Syllabus This unit aims to equip students with the skills and understanding to create a dynamic website that leverages a commonly deployed Content Management System (CMS). Through the development of an e-commerce website, students will gain experience in creating a commercially-oriented project while drawing upon previously learned skills in interactivity design to build a compelling front-end interface for a small to medium business.

Introduction In DIG351 you will learn how to design an e-commerce website using WordPress as a content management system. You will develop and extend your existing skills in both technical ability and conceptual understanding.  You will undertake various exercises to expand your research methods, technical expertise, and idea exploration.  The theme is broad and allows you the flexibility to determine your own personal interest and to direct your creative practice.  You will be introduced to principles of good design for e-commerce websites. While each project and exercise has set parameters, there is room to develop and extend your own ideas within the realms of the theme.

In this unit, the emphasis is on developing your ideas and extending your knowledge and understanding of web design towards a fully functioning e-commerce website in WordPress. The practical aspect of your investigations will involve spending most of your time working in Photoshop to create your mockups, coding this in HTML5 and CSS, creating a theme in WordPress and adding content. As you progress in your study, you will be expected to take more responsibility and initiative for what you create (subject) and how you create it (technique/process).   Regular contact and dialogue with your tutor and peers in the discussion room will enable you to extend your knowledge and understanding of web design.   

A demonstrated curious and innovative approach in your study will enable you to acquire the necessary skills to become an independent and successful designer.

While you have the benefit of flexible study time as an online student you are expected to spend at least 10 hours per week on this unit. Depending on your own study strategies, we recommend 2-3 hours reading through the study guide learning materials, 1-2 hours in the discussion board connecting with your peers and asking your tutor questions and 6-7 hours per week working on your assignments. Your tutor has specific allocated hours per week based on the the unit enrolment/group size, therefore discussion or email response time may vary between 1-2 days.

1. Assessment Task 1: Pre-Production Documentation

Due: Week 5 - Monday 28 March – you may submit on Tuesday 29 March without late submission penalties.

INTRODUCTION

Over the duration of this Study Period you will develop a visual branding for a company and create an e-commerce website that is congruent with the visual identity of this company. Your e-commerce website will use WordPress as its Content Management System (CMS). The development process will consist of three production stages. An initial documentation stage, a prototype development stage and delivery of the Final e-Commerce Website.

When developing the e-Commerce website, you may design it with your own fictitious company in mind. Alternatively, you may design the website for an existing small business that doesn’t already have any distinctive visual branding, nor any website. For your first assignment, you will produce documentation that clearly articulates your intended design approach for this website and the visual branding of the company.

DOCUMENTATION MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

You may format your documentation in any manner that you like, as long as the minimum requirements outlined here are addressed. Alternatively, you may utilise the provided documentation template and customize it to suit your needs. (Template available on Blackboard site.) Your proposed website documentation must be based on delivering a Final e-Commerce Website according to the “Final Website Minimum Requirements” specified in Assignment 3 Brief (See Blackboard site). The project documentation should contain evidence of research and articulate your ideas and proposed design approach. This assignment has a minimum word count of 2000, up to a maximum of 2500 words. Failure to adhere to these limits may adversely affect your mark. Expressing your ideas clearly but succinctly is an important aspect of this assignment.

A. RESEARCH FOLIO:

Research is critical at this juncture in the design process. To design an effective e-Commerce website and devise a distinctive online branding for your company, you should conduct visual research to inform your design process. This could take the form of analyzing the logos/visual branding/websites of similar existing companies and critically studying their e-Commerce websites to distil and refine your own approach. You should also consider looking at other non-eCommerce sites for some design inspiration. As part of your research process, you may also want to expand upon your knowledge in advanced design/usability theory and coding techniques. You should also do research into identifying your target audience.

Collate and summarize only the most pertinent research information into your Research Folio. Each research item must include its full citation in Chicago Author-Date format and a description of how the research has influenced your own work/ideas. This research should inform the Design Brief component of this assignment, and provide you with the basis for your design rationale (See the heading “C. Design Brief” below for further details).

 

B. SKETCHBOOK:

The design process is an iterative one. As you conceptualize, refine and iterate upon your design ideas, you should use a sketchbook to document your design development and ‘rough work’. Some elements that should be contained within the Sketchbook include brainstorming, ideas generation, design development and visual design experimentation. At the conclusion of your design experimentation, you should choose the ‘best’ design based on its merits in addressing your design needs, as well as the assignment requirements. This ‘best’ design will be the one that you formally propose and visualize in the Design Brief , Wireframes & Screen Mockups components of this assignment.

