SELKIRK’S CARPENTRY PROGRAM SET KIDS STRAIGHT, PARENTS SAYArrow Lakes News - July 20, 2010: The main investor in Selkirk College’s carpentry program visited Nakusp last week to discuss the importance of the course to help them decide where to invest in the future.

Parents, council and education members alike last week all met with the Industry Training Authority (ITA) last Tuesday, July 6.

The meeting ended with no commitment made by ITA on more funding to come, but they said they would consider what was said and it would help with their funding decisions in the future.

Andrea Eigelshoven, a single mother living in Nakusp, has her two sons currently enrolled, which she says has given them the ability to start learning a trade.

“It was the best opportunity I could imagine,” Eigelshoven says. “Every morning they were totally enthusiastic.”

HUMOR IN THE WORKPLACESubmitted by the Counselling Department

This excerpt on “The Heart of Humor,” has been taken from Compassionate Laughter: Jest For Your Health, written by Patty Wooten, R.N. (2002). It is our first attempt to share the benefits of humor, resources, and tips for everyone to learn and enjoy.

Humor is a complex phenomenon that is an essential part of human nature. Throughout the ages, anthropologists have never found a culture of society that was devoid of humor. We humans begin to smile and laugh during the first few months of life. Even animals display signs of playfulness and humor during their developments. Unless our body, mind, or spirit is severely damaged, we will continue to laugh until the moment of our death.

On his death bed, American humorist Oscar Wilde, looked about his room and informed his friend, “This wall paper is awful. One of us has to go!”

TIP FOR THE CLASSROOM:

Over the summer you might want to keep your eyes open for humorous ‘things’ that you’d feel comfortable using in your class. For example, cartoons, funny quotes, YouTube clips or even little jokes that you think fit the subject theme.
