Often we naturally set goals in the beginning of a summer; for ourselves, for family and for friends. How did you do with your goals? Were you able to get those chores around the house done? Did you go on vacation, visit family or friends? When we set goals we often never take into account the things that interfere with our plans. This of course is only natural, as we can never know for sure when sickness, death or other life struggles slip into the mix of our plans. Life is truly a journey, full of the good and the bad. It is never perfect and rarely goes completely as we initially plan. It is important to know that we are all on this earth to serve our loving God. Our life’s journey is his plan, not ours. St. Paul the Apostle Council 9652 September-October 2014

As summer closes, it would only be appropriate to take a moment and reflect on the past few months. Often

we naturally set goals in the beginning of a summer; for ourselves, for family and for friends. How did you

do with your goals? Were you able to get those chores around the house done? Did you go on vacation, visit

family or friends?

When we set goals we often never take into account the things that interfere with our plans. This of course is

only natural, as we can never know for sure when sickness, death or other life struggles slip into the mix of

our plans. Life is truly a journey, full of the good and the bad. It is never perfect and rarely goes completely

as we initially plan. It is important to know that we are all on this earth to serve our loving God. Our life’s

journey is his plan, not ours.

I often think of September like New Years day. It is a time to dust ourselves off, look at our successes and

our failings, stand tall and re-evaluate our personal goals. Are we really listening to the calls from God. Is it

‘His will be done’, or is it ours!

Consider this fall looking deep into the activities and events of our Council’s good work. A calendar of

events is posted on our website. http://kofc9652.com/blog/calendar-3/

In conclusion, I wish to extend my personal condolence to the Family of Br. Mel Kealey. Although I only

Chaplain’s Remarks Father Leo Byrne

Brother Knights, Hospitality and Welcome are key elements in any successful group or organization. Many of the positive comments we get at St. Paul the Apostle parish are the result of our attempts to offer hospitality and welcome. Welcoming New Members at the Knights of Columbus Meetings: I suggest that a concerted effort to offer welcome and take quality time to talk to, more important listen to, new members espe-cially when they attend their first meetings will pay big dividends. Frequently I see new members sitting by themselves at their first meetings and the old members chatting with each other Welcoming new parishioners to our parish: I intend to implement a practice I used when I was pastor of a parish 1969 – 1975. New families/individuals would be invited to bring up the bread and wine at a particular Sunday Mass. They would be introduced by name before they arrive at the altar. At the end of Mass they would stand with me at the entrance of the church while I greeted people so parishioners could meet them. I do have concerns that parishioners will barrel right by them and not speak. This happened with the Rite of Entry for those preparing for adult baptism. I would appreciate your support when this begins. Vivat Jesus!

As summer is ending, and autumn begins,

please enjoy the time to be with family, whether it be getting kids ready for school, enrolling in activi-ties in sport or leisure for the upcoming months, or at home preparing for the thanksgiving of all we have accomplished in the past year. But most of all, “Keep Christ at the centre of your daily life”.

The membership of Council 9652 is now 154 members. We have 86 Associate, 66 Insurance, & 2 Inactive members. This includes 19 Honorary Life, 6 Honorary & 4 Disabled members.

We have lost a dear member in August, Mel Kealey. He was both a 3rd degree member of 9652 (for 50 yrs), as well as a 4th degree Sir Knight of Assembly 857 (for 47 yrs). Please re-member him, & his family in our daily prayers.

I encourage all members, aware of any men within our parish of St. Paul’s, who show an inter-est in becoming a member of the Knights of Colum-bus, to assist them in gaining info on who we are & what we do for our parish & community.

I also encourage all members to keep me aware of any personal contact info that changes, to keep our records current. I will be distributing a docu-ment to all members, in the upcoming months to verify or update any personal info, to ensure your records are accurate in our database.

Enjoy the autumn months, and be thankful for God’s bounty in our lives. Dale Tuepah H) 613-389-2174 C) 613-329-5284 [email protected] Vivat Jesus !!

Brothers, Here are some specific goals that I`m considering after chatting with some brother Knights: Volunteerism - improve awareness of volunteer work done by Knights, maybe through quarterly on-line

surveys of membership; recruit someone to help Decency - organize a presentation on risks and solutions to Pornography, maybe as part of `Men Talking to

Men` event, then promote attendance Pro-Life - increase awareness of Euthanasia, maybe through a presentation; recommend $$ support to Eu-

thanasia Prevention Coalition; recruit a Pro-Life chair. Vivat Jesus!

Thoughts on Membership Br. Michael Gallagher

Who was it that asked you? Whom can you ask?

Brothers, with the coming fall our thoughts and activities begin to turn from the comparative leisure of sum-

mer. One of our council's focuses in September will be membership. Please think back to the that time when

another Knight approached you to consider the possibility of membership in a fraternity he thought highly of,

and also thought, you would make a great addition to. Are you glad he did? Would you have missed out on

something important had that Knight not asked you to join?