You are free to choose the actual medium for your design development/experimentation. Some students may feel at ease with using Photoshop/GIMP to play around with potential design ideas for their sketchbook. Others may prefer to hand-draw sketches and/or use collage techniques with paper and glue to explore different design ideas. Whichever medium you choose, be sure to include clear, high quality pictures of your design development/experimentation in the documentation.

 

C. DESIGN BRIEF:

The design brief should provide a clear description of the key facets of your proposed website design. It should be written under the following headings: Company Description (ie. Background, Types of Products/Services, Target Audience), Project Goal, Website Content, Website Visual Treatment, Company Visual Branding Treatment and Technical Treatment. These key facets must be described in the context of research-supported design rationale. Design rationale is not based just on a designer's personal preferences, whims or fancies – it must be based on research in relevant design/usability theory, your target market (aka potential customers). Finally your design approach should be grounded in rationale about the proposed visual branding of your company. You will need to draw upon and reference the material gathered in your Research Folio to successfully complete this component of the Documentation. In-text citations and the master bibliography list must be presented in Chicago Author-Date format.

 

D. WIREFRAMES & SCREEN MOCKUPS:

This component allows both you and your tutor to clearly visualize what the proposed website design will look like. You must deliver a total of 3 wireframes and 3 screen mockups illustrating your proposed design. These diagrams must be produced for your homepage, one content page and one store page. If you are producing a single page website, you may provide diagrams consisting of these different sections of your site.

elements of the page must be clearly annotated. (ie. Main navigation menu, sub-menu, website title/banner, content area, text display areas, image boxes etc). You should use blank ‘X’ boxes as image placeholders with dimensions clearly indicated indicated. You may use ipsem lorem placeholder text.

A good free software option for creating wireframes is "The Pencil Project" application (http://pencil.evolus.vn/ ). It is an easy to use software that is open-source and available for all platforms. Alternatively, you may use any other diagramming software of your choice.

Screen Mockups

You can think of the screen mockups as non-interactive, but visually accurate ‘screen capture’ (i.e. still image) versions of your website pages. As such, your mockups should not contain ipsum lorem text or placeholder images. Screen mockups must be presented in full colour and illustrate the exact appearance of a page. You must abide by copyright law for your use of content (ie. You may not use copyrighted source content even if they are referenced).

Where appropriate the diagram should include a description of special interaction or text input that may be required of the user, and/or a description of ecommerce elements contained on the page.

You must use an image editing software like Gimp or Photoshop to produce your Screen Mockups. Include the resultant mockups as full-resolution JPEGs into your project documentation.

 

E. SITE MAP:

Your site map should be a diagram that shows the page hierarchy of your website. It should be digitally produced using software like "The Pencil Project" application. Alternatively, you may use any other diagramming software of your choice.

DELIVERABLES

1. Completed Pre-Production documentation (PDF) uploaded to the Blackboard assignment dropbox.

Your assignment submission must contain a front cover page. When filling it out, remember to type your name into the space provided under 'Declaration' to confirm the assignment is your own work, this will suffice as a 'digital signature'. If you aren’t using the provided template, you must include your own assignment cover page with the relevant details.

File Format: The submitted assignment must be in Adobe PDF format.

File Size: The submitted PDF document must be no larger than 10MB. You may need to use a PDF compression utility/service to reduce your initial file size.

File Naming: The submitted PDF file must follow this naming convention “A1-YourFullName.pdf”

Note: A1 stands for “Assignment 1”

PROTOTYPE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

The Prototype must adhere to the following minimum requirements:

l As part of this assignment requirement, you must install WordPress on your server and also install a suitable shop plugin. The shop page must be populated with a minimum of 20 products. You must provide the URL of your shop page in this assignment’s accompanying Progress Report (aka Presentation). Additionally, you must include screenshots in your Progress Report, showing these 20 products as populated within your shop page.

l The Prototype must contain a HTML5/CSS3 created website that is separate to the WordPress shop installation above. This website must contain two completed pages – the homepage and one inner page. You are permitted to use other appropriate web technologies, but you must first discuss their implementation with your tutor. You are permitted use “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG) website authoring tools like Adobe Dreamweaver however you should be coding everything from scratch to ensure best practices are adhered to.

