fis futurs

Simon Fafard, Azastra Inc.

lenges

In this presentation, I will review the recent developments in the field of Concentrated Photovoltaic

(CPV). The CPV cell suppliers are delivering cell efficiencies over 40% in production with hero re-

sults in the 44%. The CPV module manufacturers are delivering modules over 30% efficiency in pro-

duction and announced impressive record efficiencies, for example: Amonix 36.2%, Soitec 31.8%,

and Semprius 32.9%. The CPV industry is poised for a fast growth. From a recent market analysis

from GlobalData Report, the CPV market is expected to reach an annual capacity exceeding 500

MW/year by 2017 and an installed capacity of 4.7 GW by 2020. With a targeted module cost of

around $0.5/W and with the CPV cell being the engine of the CPV module, I will discuss some of the

challenges and opportunities in this field. This conference will be given in English.

lanine.

Cette conférence sera donnée en anglais.

Eumelanin: from photoprotection to bioelectronics

The ubiquitous natural pigment eumelanin is widely studied for its photoprotective, thermoregulating,

free-radical scavenging, and anti-oxidant functions in the human body. In the past five years, the stu-

dy of melanins has been a subject of intense interest at the interdisciplinary level. Synergy with diffe-

rent research communities is important for the realization of fully bio-compatible devices and the ad-

vancement of knowledge on the roles and functions of melanins. In this talk, we will discuss the

growth of eumelanin films and their charge transport, with ion-blocking and non-blocking (proton-

transparent) electrodes, in humidity-controlled conditions. We propose possible biomedical and tech-

nological applications as inspired by eumelanin physicochemical properties.

This conference will be given in English.

New Developments in THz Science and Technology

The THz region of the electromagnetic spectrum (0.3 – 10 THz) has historically been terra inco-

gnita, due to lack of efficient sources beyond blackbody emission and poor detectors often swam-

ped by the thermal background. This situation has definitely changed over the past 25 years, when

the first “THz pulse” generated by a femtosecond laser was achieved. Our ability to efficiently

generate, detect and control THz light has grown by leaps and bounds since then, and interesting

applications that use its ability to pass through non-conducting and non-polar materials are star-

ting to become mainstream. This talk will highlight several new methods for the generation and

detection of 1) extremely broadband THz light pulses and 2) extremely intense THz light pulses,

and focus on how we can use these new tools to probe and even coherently drive charged excita-

tions relevant to next generation photovoltaics.

This conference will be given in English.

Garry Rumbles, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

The Science and Future Directions of Organic Photovoltaic Solar Cells

The past 25 years have seen a flurry of research activity in the development of organic photovoltaic (OPV)

solar cells, with solar power conversion efficiencies increasing from just a few percent to now exceeding 10%.

Over the same time period, many OPV-related companies have come and gone and now is a good time to take

stock of the situation. This presentation will present a brief overview of this 25-year pathway, exploring what

we have learned, what we still struggle to understand, and how can we progress further.

In addition, we will investigate some key scientific questions that remain in the field of OPV solar cells, such

as: how do charges get generated, where are they generated, and how do they successfully emerge from devi-

ces? Specifically, this presentation will focus on the use of the novel spectroscopic technique of time-resolved

microwave conductivity (TRMC) to investigate the production and loss of free, mobile charges in a number of

organic systems that are often found in OPV devices.

These systems are comprised of light-harvesting conjugated polymers blended, or mixed, with a variety of high

electron affinity acceptor molecules, such as novel, substituted fullerenes and phthalocyanines. We will explore

the role of the solid-state microstructure of the polymer, the energetics of the acceptor molecules, and where

these molecules might reside within the polymer microstructure. To break slightly with tradition from the OPV

field, a molecular or chemical approach of a Marcus formulation will be used to explain the fundamental,

charge-generating process.

This conference will be given in English.
