Welcome to 12 Apostles Coast and Hinterland – where untamed spirits create inspirational wonder
Raw beauty and ever-changing dramaThe pure power of nature will change the way you see the world. Come marvel at the age-old clash of pounding tide and terra firma as the Southern Ocean relentlessly carves cliffs into leviathan rocky sculptures. Feel alive: witness the drama, hear the crashing waves, taste the salt on the sea air. Create and capture extraordinary moments, indelible memories.
Fertile gifts beyond Our stunning coastline is our flagship. Beyond, nature has gifted a fertile and abundant hinterland. Foodies can appreciate a wide spread of slow food and at-the-source produce on the 12 Apostles Gourmet Trail. Seek out wildlife encounters and haunting heritage tales, and get active in the great outdoors. It’s a natural, all-season environment where enlivening your spirit is as simple as cycling a trail or ambling along a remote beach.

Nature’s Drama Unfolds at Every StepDiscover deserted sandy beaches, dramatic views from isolated cliff tops, encounter abundant wildlife and walk beneath tall forest trees. Located in the Great Ocean Road region, the Great Ocean Walk follows the spectacular coastline of the iconic Great Otway and Port Campbell National Parks.
Thrill to native wildlife in its natural habitat. Look for kangaroos grazing on the river estuary from the viewing platform in Princetown, especially at dawn and dusk. From the boardwalk, gaze over wetlands to glimpse waterbirds in flight and feeding in the reeds. Take a clifftop vantage point to scan for gannets, albatross, nankeen kestrels and peregrine falcons. Spy penguins at dusk from the clifftop viewing platforms at Twelve Apostles and London Bridge, and from September to April witness the spectacular twilight return of thousands of mutton birds to Mutton Bird Island (Loch Ard Gorge). Rufus bristle birds are regularly sighted near the Loch Ard Gorge car park. After dark, take a torch-lit adventure to see the Melba Gully glow worms sparkle.

Witness Nature brandishing her brilliance
Commanding and charismaticThe Twelve Apostles are our headline act. For soul-stirring majesty, marvel at these giant ocean-bound rock stacks at sunset or dawn. Take up a perfect photo vantage point on the specially built viewing platform and capture the powerful drama. For an unforgettable bird’s eye perspective, take a flight over choppy seas. At Loch Ard Gorge, soak up the eerie legacy of maritime misadventure and explore geological features as you walk clifftop trails. Follow the coastal road and let nature reveal her many treasures: The Arch, London Bridge and The Grotto. Head beyond Peterborough to the less-crowded but equally magnetic Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands Coastal Park.Saunter along the Port Campbell Jetty and relax against a backdrop of jaw-dropping scenery. To the east, the 800m return walk to Gables Lookout near Moonlight Head (4.5km gravel road) rewards you with spectacular views over the ocean and reefs from one of the highest seacliffs in mainland Australia. Feeling fit? Descend more than 350 steps to Wreck Beach for haunting reminders of the sea’s treachery (only safe during low tide and calm seas).
Hinterland exhilarationFurther inland, climb (or drive) to the top of Mount Leura and tramp the breath-easy trail to nearby Mount Sugarloaf, a perfectly formed volcanic cone. The pay-off is panoramic, 360-degree views stretching across basalt plains. Follow up with a picnic by Lake Bullen Merri – a crater lake popular with anglers and boaters – and an afternoon ambling beneath ancient shady trees at Camperdown Botanic Gardens, where the sunset vista is a doozie.

At Cape Otway Lightstation, discover a many-layered tour and interpretation of shipwreck history, coastal ecology and the culture of the indigenous Gadabanud people who belong to the forests and coastline. The road north from Camperdown to Ballarat meanders through a volcanic landscape dotted with small peaks, lakes and historic sheep grazing properties. Call into charming rural towns en route and stop for the obligatory rusted windmill shot that defines real rural Australia.
