Protests broke out in many areas where curfew was eased. In morning, the city centre witnessed consider- able movement of private vehicles leading to a brief traffic jam at Jahangir Chowk, Budshah Kadal, Batamaloo and TRC. However, the movement of vehicles petered out after clashes erupted at several places including Batamaloo, Rainawari, Habba Kadal and Chota Bazar. Police used teargas shelling to disperse the protesters, followed by re-imposition of the restric- tions. On Sunday evening, the government had decided to ease curfew in Srinagar on Monday, except in the areas falling within jurisdiction of MR Gunj and Nowhatta police stations. First time in the past fifty days, some pharmacies were open at Lal Chowk. Some vendors also sold veggies and fruits at Lal Chowk, Sonwar and Dalgate. “I am selling vegetables which are a daily need in every household. It is not that we don’t follow shut- down call given by joint resistance camp, but we are here to help people,” said Ali Muhammad, a street vendor at Dalgate. Schools, public and pri- vate offices, petrol pumps remained closed due to Hurriyat shutdown. Public transport also remained off the roads. “Authorities have lifted curfew but we will continue to observe shutdown call. Our shutdown is a clear mes- sage to government that we follow Hurriyat calendar and are struggling for the cause,” said Adil Ahmad, a local at Batamaloo. Traders said that they are determined and want a resolution of Kashmir issue once and for all and will follow Hurriyat calendar. “We are least bothered about our business losses. The ongoing movement must reach its logical conclusion. We are ready to continue shutdown even for an indefi- nite period. We want resolu- tion of Kashmir issue, that is what we want,” said Muham- mad Yaseen Khan, Chairman Kashmir Economic Alliance. “We will open and close our business establishments as per the calendar”. Khan continued that the Government of India must initiate dialogue with Kashmiri leadership. “When I say Kashmir lead- ership, I mean Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. The main- stream politicians are only for Sadak, Bijli and Paani (roads, electricity and water),” he said adding that as per joint resistance leadership calendar, trad- ers will run their business during relaxation period. “Government tried to counter relaxation period by imposing night curfew. However, it had to face embarrassment as traders and common people showed determination to follow the call of leadership,” Khan said. Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Farooq Ahmad Lone told Greater Kashmir that lifting of curfew and restrictions was a “right decision.” “The day passed off peacefully. There were some minor stone pelting incidents. There will be no restrictions on Tues- day in the city except the areas falling within MR Gunj and Nowhatta police stations,” Deputy Commis- sioner said. Rangreth residents throng this injured youth's residence ZEHRU NISSA Srinagar, Aug 29: Broken feet with other related injuries, this youth hailing from Rangreth on city outskirts remains unapolo- getic about the incident which led to his injury. For Rangreth residents, Mushtaq Ahmad is hero as they thronged his residence to know about his condition aſter remaining in Bone and Joint Hospital at Barzulla. “I want to unfurl our own flag,” says Mushtaq, who is in his thirties with both his feet broken and remains unapolo- getic about the incident that led to his injury. “The forces in the area had hoisted tricolor on a mobile tower on August 12. I removed it and replaced it with green flag with crescent,” Mushtaq , a resident of Ran- greth, says. “The switching of flags continued for five nights. Then on the fifth night, per- haps tired of climbing about 100 feet on the mobile tower, the forces hoisted the flag on a water tank nearby and closed all entry to it, even broke the stairs” . “Within half an hour, I was up on the top of the water tank and took tricolor down,” he says adding that security forces had laid a siege around the water tank and cordoned it off as soon as they saw the flag being removed. Mushtaq jumped the stairs in his attempt to escape. When he landed, he could only crawl. In no time, his friends hauled him away, and to the hospital. “This is not about bravery but about our sentiments and aspirations,” he says with a smile. Waiting for a surgery in his legs, Mushtaq says, he would not have minded if all his bones had been broken in pursuit of what he calls ‘truth’. “Even the United Nations knows that Kashmir is not part of India. How can we ignore this fact,” he says. “Till I live, I will not let Indian flag fly in my area. Because this is Kashmir,” his voice deepens. Mushtaq supports his family that includes a little daughter by driving a load car- rier. He wishes for a ‘Kashmir Flag’ that he could hoist. “A flag of independent Kashmir,” he says almost dreamily. “Until then, I will keep flying the green flag.” He says he has been part of resistance ‘right from 1990s’. “I have resist- ed in all ways I can. I will do that till the end,” he says. Doctors at B&J Hospital said Mushtaq had Calcaneal Fracture (broken heels), and the injuries would take months to heal. “He would need a long rest,” a doctor who treated him said.
