Gray-Scale Washing is atechnique for painting miniaturesvery fast with very nice andsmooth shading and highlighting.
As I was a kid and learning topaint, a friend of mine (who wasmuch older and had beenpainting for many more yearsthan me) showed me aninteresting painting technique. He had primed his miniatures
black and dry-brushed themwhite before painting them withinks. It didn!t look very good, butit did have an unique feel.
Many years later, GamesWorkshop discontinued their inkline and replaced it with thewashes line. I had rememberedthat strange technique of myfriend!s and wanted to try it with
the new washes. To my surpriseit looked pretty good. Over thenext few months I played withthe idea some more until I felt it
was perfected.
Here is a step by stepprocess to painting an ImperialGuardsmen.

Before we begin, we must
prep our miniature. Assemble theminiature and flock the base with some
sand. Be sure to use a fine grain. Also,be sure to shave off any mold lines.
You should always do this, but withGray-Scale Washing its very important
as mold lines will stick out like a sore
thumb when you!re done.
Next, prime the miniature witha white spray.
The n, cover the who le
miniature with a coat of Badab BlackWash...even the sand.
Lastly, give the miniature anextremely light dry-brush with Skull
White. This last step is not necessary, but I have found that after the black
wash the miniature is a bit too dark.
The miniature is now gray-scaled and ready to be painted. Thisgray-scaling as taken care of all your
shading, highlights, and base.
NOTE: Another approach is to spraythe miniature black and then dry-brush
your way from gray to white. It looksalmost exactly the same (although abit darker) but i found it to take a bit
longer to do.
Although it ! s nearly impossible to tell from the above pictures,
the top miniature has been given a coat of black wash, and the
bottom miniature has been given a light dry-brush of white.
1: Paint the skin with one coat ofOgryn Flesh. With all these steps, don!t be afraid to kinda glob it one.You can be really generous witheach step.

2: Paint the fatigues with one coat oGryphonne Sepia.
3: Paint the armor and gun casewith two coats of a mix of ThrakaGreen and Devlan Mud. The mishould be about 60% Green, 40%Mud. 50/50 was just a bit too brown
4: Take some Chainmail and water down until it!s as thin as a wash. Yowant the gray-scale you made tshow through the silver as well. Painthe rest of the gun with this silver. Bcareful as it!s runny. Once this is drygive the silver a coat of Badab BlackOnce again, don!t be afraid to bgenerous.

5: Paint the boots, belt, and gearChaos Black. I was lazy and left it atthat, but if you want a really goodlook you can paint on multiple coatsof Badab Black. It looks real nice,
but takes forever.
Usually I just water down someChaos Black and leave it at that.
6: Finally paint the imperial eaglesSkull White and when dried givethem a coat of watered downAsurman Blue.
Paint the sand with a coat of DevlanMud, the rim with Bestial Brown, andadd a couple tuffs of static grass.
BE SURE EVERYTHING IS DRY
BEFORE ADDING STATIC GRASS.
