Grand Orient Freemasonry is a continuation of the cosmopolitan Masonic ideas and traditions ofMasons such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and the Marquis de Lafayette. OurMasonic lineage can be traced back through the Grand Orient of Franceand to the original andPremier Grand Lodge of England that was established in 1717. These traditions and ideas are atthe very core of the Age of Enlightenment thinking that eventually resulted in the freedomsenjoyed by every American today.

The Grand Orient of the United States promotes education of any topic that pertains to its keyprinciples and values, which include but are not limited to Masonic history and symbolism, theAge of Enlightenment, science, natural philosophy, ethics, secular humanism, the environment, logic, and mathematics.

Above all, the Grand Orient of the United States defends the principle of total freedom ofconscience in matters of religion and spirituality. This implies freedom of the mind and liberationin regard to all dogmas; the right to believe or not to believe in the existence of God, a SupremeBeing, or any form of deity; and autonomy of thought concerning religious, political, andeconomical constraints.

Moreover, as a secular Masonic order, the Grand Orient of the United States does not require itsmembers to subscribe to any religious, theological, metaphysical, or political ideologies; nor shall

any lodge in the Grand Orient specifically align itself to or operate in accordance to any of theseideologies.

By the oldest definition Free-Masonry is a peculiar(unique) system of morality veiled in allegory andillustrated with symbols. It is built upon the principlesof Natural Philosophy and promotes progressivescientific inquiry as the rational approach toadvancing human understanding.

By the end of the seventeenth century reason hadreplaced superstition as the framework of humanknowledge and understanding. The result was a newage of human enlightenment and freedom that wouldwitness the end of theocracy and monarchy

throughout most of the western world. Masonic lodges were at the core of this new cosmopolitan

movement and provided safe havens for free thinkers such as Benjamin Franklin and Voltaire.

The Grand Orient of the United States of America is an active agent in preserving the rights andfreedoms of all people. Through the promotion of freedom of conscience and the principles of theGrand Orient of the United States of America, we carry the spirit of the Age of Enlightenmentforward for future generations.

The Grand Orient actively promotes the development of new Lodges in both the United Statesand Canada. There is also a program for Lodges wishing to transfer from the Anglo-Americansystem to the Grand Orient.

Master Masons have the option to form Triangles, Study Groups, and Research Lodges.Triangles are intended for small local groups of three to seven members. This is ideal for groupsliving a long distance from a fully Chartered Lodge. They can be members of the Lodge whilealso having local meetings. As Triangles grow they have the option to become fully functioningLodges.

New Lodges can be formed by seven or more Master Masons. The Grand Orient provides each

new lodge with all the documentation necessary, including access to fraternal supplies.

Anglo-American Lodges wishing to affiliate with the Grand Orient can do so by going through thepetitioning process for a Charter. An educational curriculum has been developed to help with thetransition process.

Research Lodges and Study Circles can be created to foster a better understanding ofFreemasonry. These are open to Masons, scholars and the general public.

Q: Do you have to believe in God to be a Free-Mason in the Grand Orient?

A: No. The Grand Orient believes in and promotes freedom of conscience for all people. Free-Masonry is not a religion but a system of Natural Philosophy that is religion neutral. The atheist,Christian, Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, and others are all equally welcome in our lodges.

Q: Is the discussion of religion or politics forbidden?

A: No. Free-Masonry is dedicated to furthering human understanding in all areas of knowledge. The only time that such a discussion would be disallowed is in the form of sectarian disseminationwith the intent to proselytize.

Q: What rituals do Grand Orient lodges use?

A: Each lodge is free to choose the ritual that best suits the needs of its members. At the presenttime, we are offering the Traditional Cosmopolitan, Scottish Rite, Modern Rite, AmericanPreston/Webb, and English Emulation.

Q: Does the Grand Orient prohibit the consumption of alcohol at lodge functions?

A: No. As Free-Masons, we are taught to temper our passions and not to drink to excess. EachLodge may choose whether or not to allow alcohol on the premises.

Q: Does the Grand Orient claim exclusive Masonic territorial jurisdiction over all of the USA?

A: No. This question is often asked because of a fundamental difference between Anglo-

American Freemasonry and Traditional Cosmopolitan Free-Masonry. We believe that other formsof Masonry can coexist with us in the same territory; for example, the mixed-gender and feminineobediences.

Lodges of the Grand Orient typically do grow to more than 30 members on average, after whichanother lodge ("triangle") will begin to form. This limitation allows the lodge to operate efficiently

and maintain fraternal intimacy among its brethren. Additionally, once a lodge reaches itsthreshold of membership, it then has more time evolve, advance, and become more proactivelyinvolved in the community.