l Any 3rd party scripts/code that has been utilized in your website must be referenced ‘in-situ’ using code comments as well as in the ‘Website Bibliography List’ in your Progress Report.  

l You must demonstrate a thorough understanding of HTML5 by neatly organizing and labeling the code such that each line of browser-visible information is on a separate line without combining multiple lines. Where appropriate, code must be indented to enhance readability. The main elements for each of your HTML5 pages must be annotated with appropriate ‘code comments’ to demonstrate your understanding of the code (you may wish to create your own original templates to speed up site development. Talk to your tutor for template creation tips). Your code comments must also include references for individual copyrighted materials ‘in-situ’ as they appear in your website. (eg. When you utilise a script that someone else has created, you must include code comments before that script to indicate its reference source.) Refer to the ‘Code Comments’ exemplar provided on the Blackboard site for an indication of how to approach code commenting in your assignment.

l Test your website in the 5 main desktop browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera. Refer to the latest Browser Statistics maintained by W3S (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp). Your website must work and look acceptable across the first and second most used versions of each brand of browser. Your site need not be fully compatible with mobile devices - ‘responsive design’ is beyond the scope of this unit.

l If you do not already have one, you must procure a web host with File Transfer Protocol (FTP) capability. For assignment submission, the website files must be published to your FTP server by the specified deadline. The website must be viewable through a web browser from the website address or

DELIVERABLES     

1. WordPress installed and functional on your server, including a suitable shop plugin populated with a minimum of 20 products. Plus, a fully functional and accessible ‘live’ Prototype located on your FTP server.

l Where to Submit: If you do not already have one, you must procure a web host with File Transfer Protocol (FTP) capability. For assignment submission you must publish the Prototype to your FTP server by the specified deadline. After uploading, check that your website is viewable through a web browser at the URL that you have specified in your Progress Report.

2. A “.zip” archive that contains your entire Prototype (your site coded in HTML5 and CSS) plus an accompanying Progress Report  PDF document. You may utilize the provided Progress Report template, or else create your own. The Progress Report should outline your research and conceptual development for Assignment 2. It must contain a changelog outlining the changes made to the website since your previous Progress Report. If there have been deviations to your site’s design since your previous Progress Report, you must include some research-informed design rationale to support these revisions. The Progress Report must contain a compiled ‘Website Bibliography List’ of any 3rd party created scripts that have been used in the website. Additionally, you must include screenshots in your Progress Report showing the 20 products as populated within your shop page. Remember to clearly state both the prototype website URL as well as the WordPress shop page URL.

File Naming: The submitted .zip file must be called “A2-YourFullName.zip”   Note: A2 stands for “Assignment 2”

FINAL WEBSITE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

The Final Website must adhere to the following minimum requirements:

1. The Final Website must be a fully functioning WordPress theme using your previously created website (Assignment 2). The Wordpress theme should have all elements styled to fit the look and feel of your previously created website (Assignment 2). It must present all the proposed content including a minimum of 20 products within the store.

2. The Final Website must be marked up in HTML5 and styled in CSS3. You are permitted to use other appropriate web technologies, but you must first discuss their implementation with your tutor. You are permitted use “What You See Is What You Get” (WYSIWYG) website authoring tools like Adobe Dreamweaver.

3. Any 3rd party scripts/code that has been utilized in your website must be referenced ‘in-situ’ using code comments as well as in the ‘Website Bibliography List’ in your Progress Report.  

4. You must demonstrate a thorough understanding of HTML5 by neatly organizing and labeling the code such that each line of browser-visible information is on a separate line without combining multiple lines. Where appropriate, code must be indented to enhance readability. The main elements for each of your HTML5 pages must be annotated with appropriate ‘code comments’ to demonstrate your understanding of the code (you may wish to create your own original templates to speed up site development. Talk to your tutor for template creation tips). Your code comments must also include references for individual copyrighted materials ‘in-situ’ as they appear in your website. (eg. When you utilise a script that someone else has created, you must include code comments before that script to indicate its reference source.) Refer to the ‘Code Comments’ exemplar provided on the Blackboard site for an indication of how to approach code commenting in your assignment.

5. Test your website in the 5 main brands of desktop browser: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and Opera. Refer to the latest Browser Statistics maintained by W3S (http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp). Your website must work and look acceptable across the first and second most used versions of each brand of browser. Your site need not be fully compatible with mobile devices - ‘responsive design’ is beyond the scope of this unit.

