Board to Meet Wednesday Admissions, enrollment, and

endowment reports will be on the agenda when the Grand Valley Board of Control meets on Wednesday, December 14 . The meeting will be held at 11 a.m. in Kirkhof Center. Other agenda items include reports on WGVC's Kalamazoo translator project, the River Ridge development, and the Grand Rapids Center.

l«iYC to Show Open Heart surgery "West Michigan Journal," WGVC­

TV's weekly magazine program, will devote this week's half­hour show to an open heart surgery videotaped at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. The special edition of Channel 35's locally-pr.educed series will air on Friday, December 16, at 9 p.m. with a repeat broadcast on Saturday, December 17, at 3 p.m.

Grand Rapids surgeon Dr. Mohamnad Riahi performed the aortic valve· replacement on a 60-year-old west Michigan woman. Riahi will explain the procedure to viewers and discuss the technology and training required for the operation. The program also includes an interview with the patient during her recovery.

offerings such as 'Lifeline ' and 'The Operation ' in helping to dispel fears connected with the prospect of surgery," Pegg Carroll, host for the series, said. "Although graphic in nature, the program presents an informative view of this type of surgery and provides a valuable insight into the medical advancements made in west Michigan." Stress Workshop to be Offered For COT Staff

The Personnel Office will sponsor a workshop exclusively for Clerical, Office and Technical staff on January 5. The workshop, "Taking Charge of Your Life," deals with the stress of juggling home, work, and personal demands.

Dean of Students Linda Johnson will lead the three-hour workshop, which will be held at 1 p.m. in Kirkhof Center.

COTs interested in attending are asked to contact their unit heads. Participation is limited and will be based on supervisors' recomnendations. Staff members will be notified of their status the week of December 18 .

Questions about the workshop should be directed to Debra Stormzand, Personnel Office, ext. 3215.

SHAPE Program Begins January 11

The winter session of the SHAPE fitness program will begin January 11. "Si nee there were a number of faculty and staff on a waiting list, only a few slots are available for the coming session," according to Debra Stormzand, personnel assistant.

Enrollment in the program is based on the academic participation policy covering the various employee groups and on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants must be willing and able to attend exercise sessions faithfully every Monday , Wednesday, and Friday from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The winter session schedule includes pre-fitness evaluations January 11-13; program participation Janua ry 16-Apri l 6; and post-exercise evaluations April 4-6.

Because of the winter semester book rush, the Main Deck Bookstore will not fill inter­departmental charge orders from January 11-20 .

Flu Shots Available The Med+Center i n the Field

House is offering flu shots at a cost of $10 per person. The shots are ava i lable on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

Art Department Sponsors High School Workshops

More than 100 high school students visited the Grand Valley campus recently to participate in six workshops offered by the Art Department. Workshop topics i ncluded Ceramics, Drawing , Graphic and Inter i or Des i gn, J ewelry, Printmaking, and Sculpture. The students also had the opportunity to tour Grand Valley's art studios and the campus.

The Art Department also co­sponsored with Calvin College a recent visit to the GVSC campus by Barbara Tiso, a painter, potter, and sculptor from New York. Tiso presented two workshops and a public lecture on hand-built and cheesecloth structures using various forms of clay.

Tax Reductions Slated For January

The first of three scheduled pennanent reductions in Michigan's state income tax will become effective on January 1, 1984, according to State Treasurer Robert A. Bowman. The tax rate for 1984 will be reduced to 6.1 percent, which represents 35 percent of the withholding increased earlier this year.

A second mandated reduction, to 5. 35 percent, is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 1985, and still another reduction of .25 percent no later than September 30, 1986. Additional cuts will be made as the state's unemployment declines and the rate will equal the 1975-81 level of 4.6 percent once the employment rate drops to 9 percent, according to Bowman.

Chess Tourna11ent to be Held On Campus

A chess championship tournament open to all interested players will be held on campus on January 21. Co-sponsors of the tournament are the Michigan Chess Association, and GVSC's Student Activities Office and Mathematics and Computer Science Department.

FACULTY AND STAFF SKETCHES Theodore Berland, associate

professor of corrmunications, was awarded a plaque for his service as president of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) at the association's recent annual conference in Philadelphia. Berland also gave a workshop on "Marketing Your Manuscript," led a networking session on "Asserting Yourself as a Writer," and served as a judge for the AMWA/SEARLE Journalism Awards in Cardiology.

Antonio Herrera, associa.te professor in the School of Education, was the speaker for the 30th Annual Conference on Health Care and Financial Management, held recently at the University of Michigan. Herrera spoke on "Time Management, Profits, and Performance." Herrera is the author of an article on "Basic Facts on Time Management," published in the July-August 1983 issue of Time Talk, an international -­newsletter on time management.

Paul Huizenga, associate professor of biology, presented a paper entitled "Surrogate Motherhood: A Bioethical and Legal Mine Field" at the October convention of the National Association of Biology Teachers, held in Philadelphia .

Political Science Professor R. S. Junn served as a discussant on a panel on "Testing Balance of Power Theories," at the Midwest

Regional Conference of the International Studies Association, held recently in East Lansing.

Donna Larson, associate professor of nursing, presented an address on "Computer-Assisted Instruction in Nursing Education" during the recent annual meeting of. the Southern Region Collegiate Education for Nursing Council. The meeting, held in Atlanta, was attended by 225 deans and directors of collegiate nursing programs f rom the fourteen states in the southern region of the council.

William Redding, associ ate professor of biology, presen t ed a talk on "Gardening With Perennials" at a recent meeting of the Lowell Showboat Club.

Gary Richmond, associate professor of chemistry, and senior chemistry major Frank Fisher presented their research on "The Reaction of Lithium Dialkyl Cuprates with N-Chloroamines" at the fall scientific meeting sponsored by Dow Chemical and the Midland section of the American Chemical Society.

Biology Professor Howard Stein has been named president of the Michigan Association of Biology Teachers for 1983-84. Stein has also been appointed to the long­range planning corrmittee of the Michigan Science Teacher's Association; he is a member of the MSTA board.
