• Graphic designers create visual concepts, by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. They help to make an organization recognizable by selecting color, images, or logo designs that represent a particular idea or identity to be used in advertising and promotions.

Work Environment

• Most graphic designers are employed in fields like advertising and promotion.

• In 2010, an estimated 29% of graphic designers were self employed.

Why Would You Want To Become One?

• Have you ever wanted your work to be viewed by hundreds of thousands of people? That’s what a graphic designers job is. They create advertisement symbols and logos that are viewed hundreds if not thousands of times a day.

Work Hours

• You make your own hours. All that is required is that you turn in the creation by the usual deadline

Responsibilities

• Graphic designers have many responsibilities.

• Deadlines, work quality, generic appeal; these are all things that graphic designers must think about.

Travel

• Graphic Designers are not usually required to travel, but some companies may request it depending on the work.

Required Skills

• A Bachelors degree in graphic design is usually required, and MUST be able to use a computer graphics program effectively. (Though if you have a degree, you should already have extensive knowledge in this department.)

Wages

• The average annual wages for graphic designers in 2010 was $43,500.

Conclusion

• I personally would not mind this job, but I have other career plans.

• I can still see why someone would like this job; lots of freedom in how you go about it, yet enough guidelines that you aren’t overwhelmed trying to come up with something that the customer might like.
