1 SKCG AUTO COLLEGE, PARALAKHEMUNDI
The College – A Brief History
Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Autonomous College, Paralakhemundi was founded in 1896
under the kind patronage of Shri Goura Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deo, the Raja of Paralakhemundi.
The same year it obtained affiliation as a second grade college from the Madras University. The
continuous efforts of Maharaja Sri Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deo finally saw the college
upgraded to the status of a first grade college in 1936.
Originally affiliated to Madras University, the college had the Honour of being one of the first five
affiliated colleges with which the Utkal University started functioning in November 1943. On 2nd January,
1967 the Berhampur University came into being and since then the college has been affiliated to it. After
up-gradation of Ravenshaw College into A University this College has been enjoying the reputation of
being the oldest Govt. College in the State. On 11th July 1947 the college was taken over by the Government of Odisha and named after Sri
Krushna Chandra Gajapati. Towards the end of 1948, the college was shifted from its old building to the
Morrison extension (named after Mr. Cameran Morrison, Tutor of the Maharaja) in which it is housed
today. The college campus today boasts of the original two-storeyed science and administrative block
duly extended with the addition of the Controller of Examination Section, extension of the main building,
a two storeyed block for the humanities a library block with an auditorium in the first floor, an open air
stage, Geography Department, a new block with computer science laboratory and class rooms, a cycle
stand, a canteen, the Mission Bungalow which houses the Commerce Department, the P.G.
Departments of Odia and IGNOU study centre. A three storey building comprising twelve new lecture
theatres and two seminar halls is being constructed.
The college also attained the distinction of being one of the first lead colleges of Odisha in 1990. The
Government of India released a commemorative Rs. 1/- Postage Stamp and a First Day Cover in May
1996 in commemoration of the hundredth year of establishment of the college. The college celebrated
its centenary function on 10, 11, and 12th January 2001 amidst the present and past students and staff
and in the gracious presence of His Excellency, the Governor of Odisha, Honourable Chief Minister,
Honourable Speaker and several other distinguished guests.

11.Academic and Co-curricular Activities
(a) Gajapati Memorial LecturesThe objectives of Gajapati Memorial Lectures, which have been annually organized for the
last twenty years, is to widen the academic as well as the intellectual horizon of our students byintroducing them to diverse concepts and fields of study through the learned eruditedeliberations of the invited prominent figures which is made further useful through a structuredand intense question-answer-interactive session.
The uniqueness of Gajapati Memorial Lectures is its very naming after Sri. Krushna ChandraGajapati, the founder of Odisha as a separate state. The visions and aspirations of thisenlightened king inspire one and all. The social and educational backwardness of this tribaldominated district can only be removed by greater awareness of the student community aboutrecent developments. The fund allocated for the seminar is small. But the organizers havealways roped in important scholars in science, literature and culture for the talks.
Paralakhemundi is a remote border area of Odisha. Students are cut off from the mainstream of the educational and cultural life of Odisha and India at large. The Gajapati memoriallecturers were conceived of to remove this disadvantage of our students and make them awareof the recent development in all areas of study. The talks are all published in the form of booksand widely circulated among the students, nearby educational institutions and leading

intellectuals of this area. The opinion collected through questionnaires is highly satisfying andhave encouraged the college authorities to continue the tradition.
