partnership and the first germination of a bold dream. Since

The Smith Center for the Performing Arts has both superb

acoustics and world caliber artists, Vegas PBS proposed a

cooperative effort to explore production and funding of an

arts mini-series for PBS originating from The Smith Center.

Our vision is to create a Las Vegas series modeled after New

Kennedy Center Presents. Officials at The Smith

become enthusiastic partners. As you enjoy this program,

he holiday season often brings thoughts of home and family. Here at

Vegas PBS, home and family are especially important as they relate to

providing educational programs and services.

The critical role the family plays in helping ensure the educational

success of children is well known. Research also indicates how learning

needs to take place beyond the confines of the school day and into the home. Learning is

an activity that never stops!

Involving the family in the educa-

tional process and providing educa-

tional resources wherever the family

gathers has been a mainstay of Vegas

PBS for decades. Generations can

recall learning their colors and litera-

cy skills from Sesame Street, Arthur

and many other PBS programs.

Long before bullying or character

education were widespread topics of

discussion, Mr. Rogers showed mil-

lions of viewers how everyone was spe-

cial and the importance of being a good neighbor! Time has shown how ahead of his time

Mr. Rogers’ programs and messages have been. The legacy of Mr. Rogers is now being car-

ried on with broadcasts of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.

In our technology driven world, Vegas PBS provides a wealth of content in the many

ways we expect for all of our communications. In addition to broadcast programs watched

via television, millions now connect from tablets and smart phones and devices like Roku

and X-box. Specialized “apps” or learning applications are also now viewed by millions and

are as natural to users as viewing Sesame Street at home on the couch was to earlier gen-

erations. In 2013, the PBSKids.org website averaged 11.5 million unique visitors per month,

and more than 7 million downloads of PBS educational mobile apps have already occurred.

Vegas PBS is online and in the places where families gather such as literacy festivals,

community centers, schools, health fairs, Boys and Girls Clubs, and United Way Centers.

Vegas PBS is making sure that children and families receive top quality, effective instruc-

tional content they trust. We are glad to bring it home and wish all, Happy Holidays!

omposer, conductor, genius, mensch: Marvin Hamlisch(June 2, 1944 – Aug. 6, 2012) earned a Pulitzer Prize, four Emmys, four Grammys, three Golden Globes, threeOscars and a Tony Award before his untimely death, mak-

ing him one of only two PEGOT winners ever. Hit after hit – “TheWay We Were,” “Nobody Does It Better” and scores for The Sting,Sophie’s Choice and the Broadway juggernaut A Chorus Line –brought him world-wide fame.A musical prodigy accepted to Juilliard at age six, Hamlisch defiedclassical expectations to create his own music, dedicating his tal-ents to musical theater and pop music composition. By age 31, he

achieved unprecedented success and honors with a string of smashhits, and then his streak ended. Faced with overwhelming pressureand sky-high expectations to repeat his hits, Hamlisch fell into aself-described “period of suffocating despair,” before rebounding tofind true love worthy of a Broadway musical and renewed passionfor creation.

Hamlisch’s personal archival treasure trove and candid newinterviews with Hamlisch’s family and close friends produces adeeply personal, insider portrait of one of the greatest artists of ourtime. This special reveals the events that led to both his staggeringsuccess and, ultimately, his even greater humanity: his creativeprocess, struggles, inner turmoil and breakthroughs.

How SherlockChanged theWorld

Tuesday, December 17 at 9 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1

he fictional Sherlock Holmes was a scientist

who used chemistry, bloodstains and minute

traces of evidence to catch criminals. In an

era when eyewitness reports and “smoking gun” evidence

were needed to convict criminals, Sherlock Holmes’ crime-

scene methods were revolutionary. Forensic scientists,

crime historians and Sherlockian experts reveal for the first

time the astonishing impact Arthur Conan Doyle’s creation

had on the development of real-life criminal investigation

and forensic techniques.

With a mix of interviews, dramatic reconstruction and

archives, the program explores real crimes that were solved

thanks to a piece of equipment Holmes used, a technique

he popularized or invented, or even his method of reason-

ing. The special will also assess the history of Holmes’

techniques from the 1880s to the present, showing how the

scientific techniques Holmes introduced to the world have

evolved into the stunning CSI-style forensic labs of

Scotland Yard and the FBI.

