ZimbabweZimbabwe, officially the Republic of Zimbabwe, is a landlocked country located in southern Afr ca between the Zambezi and Limpopo rivers. It is bordered by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the southwest, Zambia to the northwest and Mozambique to the east. The capital is Harare. Zimbabwe achieved de jure sovereignty from the United Kingdom in April 1980, following 14 years as an un recognised state under the conservative white minority government of Rhodesia, which unilaterally declared independence in 1965.

Tourism of ZimbabweZimbabwe boasts several major tourist attractions. Victoria Falls on the Zambezi, which are shared with Zambia, are located in the north west of Zimbabwe. Before the economic changes, much of the tourism for these locations came to the Zimbabwe side but now Zambia is the main beneficiary. The Victoria Falls National Park is also in this area and is one of the eight main national parks in Zimbabwe, argest of which is Hwange National Park. The Eastern Highlands are a series of mountainous areas near the border with Mozambique. The highest peak in Zimbabwe, Mount Nyangani at 2,593 m (8,507 ft) is located here as well as the Bvumba Mountains and the Nyanga National Park. World's View is in these mountains and it is from here that places as far away as 60–70 km (37–43 mi) are visible and, on clear days, the town of Rusape can be seen.Zimbabwe is unusual in Africa in that there are a number of ancient ruined cities built in a unique dry stone style. The most famous of these are the Great Zimbabwe ruins in Masvingo Other ruins include Khami Ruins, Zimbabwe, Dhlo-Dhlo and Naletale although none of these is as famous as Great Zimbabwe.

Great Zimbabwe National MonumentGreat Zimbabwe is a ruined city in the southeastern hills of Zimbabwe

near Lake Mutirikwe and the town of Masvingo. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the country's Late Iron Age. Construction on the monument by ancestors of the Shona people began in the 11th century and continued until the 14th century, spanning an area of 722 hectares (1,780 acres) which, at its peak, could have housed up to 18,000 people. It is recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Great Zimbabwe served as a royal palace for the Zimbabwean monarch and wouldhave been used as the seat of political power. One of its most prominent features were the walls, some of which were over five metres high and which were constructed without mortar. Eventually the city was abandoned and fell into ruin.

Khami ruinsIt is located 15 km west of Bulawayo. The

architecture of the site and the archaeological artifacts provide evidence

for an exceptional understanding of a strong early civilization. They also offer information on the property’s complex socio-economic, religious and spiritual significance for the local communities

and for the chronological developments of Zimbabwe civilization initiated in

mapungubwe (South Africa) extending to Great Zimbabwe and through the

emergence of a complex state system.
