A clean sweep of Atlantic City and County wasmade Tuesday at the Primary Election by the regularRepublican Organization. The candidates nominatedfor the Republican Ticket are all men of integrityand ability, men in whom the public has confidence,as demonstrated by the overwhehning majority bywhich they were nominated. The election was themost orderly in the history of Atlantic City, not-withstanding the predictions that the resort woulda "seething cauldron of riot and disorder," and thehatched-up sensations of outside journals.

That the political aspirations of the antis aredoonled to certain destruction is assured. The public

is becoming tired of their harping and if they refuseto take their fair defeat at the Prinlaries seriously

/

ttjey will receive ~ more substantial rebuff at the

~ ls in November. For the people of Atlantic

County have fMth in the Republican Organization;

the3- know that the prosperity of the resort has beenfostered by its principles, that continued success willresult from the perpetuation of those policies wMch

have for so many years obtained in Atlantic County

We have made wonderful strides as a people

and nation since Robert Fulton laune, hed the "Cler-mont’" on the Hudson River and made the first flip

/on ~ter in a vessel propel!ed by steam. In ~o likeperiod of years in the history of the world has suchgreat and lasting progTess been realized. Others hadexperimented with steanl engines ha boats beforeFulton, but it remained for him, in spite of dis-

couragement that would have daunted an ordinaryman, to build a steam-boat that would run. Nowmammoth steamers cross the ocean, circumnavigate

7the globe and open conlmerce in every part of the

civilizal world. \V-lille steam is used as a nlotivepower for vessels the name of l~ulton will occupy a

,prominent place among the great inventors of the-world. The influence his invention has land on

0

national inter.course is bevond comprehensio:a. Per-

haps some other would have perfected the marinesteam engine had he failvd or E>econ~.~: alscouraged;

/but Robert Fulton did succee’d and to him belongs

the glory of the achievement.i

Frequent fatalities on the electrified third-rail ofthe \Vest Jersey and Seashore Railroad seem tojustify the contention ttmt the rail should be gqardedalop.g those portions }mw exp6ged to travelers on

and near the railroad¯ The company claims indefense that its right of way is private property andthat the victims shoulK have avoided trespassing

thereon. That is true; but is there not a moral obli-gation on the officials of the railroad to safeguardthe public in a more thorough manner ? The manwho has a dangerous dog that tears strangers whenthey go near him, nlay be beyond the reach of thelaw if the dog is chained, but is not freed from moralresponsibility. Certainly, death is too severe apunishment for mere trespassing.

There are two great defects in the new Fall

schedule of the electric railroad which took effectTuesday last. There is no mid-afternoon tr’ain toAtlantic City stopping at the Court House Stationnor no evening train to Philadelphia between 7.22and 1t.22 o’clock. While we should feel gratefulfor the excellent .~ervice we have enjoyed heretoforeand which is indeed praiseworthy in the .newschedule, we cannot~help feeling that, as the Coffnty

Seat, the railroad should make the sen-ice stillbetter at this point. An effort to have at least twoadditional trains stopped at the Court House Stationdaring the Fall and Winter is in order.

"If at’first you ’don’t succeed, try, try again,"

seems to be the motto of the Board of Education, which has caused notices to be posted throughoutttanlilton Township of a third special school electionon the~eleventh of October. The two propositionssubmitted at the last election, calling for the issuance.of $30,000 bonds for the erection of a" new HighSchool building or $12:000 for additions and altera-tions to the old, will be again subnaihed. ¯¯There is

luck in odd numbers, say the sages, so let-us in@Igein a w:ish that the third elect,oh may be final.

t

:Chief among our inherited riches of the past arethe sage counselg of great men, whose reflections onthe life of their times apply equally well to our ownday. Among the men of the past whose writings havemost helped mankind was Francis Bacon, thegreatest philosopher of his age, who died nearly twohundred years ago. His writings abound with

practical suggestions for right living and have beentreasured by rich and poor. Read hissuggestionson the regimen of health: "There is a wisdom," hesays, "beyond the rules .of physic in this; a man’sown observation, what ]~e finds good of, and what he

finds hurt of, is the best physic to preserve health, but it is a safer cdncusion to say thL’~ agreeth well with

me, therefore I will continue it; I find no. offense ofthis, therefore I may use it; for strength of n~turein youth passeth over. many excesses, which areowing a man until his age; discern of the coming onof years, and think not to~1o the stone things stillBeware of any sudden change of diet. To be freemh~ded and cheerfully disposed at hours of meatand of sleep and exercise, is tt~e best precept of longlasting. If you fly physic in health altogether, itwill be too strong for ",-our body when you shall needit; if you make it too familiar it will work no ex}ra-ordinary effect when sickness cometh. In sickness

principally respect health, ahd in h~:alth action; for.those that put their bodies to endure in health, may

in most sicknesses which are very sharp be caredonly with diet and good tending." All the wisdom

that science has revealed to modern medicine knowsno more potent factors for good health than these~ilnple rules that Bacon wrote two hundred yearsal~go.

Viewing the general climatic con~tJtions of thepast season from this distance it is evident that we

were particularly free from inclement weather, windstorms and efectrical disturbances. There were fewstorms more than a day in duration. Thundershowers were few and not severe. Added to this thecomparative scarcity of that abominable pest, themosquito, permitted residents of Atlantic County tolive in peace and comfort. Altogether the season wasone favorable to health and happiness, for which weshould return thanks to Providence. No connnunity

is entirely free fram objectionable features; but theshortcomings of Atlantic County as a place ofresidence are~}’ar outnmnbered by its attractions, and

we should endeavor, at all seasons and all times, tomake the best of our blessings and to deserve them

by striving for better homes, better munieipaltiesand better living in general. We should so live inthis generation than those following may deriveinspiration to greater improvements by oar example. To live for the present is selfish, narrow, unholy.

We should measlsre our development in this centuryby those which have gone before and view it withthe prophetic eve of futurity, so that our highestpraise when tiffs generation has passed away will be,they did the best they could. Given such favorableopportunities for advance along all lines of life as wenow enjoy it is cur bounden duty to foster civic im-

provements, promote the cause of education, raisethe standard of home life and emancipate ourselvesfrom prejudice, narrowness of mind and all thathinders improvement, private or public. Progressis the rule of the day.

The government has shown i~s interest in theHudson-Fulton cdebration bv issuing souvc~firstamps. The new design is artistic in conception and is one ofthe best engraved stamps ever printed in America.

The Musical Bato~When was the musical baton first

used in England? Present musical fes.Urals have provoked the query. Itwas surely at the phllharmo.nle eo~-eerts In 1820 wben Spohr used one tothe great astonishment of the audi-ence. It was not until ten or twelveyears later, however, that the batoneame-lnto general use. A German con.ductor who wielded one produced suchwonderful results with hl~ orchestrathat It was thought there must besome magic power in’the baton, andIt consequently became popul~, with-conductors all over the eount~. Be-fore the- advent of the baton time was-kept by the flr~ violinist or by theplanlsL--London Chronicle.
