Letter from our Rector: Dear friends,

At this time of year life can get busier and busier and busier. School plays, Christmas parties, food and present shopping, writing cards and wrapping presents. Christmas seems to start earlier and earlier each year and get busier and busier (or maybe I'm just getting older).

In the church we get busier and busier - but I love it - Advent Carol Service, Carol Service, Crib Service, Christingle, Midnights, Christmas Day and not forgetting this year for the first time our Blue Christmas Carol Service (do see our advert on page 23).

Busy, busy, busy .... but can I encourage you this year to celebrate 'Christmas' and not '- - - - - mas'. By which I mean, make sure Christ is a part of your Christmas - I can guarantee you will feel better for it.

Remind yourself of the great news behind the celebrations - the news that Jesus Christ was born 2,000 years ago so that you may truly know God and live as the person that God made you to be.

I encourage you to join us for one of our Christmas services in any church you fancy (Anglican or Methodist) - join us to pause in the busyness to remember why and who we celebrate.

Jesus Christ was born for you - God came down to earth so that we might reach up to heaven.

I wish you a very festive Christmas period - and I pray that you may know this Christmas the true 'reason for the season'.

With my best wishes,

David

FREELAND PARISH COUNCIL As I type these notes the last Parish Council meeting was held on 16th October, and the next meeting is not until 20th November. So, here is a quick update on any planning applications or planning decisions received since the October meeting.

Planning Applications: All planning applications can be viewed on the WODC website at www.westoxon.gov.uk/planning . You can also contact the Planning Team at WODC on 01993 861420 and view the documents at Woodgreen Council Offices.

Applications Received: None.

Applications Approved: 17/02806/HHD CHERWELL COTTAGE, THE GREEN, FREELAND. Single storey rear extension for Ms Amy Jackson.

17/02891/HHD 109 BROADMARSH LANE, FREELAND. Single storey rear extension, convert existing garage into study, and construct new garage door to existing car port for Mr Glen Pascoe.

Applications Refused: None.

Appeal Lodged: 16/03948/OUT LAND WEST OF CHURCH ROAD, LONG HANBORO’ Residential development comprising 94 dwellings, including starter homes for Cantay Estates Ltd.

Other Planning As stated in last month’s Grapevine, a number of developers are putting forward plans to develop areas of Freeland, but as yet no formal applications have been made. Just to keep residents up to date, I can confirm that at the request of Spitfire Homes, a couple of Parish Councillors together with the Clerk met with members of Spitfire Homes for an informal discussion about their plans for the field opposite the Garden Centre, on the corner of Pigeon House Lane (the “Chapel Field”). An initial layout plan was shown for a development of up to approximately 80 homes, with 40% of these being affordable housing. There was also a small car park plus a village shop included within the plans, although these were not definite for the final plans. No planning application has yet been submitted, and Spitfire confirmed that they would be looking to hold a public exhibition with residents after Christmas with a view to then submitting a planning application.

Representatives from West Waddy (on behalf of Pye Homes) have also contacted the Parish Council to arrange an informal discussion regarding their plans to build up to 44 houses on the Pye owned field behind properties on Wroslyn Road. No meeting has yet taken place, so I don’t have any further details to give, and no formal application has been made to WODC. As soon as I hear anything further about these developments I will update you all. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contacting the Council & Date of Next Meeting: Next council meeting will be held on Monday 18th December 2017 at 7.30pm in the Newell Room. ************************************ LITTLE FREE LIBRARY NEWS Well, it’s that time of year again!

Throughout the last twelve months people have been donating all kinds of books to the Little Free Library, including Christmas books. I have been saving them all up, waiting for December…

So now that December is here, you can expect to find a variety of Christmas books, both for children and adults, appearing in the Little Free Library. Some of the children’s titles are listed below, but there are lots more!

Harry and the Dinosaurs make a Christmas Wish Mog’s Christmas by Judith Kerr The Girl Who Saved Christmas by Matt Haig Mr. Christmas by Roger Hargreaves

Did you know that in Iceland, books are given as presents on Christmas Eve? People then spend the evening reading. This tradition is called Jolabokaflo, which means Christmas Book Flood. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?

