you would like to share your prayer request with us for this list please send by Wednesday at noon to the Church Office at [email protected] (call 585-225-1880) or Pastor Matt at [email protected].
If you would like the Pastor to pray but do not want your request shared on the public list please indicate that clearly on your request.
We look forward to hearing from you,

Thoughts from Lay Leader Lisa Kostyshak..
Patience, Flexibility, and Change
I was reminded recently of these three words that are always presented
as people prepare for mission travel with Ted and Mary Anderson.
First-timers don’t quite understand what that means, but veteran
mission travelers just knowingly nod. It is very near 100% guaranteed
that something associated with the trip will change. You will likely need
to exercise patience with the people you have never met, but who you
are traveling with and spending nearly all your time with for 10-20 days.
There will likely be many situations that try your patience, when your
expectations are not met. The trip that was planned, and agenda that
was published, is likely to change. You’ll need to be flexible when you
don’t have the right clothes, equipment for a job, or there is no food you
like at a meal.
In our current “new normal”, pandemic burdened world, those three
words apply today, don’t they? We need to exercise patience, be
flexible, and expect change in places completely unexpected. It seems
everything has changed, or at least many things that used to ground you
in a routine and predictable life. Patience may have been easy at the
start when we all stayed home, but how is it now? How difficult is it to
remain patient with staying home, or ongoing patience with your little
ones, spouse, roommate? Flexibility to do things differently as we work
our way through the need to wear masks, adjust how we connect with
other people, how we shop, how we worship. So many things to deal
with. Through all of this, one thing remains constant – God. So, amid
juggling flexibility, patience, and change, (and perhaps a bit of bore-
dom?) where are you finding God and fitting him into your daily life?
Some ideas…. daily devotions, reaching out to someone else, praying
over the phone with others, writing letters.
For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says
to you,
Do not fear; I will help you.
Isaiah 41:13 (NIV)
I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13 (ESV)
New Location for HEART TO HEART and
"WE CARE" CARD MINISTRY List
The list has been moved to the table where the cards are located in the Commons area across from the stairs leading to Fellowship Hall. The list containing addresses is a combination of both our Heart to Heart members and those recently undergoing health challenges. New names for either listing should be given to Gale Huber (247-3464).
Remember, the church is currently open every morning from 8:00 until noon if you wish to stop in and pick up a card or donate food. Thank you.
Salem Nutritional Center
Salem is still operating, doing meals for pickup only, and they are operating with a reduced staff (basically by invitation only).
No "outside" volunteers are being used. We will keep you updated when we resume our schedule.

Your donations of food help to feed our neighbors in Greece and Charlotte. Thank you
UPDATE: COVID-19 and Our Church Finances:
The social distancing mandate has led to the cancellation of our Sunday services and the March and May fund raisers. (No fund raiser was planned for April.) There is a lot of rethinking to be done, but we are planning to resume the Chicken BBQ events in June. The book sale has been moved to July.
Because you, our members, have continued to send in your contributions, tithes and offerings we have come through to mid-May in acceptable financial shape. Thanks be to you and to God!
Government support via the CARES act has also been a help. It has allowed the church to continue to pay our staff and our day care tenant to remain open and paying toward our expenses.
Your contributions, tithes and offerings are still not just welcome, but vital. You may drop them off at the church, mail them, or use our online giving option (see the website greeceumc.org).

June Selection:
Where’d You Go Bernadette By Marie Semple
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect; and to 15-year-old Bee, she is her best friend and, simply, Mom. Then Bernadette vanishes. It all began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle -- and people in general -- has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic. To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, and secret correspondence -- creating a compulsively readable and surprisingly touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world

Congregational Share Pages This page is devoted for the purpose of sharing ideas, recipes, book reviews, notes of
encouragement, etc. It’s an opportunity to reach out to all who read our newsletters,

A Time of “Being” with God:
A couple of years ago, I facilitated two classes called the Red Letter Challenge by Zach Zehnder. The study was to live more like Jesus by challenging us to reach five targets taught to followers by Jesus. 1. Being 2. Forgiving 3. Serving 4. Giving 5. Going I’ve chosen this time of sheltering at home to “Be” with God. The more you strengthen your relationship with God, the easier forgiving, serving, giving, and going will be. To “be” with God looks different for everyone. For me, being with God consisted of prayer, Bible reading, daily devotions, on-line gatherings, and going through some old small group study books. As we continue to shelter, use this time to “be” with our Lord. Debbie Babbage
I have decided to share devotions with you. Maybe some of you could be creative and do this too. I came across a Women of Faith Devotional while trying to decide what to share. The book is called Joy Breaks. I found it on my shelf and the inscription in the front of the book says I gave it to Jerry’s Mother in 1999. This book has taken me down memory lane. I know it will touch many of your hearts. Some have never experienced Women of Faith. I miss that nourishing ministry.
Here is a shortened version of Barbara Johnson’s Twenty Five Ways To Make Your Day.
From John 15:11: “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.”
Give yourself a gift today: be present with yourself. God is. Enjoy your own personality. God does. You are going to make it through whatever is on your plate. You are not only a survivor; you are a winner. Make your day.
I will list 5 fun, sometimes foolish, always productive ways to put a smile on your face-----
1. Do the first drudgerous job on your list with a smile. Reward yourself with listening to a great piece of music.
2. Know this: The present is what slips by us while we’re pondering the past and worrying about the future. Live in the now.
3. Start a journal if you don’t already have one. Write down 5 things you are thankful for today.
4. Relish small pleasures.
5. Don’t allow a problem to be solved to be come more important than a person loved.
For those of you not familiar with Barbara Johnson, she expe-rienced the death of 2 adult sons and the third of her 4 sons was gay. She developed a ministry called The Spatula Minis-try—Pealing people off the ceiling during times of crisis. I loved her sense of humor and of course her splashes of joy. They are flat marbles she gave away for reminders of God’s love for us.
Enjoy your memories, and hopefully those of you new to Barbara Johnson can feel her love of God.
