When the form of this world has passed away, those who have welcomed God into their lives and have sincerely opened themselves to His love, at least at the moment of death, will enjoy that fullness of communion with God which is the goal of human life. As the Church teaches, this perfect life with the Most Holy Trinity, this communion of life and love with with the Virgin Mary, the angels and all the blessed, is called “heaven”. Heaven is the ultimate end and fulfilment of the deepest human longings, the state of supreme, definitive happiness. For those who reject God in this life by their apathy or their hatred will bear the consequence of their abandonment of the Church and suffer the torments of hell. God is the infinitely good and merciful Father. But man, called to respond to Him freely, can choose to reject His love and forgiveness once and for all, separating himself for ever from communion with Him. It is not a punishment imposed externally by God but a development of premises already set by people in this life. God desires our salvation and grants us every chance for eternal life. But it is we, by our lives, who make the choice for Him or against Him. There is nothing else (Matthew 12:30).

teaches, this perfect life with the Most Holy Trinity, this communion of life and love with with the Virgin Mary, the angels and all the blessed, is called “heaven”.

PURGATORY

For the great majority of people—we may suppose—there remains in the depths of their being an ultimate interior openness to truth, to love, to God. In the concrete choices of life, however, it is covered over by ever new compromises with evil—much filth covers purity, but the thirst for purity remains and it still constantly re-emerges from all that is base and remains present in the soul. What happens to such individuals when they appear before the Judge? Will all the impurity they have amassed through life suddenly cease to matter? What else might occur? Saint Paul, in his First Letter to the Corinthians, gives us an idea of the differing impact of God's judgement according to each person's particular circumstances… Paul begins by saying that Christian life is built upon a common foundation: Jesus Christ. This foundation endures. If we have stood firm on this foundation and built our life upon it, we know that it cannot be taken away from us even in death. Then Paul continues: “Now if any one builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—each man's work will become manifest; for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire” (1 Cor 3:12-15).

— Pope Benedict XVI, “Spe Salvi”, n. 46

Hell is Real

1033: We cannot be united with God unless we freely choose to love him. But we cannot love God if we sin gravely against him, against our neighbour or against ourselves: “He who does not love remains in death. Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” Our Lord warns us that we shall be separated from him if we fail to meet the serious needs of the poor and the little ones who are his brethren. To die in mortal sin without repenting and accepting God ' s merc i fu l love means remaining separated from him for ever by our own free choice. This state of definitive self-exclusion from communion with God and the blessed is called “hell.”

1035: The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, "eternal fire."The chief punishment of hell is eternal separation from God, in whom alone man can possess the life and happiness for which he was created and for which he longs.

SAINT JUDEPatron of Hope

St. Jude is well known as the Patron Saint of hope and lost causes. But did you know that he was one of the twelve Apostles? He is also known as Judas Thaddeus. He is the Patron Saint of lost causes due to the tradition that, because his name was similar to the traitor Judas Iscariot, few, if any faithful Christians prayed for his intervention, out of the mistaken belief that they would be praying to Judas Iscariot. As a result, St. Jude was little used, and so became eager to assist any who asked him, to the point of intervening in the most dire of circumstances. The Church also wanted to encourage veneration of this “forgotten" disciple. Therefore, the Church maintained that St. Jude would intervene in any lost cause to prove his saintliness and zeal for Christ, and thus St. Jude became the patron of lost causes.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world

now and forever. Sacred Heart of Jesus,

have mercy on me. St. Jude of Jesus,

pray for me.

HELL DOWN UNDER

Did you know that our English word “hell” comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “helian”, which means “to cover up”, and originally meant other things, like a grave? “Heaven”, on the other hand, as the word suggests, means a place or a thing that is “heaved up”—therefore some elevated place. The “heaven” where God dwells must be the uppermost place, just as the hell were the devil suffers must be the deepest hole and the most securely covered place. The old English word for “eyelids” was “helings” or little covers, and a person who covered a house with thatch was not called only a “thatcher” but a “helier”.

THE

CATHOLIC FOUNDATION The Diocese of Parramatta a n n o u n c e d l a s t y e a r t h e establishment of The Catholic Foundation, which replaced the Diocesan Works Fund , and expanded on its works. The Catholic Foundation needs to raise $2.5 million annually to sustain the works of the Church in Western Sydney and the Blue M o u n t a i n s — i n c l u d i n g t h e formation of our seminarians, providing Christian education in public schools, the empowering of our disabled with job training, supporting our deaf, and housing vulnerable single mothers facing homelessness. To achieve these g r e a t w o r k s , Th e C a t h o l i c Foundation proudly supports the H o l y S p i r i t S e m i n a r y, t h e Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, the Ephpheta Centre and Catholic Care. Donations of $2 or more to The Catholic Foundation are tax deductible. The Catholic Foundation will also manage The Catholic Fund, which will house gifts such as bequests and donations for special projects. Donations to this fund are not tax deductible. The Catholic Foundation aims to annually increase donations to further sustain, grow and expand the good works from our faithful in the

diocese—building faith, hope and charity across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. Fr iends o f The Catholic Foundation can heroically sustain our works of faith, hope and charity by choosing to donate a major gift or become a regular monthly donor, and become an Ambassador of Faith, Hope and Charity. If 1 in 3 people attending Mass today become bronze ambassadors, the diocese would secure the funds needed to continue and grow its good works. Each year the diocese mandates a quota for each parish in the diocese which it needs to raise for The Catholic Foundation. This financial year the quota for Holy Trinity Parish is $16,167 and the quota for Holy Family Parish is $10,510. An appeal is held three times a year to help the parish meet its quo ta and the d iocese has announced that the next appeal will be held in December. First Reading The Prophet Daniel (12:1-3)

‘At that time Michael will stand up, the great prince who mounts guard over your people. There is going to be a time of great distress, unparalleled since nations first came into existence. When that time comes, your own people will be spared, all those whose names are found written in the Book. Of those who lie sleeping in the dust of the earth many will awake, some to everlasting life, some to shame and everlasting disgrace. The learned will shine as brightly as the vault of heaven, and those who have instructed many in virtue, as bright as stars for all eternity.’

Responsorial Psalm (Ps 15:5, 8-11. ℟. v. 1)

℟. Keep me safe, O God: you are my hope.

O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup; it is you yourself who are my prize. I keep the Lord ever in my sight:

since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm. ℟.

And so my heart rejoices, my soul is glad; even my body shall rest in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead,

nor let your beloved know decay. ℟.

You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence,

at your right hand happiness forever. ℟.

Second Reading The Letter to the Hebrews (10:11-14, 18)

All the priests stand at their duties every day, offering over and over again the same sacrifices which are quite incapable of taking sins away. Christ, on the other hand,

has offered one single sacrifice for sins, and then taken his place for ever, at the right hand of God, where he is now waiting until his enemies are made into a footstool for him. By virtue of that one single offering, he has achieved the eternal perfection of all whom he is sanctifying. When all sins have been forgiven, there can be no more sin offerings.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia! Be watchful, and pray constantly, that you may be worthy to stand before the Son of Man. Alleluia!

Gospel The Gospel of Mark (13:24-32)

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘In those days, after the time of distress, the sun will be darkened, the moon will lose its brightness, the stars will come falling from heaven and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory; then too he will send the angels to gather his chosen from the four winds, from the ends of the world to the ends of heaven. ‘Take the fig tree as a parable: as soon as its twigs grow supple and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. So with you, when you see these things happening: know that he is near, at the very gates. I tell you solemnly, before this generation has passed away all these things will have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. ‘But as for that day or hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son; no one but the Father.’
