TEMPLE GRANDIN Large Auditorium 1st Session & 5th Session: Class #101 or #501 Temple Grandin says having autism led her to where she is today — a world‐renowned expert on cattle handling. “I’m a visual thinker,” she said. That leads her to focus on important things others might miss, such as, “What are the animals looking at?” Grandin said. Although cattle tend to prefer going from dark spaces into light ones, they balk at suddenly going into bright sunlight, according to Grandin, who has designed the facilities in which half the cattle in the United States are handled. Grandin, 71, a professor of animal science at Colorado State University, was diagnosed with autism at a young age. “I’m an extreme visual thinker,” Grandin said. “So I would get down in the chutes and I can see what the cattle are seeing.” Grandin uses examples to highlight how natural livestock behavior can be used to a producer’s advantage. Grandin said. “Stockmanship matters. People who care about animals have more productive livestock.” Grandin thinks in pictures and says livestock are similar. Through good stockmanship, livestock can be trained to recognize “pictures,” or situa‐ tions, and remember what to do with each picture. The goal of stockmanship is to keep animals calm and healthy, which leads to better production. “I don’t want them hot; don’t want them lame; and don’t want them roughed up,” Grandin said. “It’s just that simple.”