FREELAND CE PRIMARY SCHOOL

November 2017

This month we have continued with our topic ‘Out of Africa’. All of the children from years one to six visited Cotswold Wildlife Park and learnt about African animals. There were some fascinating facts shared with the children and the children enjoyed the experience immensely. While the rest of the school was out our Foundation Stage children enjoyed dressing up, looking at artefacts and books from Africa, an African drum workshop and to finish off had a non-stop tour of Africa, on their imaginary aeroplane.

It has been anti-bullying week and the children enjoyed some role play in assembly, where the staff acted out common scenarios e.g. chasing people, leaving someone out, boisterous play and name calling. We have taught the children a phrase that will be used in these situations: STOP, I don’t like it. There has been a poster competition and the winning posters are to be displayed around the school. It was great to have such a positive response from the children.

Please remember if you would like to visit the school on Friday 15th December from 2-5pm you can see the wonderful work that the children have been doing on Africa.

Best wishes, Sarah Nickelson Headteacher of Freeland CE Primary School School office: 01993 881707

********************************** FREELAND TEDDY GIRLS The Teddy Girls will be holding a Chocolate Tombola at the Christmas Tree Lighting Event at Freeland Hall on Friday 8th December at 6.30pm. Any donations of chocolate items will be gratefully received at 146 Wroslyn Road. All proceeds raised will go to the Freeland Garden of Remembrance.

Thank you

POPPY APPEAL 2017 Thank you for all donations generously made during the collection this year. As a village we raised a fantastic £1775.34

I would also like to thank all the volunteers who gave their time and support for the door to door collections, and everyone who allowed a static collection on their premises.

This year I would like to add a special thank you to Julie Hurst, Mavis Hale, Ian Hale and Harry Brown who have collected in the village for the last 30 years.

On behalf of the collectors we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Terms 1 and 2, 2017 It has been a period of ups and downs for the Pre-school. At the end of the summer term we said goodbye to our manager Jane Walker-Tudge and key worker Penny Burroughs. Both members of staff brought so much to our setting and will be sorely missed.

But, change is as good as a rest, so they say, and after a few months of searching we were lucky to find Jess Williams who started in October as our new manager. Jess is an experienced manager who has also spent time as an Ofsted Inspector which came in handy recently when we had an Ofsted inspection (unfortunately we cannot reveal our results yet!). She has settled in fantastically and it feels like she’s been with us for a long time already.

This term we are exploring the theme of ‘Let’s celebrate’. The children are looking at different celebrations and cultures, focussing on how and why we celebrate these. Christmas, of course, is a celebration that all the children are excited about! They will be very busy making decorations, cards and presents in addition to decorating their own tree. We are also very excited to join the church for our annual nativity service. To wrap up the term, we will also be having a Salt Box Christmas concert as well as welcoming a very special visitor, Ho Ho Ho!

We still have some spaces available for this academic year and we are also taking applications for September 2018. We take children from 2½ years old and offer 2 year old and 30 hours’ government funding. Open 8.45am - 3.15pm. Please contact the Pre-school for further details.

Everyone at Freeland Pre-school would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy Christmas!

Volunteering with us isn't just about campfires and helping girls get their next badge - although those are special moments that we all share. It's about empowering girls and giving them new experiences. It's being a role model and helping girls to realise their full potential. It's sharing and developing your own skills. The chance to do something for your community Meet new friends Take a refreshing break from your everyday routines Share a skill or specialist Make a difference in the lives of girls in your community Spend time laughing playing and being inspired by incredible girls and young

women

We could go on but space is limited, and at this moment we have a real need to share these opportunities with a new crop of volunteers, to ensure our groups can continue while offering support and training for you.

