Joshua ‘Josh’ McCudden (sometimes goes by the name of ‘Henry Dean’) is a 19 year old guy who currently lives in Wagga Wagga, NSW. He has a passion for music and production. In this interview you will recieve and insight into this interesting young guy.

What are you? Guitarist, singer and song writer.

How long have you been doing this? High school. I was a part of most school produc-tions, mostly in the band and production of the shows.

What did you want to be when you were little?Lot’s of things. Deep down I knew that I wanted to be involved within the arts genre. Whether that was painting, drawing, music or production. What do you wish to achieve? To be appreciated within the music industry. Also to be accepted into JMC Academy in Melbourne. Studying a bachelor of arts in Music and produc-tion engineering. What do you stand for? I stand for equality of everybody, regardless of race, age of sexual preference, freedom of opinion, unity and acceptance of all types of lifestyles and damn good music!! :P I always try and be the best I can be. I am a strong believer in loyalty, honesty and friendship being one of the strongest aspects of day to day life.

What motivates you to keep going? The science and emotion that goes with hearing music keeps me going. I’m discovering many types of emotion hiding in chord progressions every day, this is enough to keep me writing music and enjoying other’s music. What has been your biggest lesson?Listen to your own heart. After all in the end you are all you have.

What/who are your inspirations? Elton John, as he showed the world that you don’t need to conform to the music of the time, for people to like your songs. He created and thrived in his own singer/songwriter genre, all because he believed in himself. Who is a creative, dead or alive who you would like to collaborate with? John Lennon, as his raw qualities and genius he possessed with his guitar as well as his politeness to fellow musicians. What’s the best advice you have been given?“Friends are the ones who walk in when everyone else has walked out.”

What does the future hold for you?Hopefully the future holds for me and album. As EP’s are only a taste of someone’s material and not a full catalogue, which is what I think people are interested in.

How has the year been for Mannequins so far?We got off to a bit of a slow start because we’ve just had a new guitarist come in and we’ve had to get him up to speed with all of our songs etc but now that we’re on track we’ve booked some gigs and we’re ready to make 2011 a good year for us

Describe your sound. It’s essentially alternative rock. Loud guitar riffs and drums, with a catchy pop side to it also. We put a lot of work into the song writing, structure and the lyr-ics and just try to come up with new ideas so we’re always trying to evolve our sound. We don’t want to repeat ourselves too much.

As a developing band, do you feel regional Australia is nurturing and embracing of young talent? Not as much as it could be. There’s not a great deal of opportunity for us in Wagga and we often find that venues here only want to book cover bands because there’s no risk of losing money. That being said there are people that try to help us out, along with the other younger bands in town but there’s only so much they can do given the circumstances.

What are your musical influence? All four of us listen to a lot of music. We just try to learn from a wide range of artist which helps us push the boundaries and keep it fresh when we write songs. We also have a lot of respect for

Australian bands who do just as well as international bands and remain remembered. We aspire to be one of those bands.

What have been the biggest highlights/ challenges you guys have come across in trying to break into the industry? The main challenges we’ve had originate from living in regional Australia. Progressing in a band requires money for recording, traveling, musical gear etc and our money has been made very slowly. The outcome is always positive. It just takes longer than it would for a band in Melbourne or Sydney. The main highlight has really been when we travel to other cities and play to new crowds and they really enjoy it and we receive good feedback. It’s a good feeling of accomplishment.

Where do you guys hope to be in five years time? We’re currently in the middle of deciding where we want to move at the end of this year. We know that we definitely want to continue with the band but some of us have uni and other commitments which will determine where we end up but in five years time, I like to think we’d be traveling around the world playing to big crowds who listen to our CDs and come especially to see us.

Whats the weirdest thing you’ve ever licked? Hmmm I don’t really lick many weird things. I pretty fussy with the things I lick actually!

When somebody comes to you with a design/idea that wouldn’t exactly be the best decision what would be your response? No! Hahahahahaha or fuck off I am not doing that shit.

In light of the last question what is the place, which you would refuse a person a tattoo? Guys asses or dicks and fat chicks Danny (another tat-tooist at the shop) does them. Danny “I don’t do dicks”.

You have traveled around the world what would you say your favorite place is and why? As in a work sense? Holland was pretty good to work in but for travel I like Thailand for its sights (devilish grin).

Is the shop here in Wagga (Conspiracy ink) you first shop you have ran? No, a shop in Brisbane called Internal Graphics.

What bought you to Wagga in the first place? My Ute and me hahahahahahahahahahaha. But really work did.

Do you think you could settle here in Wagga or do you see yourself leaving to a bigger and better place, maybe even over seas? Maybe over seas, maybe retire in Thailand, maybe work in Holland and leave Danny here for three months at a time on his own with a guest artist hahahahaha-haha. Danny “fuck that we can both go and just get one guest artist in”

Final Question, when can I book in again? When I get back from this holiday in Thailand in about 3 weeks hahahaha.