6. If you do not already have one, you must procure a web host with File Transfer Protocol (FTP) capability. For assignment submission, the website files must be published to your FTP server by the specified deadline. The website must be viewable through a web browser from the website address or URL that your web hosting company has provided.

 

DELIVERABLES     

1. A fully functional and accessible ‘live’ Final Website located on your FTP server.

l Where to Submit: If you do not already have one, you must procure a web host with File Transfer Protocol (FTP) capability. For assignment submission you must publish the Final Website to your FTP server by the specified deadline. After uploading, check that your website is viewable through a web browser at the URL that you have specified in your Progress Report.

2. A “.zip” archive that contains your entire Final Website plus an accompanying Progress Report PDF document. You may utilize the provided Progress Report template, or else create your own. The Progress Report must contain a changelog outlining the changes made to the website since your previous Progress Report. If there have been deviations to your site’s design since your previous Progress Report, you must include some research-informed design rationale to support these revisions. Finally, the Progress Report must contain a compiled ‘Website Bibliography List’ of any 3rd party created scripts that have been used in the website. If you are not using the provided Progress Report template, remember to include an assignment cover sheet that clearly states the ‘live’ website URL. Your URL for Assignment 3 must be different to your URL for Assignment 2.

  File Naming: The submitted .zip file must be called “A3-YourFullName.zip”     Note: A3 stands for “Assignment 3”

l Where to Submit: On the DIG351 Blackboard website, go to the ‘Assignments’ section of the site and scroll down to find the Dropbox for Assignment 3. Upload your single .zip archive to the dropbox by the due date.

l Due date: Refer to Unit Outline and Blackboard Assessment Dropbox description.

 Note: The ‘live’ website and Blackboard website submissions must both be fully-functional and identical.

Late submissions without prior extension approval will be penalized at 10% per calendar day in accordance with university policy.

Pass requirements

There are three assignments items required for assessment. You must submit all three assignments and achieve a final grade of 50% or more to pass the unit.

 

Fair assessment through moderation

Moderation describes a quality assurance process to ensure that assessments are appropriate to the learning outcomes, and that student work is evaluated consistently by assessors. Minimum standards for the moderation of assessment are described in the Assessment and Student Progression Manual, available from policies.curtin.edu.au/policies/teachingandlearning.cfm

Late assessment policy

This ensures that the requirements for submission of assignments and other work to be assessed are fair, transparent, equitable, and that penalties are consistently applied.

1. All assessments students are required to submit will have a due date and time specified on this Unit Outline. 2. Students will be penalised by a deduction of ten percent per calendar day for a late assessment submission

(eg a mark equivalent to 10% of the total allocated for the assessment will be deducted from the marked value for every day that the assessment is late). This means that an assessment worth 20 marks will have two marks deducted per calendar day late. Hence if it was handed in three calendar days late and given a mark of 16/20, the student would receive 10/20. An assessment more than seven calendar days overdue will not be marked and will receive a mark of 0.

Assessment extension

A student unable to complete an assessment task by/on the original published date/time (eg examinations, tests) or due date/time (eg assignments) must apply for an assessment extension using the Assessment Extension form (available from the Forms page at students.curtin.edu.au/administration/) as prescribed by the Academic Registrar. It is the responsibility of the student to demonstrate and provide evidence for exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control that prevent them from completing/submitting the assessment task.

The student will be expected to lodge the form and supporting documentation with the unit coordinator before the assessment date/time or due date/time. An application may be accepted up to five working days after the date or due date of the assessment task where the student is able to provide an acceptable explanation as to why he or she was not able to submit the application prior to the assessment date. An application for an assessment extension will not be accepted after the date of the Board of Examiners' meeting.

Deferred assessments

If your results show that you have been granted a deferred assessment you should immediately check your OASIS email for details.

Digital Design problems can be solved in many different ways, some more productive than others. Feedback from your tutor will help steer you towards more efficient solutions for solving issues such as usability, aesthetics, information organisation or technological application. Feedback from your tutor does not necessarily indicate fault - these discursive comments do not necessarily need to be acted upon, but rather operate as opportunities to reflect on your designs and processes. When used constructively, this feedback should encourage you to consider other strategies or approaches to implement your solutions to the design brief. Good design is about efficient and effective problem solving and usually happens in a team situation within a design firm.
