The first time I spoke with her over the phone, I immediately liked her. By the time we hung up from that first conversation, I felt like she was an old friend. Julie was still in Michigan at that point, but the South was calling her! She had family in Raleigh, so she was already thinking about moving. She had gone back to college as an adult, majored in Exercise Science, and when she saw our job posted online she made that first phone call. Julie’s first day as Fitness Program Coordinator with Granville County Senior Services was September 8, 1998. She immediately fit in….just like an old comfortable shoe. Yes….Julie Brockman was quite the find for us; like a sparkling gem. She always has a smile on her face. She knows the right things to say, and she knows how to motivate those around her. She is a natural born cheerleader. She totally understands the “big picture” of running a department like ours and I have always been able to count on her to help come up with ideas for programs and events that will be in the overall best interest of the department. She is the least “self- serving” individual I have ever known. She is an instigator of new projects and is always willing to step up to the plate to either lead or follow…..whatever we need is what she is happy to do. To say Julie will be missed is an understatement of great magnitude. The seniors who participate in her classes will miss her for sure; but the entire department will sparkle less and we will miss her “can do” attitude. There will be a void that will be felt by each of us. Her wisdom is perhaps what I personally will miss the most. She has been a great friend and confidant. HAPPY RETIREMENT JULIE! ONELASTWORD with Julie

Dear Friends,These last twenty years have been filled with joy, sorrow, challenge, laughter, sweat, hugs and of course love. I came to Oxford and Granville County as a stranger with a new opportunity to make a difference in peoples’ lives. I think I have accomplished that goal. I am leaving not as a stranger but as a friend to so many people. It has been my privilege to help and be helped and inspired by my coworkers and the many people who have attended my classes.

I am not gone for good! My husband and I plan on traveling and visiting with our grandchildren and family and now I get to play with you and participate in many of the activities that our Senior Center has to offer.

My wish for all of us is that we grow old with joy, good health and celebrate each other and each precious breath!

Love ,Julie

DOES YOUR SMARTPHONE MAKE YOU FEEL NOT SO SMART?

Whether we like them or not, cell phones have become as much a part of us as our clothing! Just about everyone around has a cell phone now. Many children are getting them for their aging parents so that it’s easier to keep in touch and to make sure they’re okay. But unfortunately, because technology changes so fast, it’s harder for seniors to keep up and learn how to really use their “smartphones.” We all know that teenagers are the best source of information when it comes to today’s technology. Many of us have to go to our children or grandchildren to show us how to do something on our phones or computers. So who better to teach our seniors how to use their phones than a teenager! Erin Bostic, a senior at J.F. Webb School of Health and Life Sciences, will continue our popular smartphone classes at the Granville County Senior Center in Oxford this fall. Erin will be showing our seniors everything their phones can do for them. She can show you how to text, take pictures, search the Internet, use social media sites, locate gadgets like a flashlight, calculator, alarm, calendar, etc & other requests like downloading music, editing pictures and more! Don’t let that smartphone out smart you anymore! Many thanks to Emily Wright, Grace Roberts and Gracie Ellington, all seniors at South Granville High School in Creedmoor and Ashton Williams, a senior at J.F. Webb School of Health and Life Sciences, for holding this class for us over the summer. Please note the time change for this class – with the new school semester, Erin will be available from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. the second and third Tuesdays of each month thru December (September 11th & 18th; October 9th & 16th; November 13th & 20th; December 11th & 18th). Due to school activities that schedule can possibly change so please call to confirm class will be held on that day! We are very excited Erin wants to continue these sessions at the center and we look forward to this intergenerational partnership! Please register by calling the center at (919)693-1930 or by signing up at the front desk so that we know how many to expect each session. Bring those phones or tablets and your questions and join in the fun!

HOLIDAY BAZAAR SCHEDULED

The Granville County Senior Center in Oxford will hold our ninth annual Holiday Bazaar on Saturday, November 3rd from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. If you are interested in being a vendor please call Diane Williams at (919)693-1930. There is an application you will need to complete. Booth rental will be $25.00 - $30.00. Cost will be dependent on where you are located in the building. Vendors are asked to donate a raffle prize. We encourage local crafts people to join us and showcase their handmade goods. Mark your calendars now!

COFFEE WITH KATHY Join us at the North Granville Senior Center in Stovall for Coffee with Kathy. This program will be held on Wednesday, September 5 beginning at 11:30 a.m. Kathy May, Senior Services Director, visits one of our three senior centers each month to talk with interested persons about our services or answer any questions you may have. This program is held the first Wednesday of each month and rotates between our three senior centers. This is a great way to get the information you want or need about our programs or any aging issue. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend.

CHECK OUT THESE UPCOMING SPEAKERS Senior Services tries very hard to keep our seniors informed and up-to-date with the latest information on aging, community resources, health and well-being and other types of news that affects our participants. Check out these programs coming up at the South Granville Senior Center in Creedmoor. On Friday, September 14th, Robin Edwards, with Granville County Emergency Management, will be at the center to present a program on “Disaster Preparedness.” This program will begin at 10:30 a.m. Even though we are headed into the Fall season, that doesn’t mean we are out of the woods yet for major storms. Hurricane season actually runs from June 1 through November 30. We tend to think of hurricanes as something only the coast needs to worry about. But most remember Hurricanes Fran and Floyd and the damage they caused our area. Most probably remember the tornadoes that touched down in Oxford a few years ago that caused tremendous damage. Even the winter months can bring major snow and ice storms. Are you ready for the next big storm? Ms. Edwards will give us tips to be ready. She will discuss family emergency plans, what you need in your home emergency kits and where to keep those kits so they can be easily accessed. Join us to get the information you need to be ready. On Friday, September 21st, the South Granville center will hold their first “Food and Facts” session beginning at 10:30 a.m. The topic will be “Fall Prevention.” The speaker will be Nori Wilson, Occupational Therapist with Maria Parham Hospital. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), each year one in every three adults ages 65 or older falls and 2 million are treated in emergency departments for fall-related injuries. And the risk of falling increases with each decade of life. The long-term consequences of fall injuries, such as hip fractures and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), can impact the health and independence of older adults. However, falls are not an inevitable part of aging. In fact, many falls can be prevented. Join us as we learn more about fall risk factors, lower body weakness and poor vision, difficulties with gait and balance, problems with feet and shoes, how certain medications can increase your fall risk, home hazards and more! You must preregister for this program, as lunch will be provided by Treyburn Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Please call the center at (919)528-0848 to register. In October we will hold an Estate Planning workshop. Greg McIntyre, J.D., M.B.A., will be at the center to talk with interested persons about what is a lady bird deed? What is the most important document you can have? How do I skip the probate process? What percentage of seniors need some type of long term care? This will be held on Monday, October 8th beginning at 10:30 a.m. You must also pre-register for this session as lunch will be provided. Please call the center at (919)528-0848 to register. Our monthly podcast sessions are cancelled for September and October but will resume in November. Join us!
