Grand Music Gracious Word Sing For Joy® is a production of St. Olaf College. by Pastor Bruce Benson, host I f you look up the etymology of the English word chorus or choir, you will be in- formed that it comes from the Latin chorus which comes from the older Greek word χορός or χῶρος (choros.) The Greek word originally applied to a circle dance or singing dance in a circle. That makes sense. Even for a choir of singers who have been instructed (as I was as a youth,) “Don’t move anything except your mouth!” the act of sing- ing together is really a kind of dance. The voices must learn to dance with each other. No stepping on anyone else’s musical toes; let your movements complement each other. But there is an alternate etymology as well. No less an authority than Plato (Book 2 of Plato’s Laws) suggests that an older Greek word lies behind χορός: the word χαρά (chara), which is the Greek word for joy or cheerfulness. The root of choral singing is joy! No wonder we call our program Sing For Joy. If Plato is right, there are two possibilities for the future of choral singing, including choral singing in the church. 1) It will never go away; surely anything that springs up out of joy, and then adds joy will prevail in human community. Or 2) human community will fall into such joyless living that choral singing will be regarded as either frivolous or unwelcome. One can never predict the turns and tumbles of human society, and we can all name at least a hundred reasons not to be joyful. But I think it is safe to say that as long as the Biblical message of grace, love, dignity, forgiveness is proclaimed among people there will be joy, and where there is joy (if Plato is right!) there will very likely be choruses. Therefore, at least in the church, option 1) above seems far more likely. This is not to say that we can simply take the future of the church choir for granted; we cannot. But it is to say that every assembly of people gathered around the Gospel will feel a tug not just to listen to a chorus but to be a chorus. Joy wants to sing. Joy wants to be a chorus. The notion of church musicians like my colleagues, John Ferguson and Paul Westermeyer, and others like them, that the primary function of a church musician is to enable the congregation’s song is right on target. The impulse to sing together comes naturally, but the actual doing of it takes effort and leadership. The Gospel gives more than enough reason to sing, we just need good musicians to help us do it. May they abound. Peace be with you, JULY 2012 / YEAR B

Sing For Joy is a production of St. Olaf College.

    by Pastor Bruce Benson, host

If you look up the etymology of the English word chorus or choir, you will be in-formed that it comes from the Latin chorus which comes from the older Greek word or (choros.) The Greek word originally applied to a circle dance or singing dance in a circle. That makes sense. Even for a choir of singers who have been instructed (as I was as a youth,) Dont move anything except your mouth! the act of sing-ing together is really a kind of dance. The voices must learn to dance with each other. No stepping on anyone elses musical toes; let your movements complement each other.

But there is an alternate etymology as well. No less an authority than Plato (Book 2 of Platos Laws) suggests that an older Greek word lies behind : the word (chara), which is the Greek word for joy or cheerfulness.

One can never predict

the turns and tumbles of human society, and we can all name at least a hundred reasons not to be joyful.

The notion of church musicians like my colleagues, John Ferguson and Paul Westermeyer, and others like them, that the primary function of a church musician is to enable the congregations song is right on target. The impulse to sing together comes naturally, but the actual doing of it takes effort and leadership. The Gospel gives more than enough reason to sing, we just need good musicians to help us do it. May they abound.
