Based around Pakistani, Bengali, Indian and South Asian cultures, the Mela - meaning ‘to meet’ - brings together live music, dance, games and food in a family-friendly celebration. There’s also entertainment from some of the hottest contemporary Asian acts including songwriter Navin Kundra, urban musician Hunterz, folk and Punjabi pop singer Sona Walia. Watch where you tread at BALTIC as young London-based artist Jack Lavender’s intriguing works will be on display. The exhibition, comprising new and existing artworks, features sculpture and intriguing installations. Whether he’s covering surfaces with slippery glossy paper or tracking abstract whirls of paint across glass panels, his work is eye-catching and occasionally surreal. Gin lovers rejoice - Newcastle’s Pleased to Meet You is expanding to create a new dining area and underground cocktail bar.

A ROYAL AFFAIR
APPROACH WITH CAUTIONWhen we say Frankie Boyle is a ‘controversial’ comedian, we really mean it.
The Scottish comic’s legendary biting wit has seen him take chunks out of everyone from David Cameron (calling him a “shrewd and malevolent psychopath”) to “cultural tumour” Jeremy Clarkson and lambasting everyone from the Queen to Katie Price. At his best when he’s offensive and downright rude, expect plenty of bad language and naughty humour at these work-in-progress shows. The Stand Sept 6-7 & 13-14, £15 thestand.co.uk

FLORENCE & THE MACHINE
FLORENCE & THE MACHINE
LOST IN MUSICIt’s hard to say where Florence’s ‘out there’ persona comes from - certainly not her mum, Evelyn, who was educated at Harvard and the Warburg Institute and is professor of Renaissance Studies and Vice-Principal for Arts and Sciences at King’s College London.
In her first band, the beautifully named Toxic Cockroaches, Florence was the guitarist, “although I didn’t have a guitar. My friend was the bassist but she didn’t have a bass. We did have a drummer but she couldn’t play the drums. She had a kit, though. When I started Florence And The Machine it was really just me with a drum - some things never change.”
The name Florence And The Machine started off as a joke. “I made music with my friend, who we called Isabella Machine to which I was Florence Robot. When I was about an hour away from my first gig, I still didn’t have a name, so I thought ‘Okay, I’ll be Florence Robot Is A Machine’ before realising that name was so long it’d drive me mad.”
Isabella Summers (aka Machine) was Florence’s younger sister’s babysitter. She is now the band’s keyboardist and co-writer, and has produced for stars including Iggy Azalea.
AHEAD OF HER ARRIVAL IN TOON THIS MONTH WE DECIDED TO GET TO KNOW FLORENCE LEONTINE MARY WELCH – HERE’S WHAT WE FOUND OUT…
Metro Radio Arena, September 15, from £19.50, metroradioarena.co.uk
Welch’s partying stories include the time she drank so many dirty martinis with Kanye West and Lykke Li that she woke up in the Bowery Hotel in New York in a room she had set on fire and with a chipped tooth. There was also the night at her dad’s campsite in Sussex when she had to sleep in Shamanic Sid’s caravan. Honest…
On her rock ‘n’ roll lfiestyle in her early 20s Florence says: “Oh, it was fab. I had a great time. I think I just funned myself out. I’m glad, I needed to – but there were moments where I wish I hadn’t ended up on the news, singing a crazy karaoke version of Get Lucky in a tiki bar and crowdsurfing on to nobody.”
Welch’s musical influences include Stevie Nicks and her mum. One of her mum’s lectures inspired her to aspire to make music with “some of the big themes - sex, death, love, violence - that will still be part of the human story in 200 years’ time.”
Florence’s flamboyant performances have always been a big part of who she is. “I was always that girl who you could find dancing down supermarket aisles. Dancing in supermarkets is my favourite thing - it’s such a strange place because no one will look at you.”

PROPER PUBS
A ‘PROPER’ DAY OUTA good life is full of subtle pleasures, and there can be little more rewarding than enjoying a decent pint after a hard day’s work. With that in mind, and with half a hard day’s work done, we headed out to some of Toon’s ‘proper’ pubs...
The Earl of Pitt Street, near St James’ Park, may describe itself as a ‘bespoke independent bar/restaurant’ but the cosy bar is nowhere near as ‘hipster’ as it sounds. The décor is old-school - think Alfred Hitchcock dressed by Vivienne Westwood. Funky touches sit comfortably alongside traditional themes, with the concept flowing into the menu - a modern fusion with some typically local flair (as you’d expect from those behind Electric East). Of course, there is a superb range of real ales and craft lagers on offer too.
You’ll not find any salty sea dogs in the ocean liner-themed Bacchus on High Bridge, but you will find a pub celebrating the region’s ship building heritage with gusto. CAMRA’s Tyneside Pub of the Year four years in a row (2009-2012), the Bacchus is home to a plethora of cask ales and microbrewery beers aplenty. Settle into a comfy high-backed chair and enjoy a classy night out.
Tucked away in Old George Yard behind High Bridge, The Old George is Newcastle’s oldest pub, dating back to 1582. It’s tough to pull yourself away from the roaring fires and comfy leather armchairs, and let’s be honest, why
would you? The pub has even had a Royal seal of approval – we’re told King Charles I was a regular!
The snug Crown Posada is a world away from the bustle of the ‘new’ Quayside. The Victorian Grade II-listed pub packs a charm-filled punch; its unusual and elaborately panelled entrance opens up into a long bar with original stained glass and a wonderful atmosphere, day or night. It may be a tight squeeze, but it does mean you’re never too far away from a great pint!
A little further down the hill, The Bridge Tavern – with its stunning roof terrace, touching distance from the Tyne Bridge - may be one of the new kids on the block, but it prides itself on proper food and beer. Brewing its own beer on site means there’s always a great selection of well-kept artisan ales alongside an award-winning pint of Wylam Brewery’s best. There’s also superb British comfort food served with a local twist – try the North Sea Mackerel Pasty (and thank us later).
If it’s a view of the iconic Quayside you’re after, The Bridge Hotel’s beer garden can’t be beaten. Built on a medieval site near the old castle, the decorative interior has plenty of nooks and crannies to hide away in. Offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere, regular live music and sports, and a historic location to boot, you don’t get more ‘proper pub’ than this.
