Dear Amber:
The preschool teaching staff are writing to inquire about your potential help in providing the funding we
need to purchase interactive projectors. We are looking to improve our teaching and curriculum by
incorporating 2-3 weekly STEM activities. Our first choice would be smart boards, but we believe
interactive projectors can help us meet this goal. Interactive projectors can be more easily stored in our
classroom. Our rooms will require no maintenance to make use of the projectors. We will be able to
project the image onto our wall chalkboard.
Red Creek ABCD serves to provide services to our local agricultural families. Many of the children
attending our school are Hispanic. Their parents work long, hard hours to make a life for their families.
They value education and want their children to grow up and pursue whatever career they would like to.
To help these families, we provide nutrition, health, transportation, disabilities, and family services. We
work with the community to improve our services. We would like to continue to improve, and we are
severely behind in our classroom technology.
Last April, Google donated 40 tablets to our preschool program. The children love the tablets. They ask to
play on them every day. We have seen academic improvement that we feel is partially due to the apps the
children are interacting with on the tablets. We know our children are digital natives. They do not have the
technology in their homes, so we try to incorporate technology into our teaching whenever appropriate.
We ask that you please consider us as we work to improve our education program. We thank you for any
consideration that you give us.
Sincerely,
Joanna Samar

HISTORY OF ORGANIZATION:
In 1946, Agri-Business Child Development first opened in Goshen, New York. The agency took over a migrant
school previously run by the Sisters of St. Dominican. Over time, the agency opened centers in top crop-producing
counties across New York state. Currently, thirteen centers are across the state. Though all children are welcome,
the centers seek to provide Head Start services to New York’s migrant families. Agri-Business Child Development
closed a center in Palermo and moved into Red Creek in the 1980s. The agency purchased the former elementary
school from the Red Creek school district. Red Creek ABCD opened its doors in 1988. From 1988 until 2000, the
center served school aged children from the months of June to November. Finally, in 2000, Red Creek ABCD
opened to a full-year program. Currently, children as young as eight weeks up through pre-kindergarten can be
enrolled in the year round program. During the summer months, Red Creek ABCD provides a summer program for
school aged children from Kindergarten through grade 6.

PROGRAM EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Our mission at Red Creek ABCD is to provide educational services to our families working in local agriculture. Many
of our children are Hispanic. Many of our families fall below the poverty level. They work long hours and live in
cramped apartments with little to no furniture. The parents do not let that deter them from doing their best to
provide for their families. When you enter our classroom, you’ll see children happily engaged in a circle time activity,
small group activity, or free play. When the weather is nice, we have a playground outside the front of the building.
On inclement weather days, the children can play in our gymnasium. The children are fascinated with technology.
They are most excited to use our Google tablets, eager to play on the computer, and they love to use the smart
board currently located in our music room. You’ll see the teachers engaged with the children, no matter activity is
taking place. Each classroom has a bilingual teaching aide who helps to promote each child’s home language while
they work on learning English.
Though generous funding from the state, Head Start, and other organizations, we are able to provide nutritional
services to these children. We provide breakfast, lunch, and snack to all of the children. The children receive a
balanced nutritional meal. We provide health services, including regular screenings, and dental care several times a
year. We contract with a local bus garage to transport to the children to and from school each day. We also have
screenings to determine if children need extra services such as speech, or physical therapy. We partner with the
community. Our pre-k class visits the local library each week. Finally, we work to promote the family. We have a
monthly parent night where we provide babysitting services for the children at the center while we find out from
the parents what their needs are. The teachers visit the families at home at least twice a year. Every week, each
classroom sends home an activity for the parents and student to complete together.
We are working to introduce STEM activities to our program. We try to include at least one STEM activity a week,
but we would like to include two to three more. We believe that having interactive projectors will help us to meet
this goal more easily. Some of the teacher’s daily preparation time could be eliminated if the daily calendar and
question of the day, letter of the day, etc could be created on the computer. The extra time could be used by
teachers to prepare activities that will introduce the students to STEM.
We use small groups daily to teach children assess their learning. Small groups allow us better scaffolding
opportunities and promote teamwork. Often the children work together to complete a task. Weekly children
observations are sent home to the parents and entered and scored on a computer system.
Program Time Frame: Year round Head-Start center
Requested Amount: $5,000
Overall Program Budget: $2,000
Other Funding Sources:
Monthly soda and candy fundraisers that yield approximately $150 a month to spend on center needs/wants

