Art is more than an escape. It engages the mind and
emotions, raising us to higher aspirations, reminding
us of bigger pictures and better days. Given the
events of the last few months and the myriad ways
the COVID-19 pandemic has upended our lives, we’ve
never needed art more than we do now. But with so
many museums and galleries closed or on the far side
of travel restrictions, how can we experience it?
Virtually, of course. (Note that although these sites
are free, galleries still need funds to operate. Please
consider making a donation if you are able to do so.)
The Wright stuff
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Hollyhock House is an
architectural masterpiece and one of the top cultural
landmarks of Los Angeles. Now those who love art
and architecture can explore it at their leisure, thanks
to a new virtual tour that was originally designed for
those with disabilities.
The home was added to the UNESCO World Heritage
List last July, and shortly afterward the City of Los
Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs collaborated

with the Department on Disability and the Barnsdall
Art Park Foundation to put it online and make it
accessible to everyone.
The project also includes digital archives of original
drawings and blueprints detailing plans for an
ambitious arts complex that was partially realized by
Wright and Hollyhock House’s original owner, Aline
Barnsdall.

Google’s gallery
If you’ve ever visited, say, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris
and been disheartened by the selfie-stick-wielding
hordes, you’ll be delighted to discover that you can
now browse through some of the world’s greatest
cultural institutions from the comfort of your screen.
Google Arts & Culture has teamed up with more than
2,500 museums and galleries to create virtual tours
and online exhibits. The collection includes London’s
British Museum, Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, the
Guggenheim in New York City, Vancouver Art
Gallery and much, much more.
Indeed, if you missed it back in 2014, this is one of
the best places to view the very first major museum
show ever for Vancouver’s own Douglas Coupland.
His VAG exhibition everywhere is anywhere is
anything is everything explored the key themes in his
art, including the interpretation of Canadian-ness in
works by the Group of Seven and Emily Carr.

Of course, not all museums are on the Google portal.
Some have instead created their own virtual tours.
Among them is the Louvre in Paris, which offers
tours of several galleries and exhibitions, including
its Egyptian antiquities and the remains of its moat.

In Rome, the Vatican Museums have virtually flung
open their doors to offer 360-degree views of seven
historic and sacred spaces including the Sistine
Chapel, as well as a guided You Visit tour of St.
Peter’s Basilica and Square.
And even though you can’t make like Ferris Bueller
and visit the Art Institute of Chicago in person, you
can still get lost in the fine points of A Sunday on La
Grand Jatte and 571 other works thanks to this
magnificent gallery’s virtual tour.
