The Curved Teen Art Show, created by 15 year-old artist Trinity Brown (pictured work, left), will be held on Saturday, August 25 at the Carr Center, in Downtown Detroit. The show will showcase young artists in an array of media — from clay to fashion designs to caricatures. Curved has recruited young artists

from a variety of places, from local high schools to Mint Artists Guild and other shows. Said Brown, who attends Universi-

ty High School Academy in Lathrup Village, “The most important aspect of becoming an experienced artist is learning how to survive an art fair.” The Curved show runs from 11

a.m. to 5 p.m. and features artists 25 and under, with some as young as 13. A portion of the profits will

be donated to the National Scoliosis Foundation, in honor of the condition that launched Brown’s creative jour-ney. For more info see Instagram.com/curvedteenartshow. The Carr Center is located at 1505 Woodward Ave. in Downtown Detroit.

Woodrow Wilson will be closed to traffic for two city blocks

from Buena Vista to Tyler in front of the Theatre. Parking is available in the Muslim Center parking lot, on Woodrow Wilson and side streets. Dream of Detroit is a community organization focused on hous-

ing and economic development. They acquire homes that are for sale and work with local businesses and neighbors on beautifica-tion and stabilization projects. Their objective is to bring fami-lies back into homes and businesses back into the neighborhood. For more information and a complete schedule of festival events

SPORTING LIFE

Gold Cup, Golden Glove By George B. Eichorn

What a great sports weekend in Detroit: the an-nual Spirit of Detroit Hydrofest featuring the APBA Gold Cup Race along the Detroit River and the No. 3 Alan Trammell Jersey Retirement ceremony at Comerica Park. It’s a Detroit tradition more than 100 years run-

ning as the oldest trophy in motorsports is up for grabs this weekend for the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers Hydrofest and Gold Cup. The race is part of three days of fun riverside as

Free Day is this Friday, August 24 and competition heats are contested Saturday, August 25 and on Sunday. There is no live TV for the event. All the top H1 Unlimited hydroplane teams and

drivers are in town for the Super Bowl of power-boat racing – the prestigious Gold Cup.One boat to watch for is the Big Red Terminator.

Veteran Jimmy King will drive The Roostertail-sponsored U-3 on his home course. Big Red pre-

viously competed in the Tri Cities race. The river-front entertainment facility is celebrating its 60th anniversary.Other drivers to watch in Detroit: points leader

Andrew Tate, Michael Kelly, Jimmy Shane and Cal Phipps. Seating is still available for this weekend. Call (313) 329-8047 or see detroitboatraces.com.Tigers Manager Ron Gardenhire and the current

2018 club will watch on Sunday, August 26 start-ing at 12:15 p.m. to honor Hall of Fame Shortstop Alan Trammell, (see his Cooperstown plaque, left). His family, members of the 1984 World Cham-

pion Tigers, and club officials will join Tram at the center of the diamond.Just like Jack Morris’ No. 47 retirement on August

12, the Tigers are expected to pull out all the stops in recognizing one-half of their famous double-play combination. Alan’s friend and second base-man Lou Whitaker, who wore No. 1 in Detroit, is expected to be on hand.Trammell was MVP of the ’84 World Series and

played his entire career in a Tigers uniform. He is employed by the club today as a special assistant to General Manager Al Avila. Trammell and Mor-ris were inducted in July into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Tram’s name and number will be painted on the

outfield wall and fans will get their first view of that on Sunday.More than 30,000 were on hand for Morris’ cere-

mony two weeks ago and an even bigger crowd is expected for Trammell who belted two home runs in Game 4 of the World Series enroute to Detroit’s five-game Series win over the San Diego Padres.Tram played here from 1977-1996 and was a

6-time All-Star and 4-time Gold Glove winner. He batted .285 lifetime with 2365 hits, 185 HR and 1003 RBI. He was just 186 -300 as a Tigers man-ager from 2003-2005. He also was the Tigers hit-ting coach in 1999.

Mark Wahlberg with a gun! Haven't seen that be-fore...In Mile 22, yet another col-

laboration between direc-tor Peter Berg and Wahl-berg (pictured, below), we meet Overwatch, a clan-destine do-or-die black ops team, with no official government status. In fact, most of their un-

sanctioned missions are understood to be probable suicide.Wahlberg, plays James Sil-

va, the team leader of this deadly ground force. A ge-nius, certified since child-hood to be psychologically prone towards violence, he has the perfect mindset to lead Overwatch's cur-rent mission — escorting an asylum-seeking spy (martial arts superstar Iko Uwais) who holds a secret code to the whereabouts of nuclear material. The spy, formerly a police

officer, will only reveal the location of the nukes if the Overwatch team can get him on a plane to the Unit-

ed States. And, getting him out of

his South Asian country will be difficult, as his na-tion's intelligence agencies have no regard for civil-ian casualties and will do whatever it takes to dis-patch him before he talks. The Overwatch team is

made up of self-destruc-tive daredevil mercenar-ies, including the divorced mom, Alice (the Walking Dead's Lauren Cohan, pic-tured), the burly tomboy, Sam (MMA and wrestling star Ronda Rousey), and several others who be-come fast collateral dam-age. The team is run on the

ground by an off-site com-munications war-room headed by the stoic and tight-lipped master of logistics called Mother (John Malkovich — in an homage to the 1970's Brit-ish TV show, The Avengers, as well.) So, there's the story:

Overwatch against every-body. Lots of gunplay, lots

CINEMA CULTURE

A Review by Paul Arlon

Mile 22 - The Road Most Taken of car chases, lots of explo-sions, and Mark Wahlberg reverting back to his na-tive Queens, NY accent, while spouting 'high-brow' dialogue. (He's a genius, you know.)This movie, as are many

action and adventure flicks lately, is a produc-tion backed by Chinese money (just like Mission Impossible: Fallout, by the way). And, that means what? Just this — most of these recent Chinese fi-nanced films seem to be heavy on the action and light on the speaking parts and plot lines. In Mile 22, gratuitous uses

of the eff-word are slapped into just about every char-acter's dialogue.

Written by Lea Carpenter and Graham Roland, this is not erudite literature. It's very not.I'll grant that there are

a couple of decent plot twists, but otherwise, I would suggest you've seen much of this movie before. As a matter of fact, there is indeed a sequel in the works. Quite honestly, I could of told you that as

soon as the end credits be-gan to roll. The most amusing pro-

motional language for this movie is its slogan: Option 1 is Diplomacy.Option 2 is the Military. When those fail, we're Op-

tion 3.Well, my fellow film fans,

there is also an Option 4: Wait until Mile 22 shows

up on cable.