Nature: Animal Odd CouplesWednesday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1It’s time to challenge the notion that only humans form lasting friendships. Despite the odds, there are countless stories of the most unlikely cross-species relationships imaginable. Meetsome of these couples in this touching special, including a goat guiding a blind horse; a doewho regularly visits her Great Dane surrogate mother; a juvenile gibbon choosing to live witha family of capuchins; and a deer that adopted a golden retriever puppy. Instincts gone awry? The subject has mystified scientists for years. Informed by the observations of caregivers andnoted scientists Temple Grandin and Marc Bekoff, the film explores why animals form thesespecial bonds and what these relationships suggest about the nature of animal emotions.Originally airs Sunday, December 1 at 9 a.m.

Elvis, Aloha from HawaiiTuesday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1

resley was a man who knew how to rise to a challenge, and, in 1973, his manager,

Col. Tom Parker, came up with one of the biggest stunts of their career — staging a

live concert in Hawaii that would be beamed by satellite for TV broadcast in 40

countries to a global audience of 1.5 billion people. This was the first program to

ever be beamed around the world by satellite and Elvis responded with a typically dynamic show.

Now, forty years later, Vegas PBS airs this phenomenal concert featur-

ing the king of rock and roll singing some of his biggest hits and per-

sonal favorites, including “C.C. Rider,” “Burning Love,” “Suspicious

Minds,” “Steamroller Blues” and “American Trilogy.” Repeats Saturday,

n May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy committed the resources of our nation

and launched Project Apollo — the greatest technological undertaking in the

history of mankind. But in 1972, only two years after Neil Armstrong first walked

on the moon, public and political interest in Apollo had dwindled. The final moon

landing occurred in December 1972. This special recounts that historic voyage. It is a tribute

to three brave astronauts chosen for the mission and the thousands of men and women

behind them during the final days of NASA’s Apollo program. Featured are spectacular NASA

footage and exclusive interviews with space scientists who worked on the Apollo

program during the 60s and 70s.

Skeletons of the SaharaThursday, December 19at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBSChannel 10 and 10.1

xplorer and scientist Paul Sereno

made an extraordinary discovery

in the middle of the Sahara

desert. While prospecting for

dinosaur bones, he stumbled across an ancient

human cemetery more than 5,000 years older

than the Egyptian pyramids. Sereno has found

more than 200 burial plots, each more intrigu-

ing than the last: a man buried with his head

in a pot; another buried sitting in a turtle shell;

a girl with a bracelet carved from hippo bone;

and most striking of all, a woman embracing

two children, hands entwined in a triple burial.

Who were these people and what were they

doing in the middle of the desert? How did they

live and die? Go back into the desert with

Sereno and his team, who are excavating new

burials and making new finds.

Red Metal: The Copper Country Strike of 1913Tuesday, December 17 at 8 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1An epic labor strike that devastated Michigan’s Copper Country in 1913 haunts the Americanlabor movement to this day. Among the notable elements of that strike was the death of 73children at a union Christmas party, a tragedy immortalized by Woody Guthrie in his ballad“1913 Massacre.” The event remains the deadliest unsolved manslaughter in U.S. history. This program traces the Copper Country strike from its hopeful start to its heartrendingconclusion. Between those endpoints, it explores the intensifying battle between organizedlabor and corporate power, as well as issues of immigration and technology. As the centennialof the Italian Hall Disaster approaches, a new generation of Americans has begun payingtribute to the victims, while also deliberating the strike’s causes, outcomes and legacy.Richard Harris narrates.

FRONTLINE: From Jesus to Christ:The First ChristiansTuesdays, December 24 and 31 at 10 p.m.on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1This fascinating special presents the epic story of the rise of Christianity. Drawing upon newand sometimes controversial historical evidence, the series transports viewers back 2,000years to the time and place where Jesus of Nazareth once lived and preached, and challengesfamiliar assumptions and conventional notions about the origins of Christianity. The firstprogram traces the life of Jesus of Nazareth, exploring the message that helped his ministrygrow and the events that led to his crucifixion around 30 C.E. The film then turns to the peri-od that followed Jesus’ death, examining the rise of Christianity and concluding with the firstrevolt – the bloody and violent siege of Jerusalem and the beginning of a rift betweenChristianity and Judaism.

Secrets of the Dead: Bugging Hitler’s SoldiersThursday, December 26 at 10 p.m. on Vegas PBS Channel 10 and 10.1

pied upon by MI19 in a bugging operation of unprecedented scale and cunning,

4,000 German POWs revealed their inner thoughts about the Third Reich and let slip

military secrets that helped the Allies win WWII. The film tells the story of how those

conversations were recorded and how they can now reveal, in shocking detail, the

hearts and minds of the German fighter. Only now have more than 100,000 hours of these secret

recordings been declassified, researched and cross referenced. The documentary includes intense,

full-dialogue dramatic reconstructions that use the verbatim transcripts of these bugged conversa-

tions to reveal the dark heart of the Nazi regime as never before.