FREELAND GARDENING CLUB

We have now come to the end of another Club year, so on Monday 23rd October at 7.30pm in Freeland Hall, the Annual General Meeting took place. Jill, our Chairperson, was unfortunately unwell, so Terry Jones stood in for her and read Jill’s report. The Committee was voted in and the financial situation of the Club was presented. The programme of speakers and visits for the coming year was presented. The short meeting was followed by homemade cakes and refreshments. The Club photo albums were on show bringing back many happy memories of what we have shared together as a Club. New members and visitors are very welcome.

On 27th November at 7.30pm, also in Freeland Hall, the manager from Bridewell Organic Gardens, Ian Gourlay, is coming to tell us all about the excellent work done in the Gardens to help people with mental health problems. We have supported Bridewell for many years and some of us have visited on the Open Days. Bridewell also have vineyards producing good white and sparkling wines. Just recently all this year’s crop of grapes have been picked by many volunteers.

As usual there will be a Plant and Gardening Items Sale at the Hall meetings.

For any further information about Freeland Gardening Club please contact Ray and Jill Evans at 99 Wroslyn Rd tel. 881420 or email [email protected]

THE UNACCEPTED FREELAND RAMBLERS 1st October 2017 We were very fortunate this month with cold but sunny, dry weather and a rare visit from one of our founders, a Mr. P. P. Anting, who could hardly believe that after three years this foolhardy group of ramblers were still at it.

Mott Inc. were responsible for the logistics which saw us simultaneously traversing the east and west face of Doggers Hill, which naturally led to confusion, and our cameraman promptly quit. The hedgerows were still blooming with ivy, honeysuckle (old man’s beard) and new houses. New estates seem to be proliferating, we are told it is necessary although the ribbon development looks a bit worrying. There must be a plan to it all; please do tell me someone has an overall plan? At least we’ll be able to look back in years to come and say those immortal words, ‘I remember when it used to be all fields around here you know’.

Deidre still didn’t show up this month, we are all very concerned, but Julian did show us a fuzzy photo of someone nice. Mrs Trellis wants to purchase the Methodist Chapel for croquet or was it crochet lessons and has, again, written in to complain about a tree being planted in the playing field!

Our next ramble is from The Oxfordshire Yeoman, 9.30am on Sunday 3rd December, 2017. Newcomers are always very welcome.

THE BELLS ARE RINGING! It’s not Christmas yet and it’s not a Monday so why will the bells of St Mary’s be ringing out on Wednesday 13th December?

The answer is to demonstrate our support for the Christians of Syria and Iraq because this is the date when the Open Doors petition (currently standing at over 600,000 signatures) will be presented to the UK government two days after being presented to the General Secretary of the United Nations. This petition is asking for the Christians in Syria and Iraq to be given equal rights, the right of a dignified way of living and to be able to play their part in the rebuilding of their countries - rights that we take for granted but which they know, as Christians, will be denied them.

Karamles is a village 20 miles south east of Mosul in Iraq, about the same size as Freeland, with 797 houses all of which have been damaged with many completely burnt out or turned into rubble. But after three years of silence the bells of Karamles are ringing out once more.

On 14th August 2014 the so-called Islamic State claimed this predominantly Christian village as part of their caliphate. The only choice for the villagers was to flee, convert to Islam or be killed. Terrified, the whole community fled to Erbil in northern Iraq where they have been living in a camp for displaced people.

When IS fighters were driven out of Karamles, Father Thabet returned determined to make the church a centre of hope and encouragement, helping people to rebuild their homes and their lives. They raised a large cross and rang the church bells as a sign that Karamles is a Christian village and that, one day, the villages will all be able to return. Open Doors is supporting many returning families in Syria and Iraq as well as many others still in the camps or as refugees in neighbouring countries and is asking churches throughout the UK to ring their bells on Wednesday 13th December as a sign of solidarity and support.