Do you ever think "there must be an easier way to do this?" Please describe times that you feel this way.
Changing diapers, but I don't think they've come up with the technology to help with
this year. ;)
I feel this way when overwhelmed with paperwork. No i think it would be cool if the
hv and PTC can be printed directly from info from TS gold. the reports would be
generated from the combo of weekly observations .
parents could get a print out of some of the actual observations .
Dealing with kids
There must be an easier way to get kids on the bus.
Daily planning!

It would be easier if we had Microsoft Word on the classroom computers. The
tablets we have are great for the children, but they often run very slow because
many people are connected to the internet at the same time.

How can technology make your job easier?
Technology makes my job easier because I can type letters and print multiple
copies. The children enjoy using computers and tablets. Typing is faster and neater
than my handwriting. I use the internet for activity idea .
Technology can simplify paperwork for me if we could get more of it to be electronic.
Less paperwork
Making copies for all the kids and being able to find things to do with the kids.
less hand writing.
Save time doing paperwork, help create things like crafts and teaching aids.
It is something many children show a interest in so you can get their attention with it
and it helps occupy them.
Make up for lost time
Give more ideas to make teaching more interesting
What technology would you like to see come to the center or to your classroom?
None in the classroom
GRANT PROPOSAL 11
I like the technology we have for our center. Maybe a smart board that was lined up
right.
Reliable internet chrome cast for the tablets! a smart board in my room! a larger
laminator! a die cut machine or cricket machine! Microsoft office on the computers
I would like to see a SMART board in my room. It would be useful for everyday
activities like calendar and reading stories from the eBook collections.
Smart board in the classroom
Better sound systems

classroom because thge y need
Word in order to be edited.
Not too sure how this works in a toddler room, I think this is a more appropriate
question for the pre-school classrooms. we have ebooks, but they are difficult for
the kids to navigate
FOR INFANT TEACHERS ONLY: What would you think of having a copier in your classroom?
that would make our lives so much easier!!!!!!!! Iy
would be helpful
FOR TODDLER TEACHERS ONLY: What would you think of having a Hatch children's computer in your classroom?
The children are to young they need to learn to communicate with each other first
and play together
I think the children are a bit too young for this for the most part. I think it's important
for them to interact and play with one another and the adults in the room, rather
than a computer at this stage.
How many days a week do you use the smart board with your class?

FOR PRESCHOOL TEACHERS ONLY: What would you think of having a smart board in your classroom?
GRANT PROPOSAL 13
I would love it. I would definitely use it more often if there were one in the room.
It would be helpful and used more often.
I think it would be a good idea Would
love it!!! Want one!!!
How many days a week do you use the tablets with your class?
0-1 1 11%
2-3 3 33%
4-5 2 22%
Not applicable 3 33%
FOR PRESCHOOL TEACHERS ONLY: What would you think of being able to store the tablets in your classroom?
I'd use them more! Or let the kids have more access to them since they have
learned how to turn them on and off. They would get in the way would save
time, be more convenient and might get used more.
I would use them more often if I did not have to go look for the key and then have to
go get the tablets from another room.
Do you think technology is important in early childhood education? Why or why not?
Yes to help the children start to learn how to use these type of things more but also
no because I feel like the world is relying to much on some of it!
Yes, the children need to know about technology that they will be expected to use
in school, so that they are not behind in this area. It can also be a wonderful tool in
terms of aiding in the things that a teacher does in the classroom.
Yes but only for children 4 and up
GRANT PROPOSAL 14
Yes, it is used every where, every day. It gives them an advantage to future use and
learning.
Yes because technology evolves and by the time They go to school something new
will be out but they will be ok because they know how to use it.
technology is the future. its that simple. a lot of our families may not have the
technology in their homes. It is crucial the kids have access to it at school.
Yes it keeps us up to date ob the latest technology
Yes because children are being exposed to it. I think they can be taught in ECE how
to care for technology.
Yes it is important because technology grows so rapidly that the children in the
center need to know how to use the technology we have to learn new technology in
the future.
Would you like to learn more about technology in early childhood education?