As a way of commemorating the end of the First World War on 11th November 2018, the Craft Club are hoping to produce chains of knitted or crocheted or sewn poppies to decorate the memorial trees in Wroslyn Road for a couple of weeks either side of that date. Please bring the wool or your poppies to any Craft Group meeting or contact Helen or Margaret or any Club member. Thank you - in anticipation. We have made over 100 poppies so far BUT we will need to produce at least 600 poppies to decorate all the trees!!! And our new craft in November was making sock-snowmen for our Christmas decorations. Freeland FC First Team have been back with some good results, keeping them in a great position in the League table. Their first game saw them draw 2-2 away at a strong strong Heyford side. Goals from Simon Calley and Danny Taylor.

With what would seem a difficult away game in the Charity Cup against Mansfield Road the Reds managed a 4-1 win with goals from Tom Parker 3 and Tom McCudden with the other.

Following this great result, Freeland faced a very difficult Senior Cup tie away to high flying Easington, a great performance from the lads but walked away losing 2-1.

As injuries have started to hit the First team squad, in their latest game they managed to overcome a 2-1 victory against Launton. Both goals coming from Stuart Hole.

Freeland FC Reserves have had a good month, starting with a 7-1 win over Mansfield Road Reserves, goals from Ethan Simlett 2, Gomes 2, Liam Hare, Reece Dabreu and the strong veteran Tom Gerken coming off the bench to show the club that he has still got it! Deadly in front of goal!

The Reserves then won 2-0 against Charlgrove Reserves with goals from Jamie Collins and Liam Hare. (we believe this actually came off his belly but he still wants to claim it)

The latest game saw a very difficult cup game against Lusitanos which ended up going to extra time, not the greatest of oppositions and plenty of fouls going in on the young reserve side however they stood strong and walked away with a 3-1 victory. Goals from Ethan Simlett x 2 and Reece Dabreu 1

Freeland FC are looking to run a Christmas Golf Day to raise money for the club, this will be taking place at Witney Lakes Golf Club on Friday 29th December. Anyone is welcome to join, Please get in contact with Simon Hole or Matt Longford if you wish to come along.

Paul Salter - Freeland FC Chairman

1st HANBOROUGH FREELAND SCOUT GROUP So, what have we all been up to during the last month or so?

The whole group participated in the Remembrance Day parade, walking from Long Hanborough to Church Hanborough, and we had a fundraising Race Night event at the Yeoman pub in Freeland, thank you for all your support.

Beavers have had fun playing games together and earning badges by building bug houses and cooking pizza.

Cubs visited a pet shop to learn about caring for animals, and have been working hard to get more badges.

Scouts survived camping outside during Hurricane Brian, and also went away to Cranham Camp Centre in Gloucestershire, where they enjoyed loads of different activities.

Explorers are focused on achieving their Duke of Edinburgh and Chief Scout Platinum awards. We wish them all the best of luck.

Behind the scenes we have been working hard to set up a website for our group. We’ll let you know when it is up and running. Watch this space!

Thank you very much to our hardworking leaders, volunteers and executive committee members, we couldn’t do any of these activities without you.

Matthew Ruddle (Publicity Rep)

*********************************** FREELAND WOMEN’S INSTITUTE We were joined by Karen Howes at our November meeting. Karen is skilled at card making, and we were delighted that she spent the evening sharing tips and techniques with us. We all went home having made two beautiful Christmas cards, and a favours basket (complete with sweets). It was a fun and rewarding evening, and we enjoyed learning and practising a new hobby.

We had a short discussion about our potential programme for 2018. We already have a number of interesting speakers lined up, along with practical craft sessions (including bulb planting and Christmas wreath making) and a summer afternoon excursion. Do feel free to come along to any of our meetings, if you are thinking about joining our friendly W.I. group. We welcome women of any age.

Next month we will be holding our Christmas party on Monday 11th December. It promises to be a great social evening, with a lovely buffet supper.

Freeland WI normally meets on the second Monday of the month in the Village Hall, starting at 8pm and finishing around 10pm. We welcome visitors and new members. Further information is available on our website http://freelandwi.weebly.com/ , on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/freelandwi or contact Lorraine Pengilley 01993 881129.