This month we encourage each member of our council to take a few moments to think of who you know that

would appreciate an opportunity to learn more about the Knights of Columbus and possibly join their talents

and abilities to our efforts. On Tuesday, September 16 at 7:30 we will be holding an information session for

gentlemen interested in finding out more about who the Knights of Columbus are. There are men in our parish

who would appreciate an invitation but unless they're asked may never know of the opportunity. Someone once

invited you.... whom can you now invite?

If you need any information on membership please don't hesitate to contact me ([email protected]).

Delayed Recognition of a significant Milestone

Phil Healey reached a very significant milestone on the 18th August.

With just under 40 years service as a Knight and at age 70, Phil is now an

Honourary Life Member

Congratulations, Phil, from your Brother Knights in Council 9652!

Knightly News, September-October 2014 Pg. 4 Council 9652, Kingston, ON

Birthright Kingston will be hosting a fundraising dinner and silent auction on Saturday November 1, at Our

Lady of Fatima Parish Hall in Kingston. This event will include a delicious roast beef dinner, musical enter-

tainment and an extensive offering of silent auction items. We are also honoured to welcome Frederica

Mathewes-Green as our keynote speaker.

Frederica Mathewes-Green is a wide-ranging author and speaker on the subjects of religion and pro-life caus-

es, whose work has appeared in such diverse publications as the Washington Post, Christianity Today, The Los

Angeles Times and The Wall Street Journal. She has published nine books and over 700 essays. She has ap-

peared as a speaker over 500 times at places like Yale, Harvard, Princeton, Wellesley, The Smithsonian Insti-

tute, Washington National Cathedral and the National Right to Life Committee. She has been interviewed al-

most 700 times on venues including Prime Time Live, The 700 Club, CNN, NBC, Fox News, Time,

Newsweek and USA Today.

In addition to Mrs. Mathewes-Green, we are happy to also welcome the co-president of Birthright Internation-

al and the daughter of our late founder, her namesake; Louise Summerhill.

Birthright was founded by Louise Summerhill in Toronto in 1968 and was the first centre of its kind in the

world. Birthright Kingston received its charter in 1971. There are hundreds of Birthright centres in Canada,

the United States and in Africa.

Birthright Kingston has been helping women make a choice for life for 43 years. Birthright was established

with the indisputable belief that “it is the right of every pregnant woman to give birth and the right of every

child to be born.” The very essence of Birthright is to give friendship, understanding, compassion and support

to women in a crisis situation brought about by the possibility or the fact that they are pregnant.

Tickets are $50 (with a $25 tax receipt) for adults and $25 for students.

We look forward to seeing many of you at this important event for Birthright. This a great opportunity to do

some Christmas shopping. For more information, please call 613-546-5433 or email us at:

[email protected]. Your support is greatly appreciated and will make a difference in the life of an

innocent child and his mother.

Homographs and Ponderisms

Homographs are words of like spelling but with more than one meaning. A homograph that is also pro-

nounced differently is a heteronym. And you think that English is easy….?

The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert .

When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes . Ponderisms? Well, think about them…..!

How is it one careless match can start a bush fire, but it takes a whole box to start a campfire? Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him on a

car ride, he sticks his head out the window? [Homographs: Keith Fernandes (Vancouver); Ponderisms: Nick DaCosta (England)]

Grand Knight Scott Arnold has worked diligently to form a full slate of Directors for the Council, and is happy to intro-duce them to members in this issue of the Knightly News. It is hoped that this can be repeated every year at this time. The Council Director positions are: Church, Family, Community, Council, Youth and Membership. Traditionally in Council 9652, the Deputy Grand Knight assumes the role of Membership Director. The capsules below give short bios and courses of action to be taken by the directors:

Luis Aguilar Jr. -- Church Director

Luis works as a Counsellor in Belleville and Kingston. His father, Luis, is also a member of our Council.

As Church Director, Luis will work on promoting the Catechism, and family events. Luis will also organize the Council’s annual Memorial Mass in Novem-ber, and the annual Retreat (conducted by Father Leo, Council Chaplain)

Howard Gallivan -- Council Director

Howard and Wendy have been married for 46 years. Howard is a Charter Member of Council 9652, and has been Grand Knight - twice. He states:

My assigned responsibility will be to make our council entertaining, enjoya-ble and beneficial for all our members by maintaining a strong, friendly, fra-ternal atmosphere. The key to cultivate this strong, friendly, fraternal atmos-phere is you. I need all of you to help spread the seeds of brotherly love so we can enjoy the activities of our council. I look forward to working with all of you to bring this about. God bless you all!

David Caracciolo -- Community & Culture of Life

Here`s a bit about me: Married, to Lana, since 1979; father of three - Laura (Matt - 3rd Degree Knight & Daniel, aged 3), Lisa and Brandon; a Knight since 2004; born and raised in Trinidad, as sixth of 12 children; immigrated to Cana-da in 1971; lived in the GTA before moving to Kingston in 2006. As your new Community Director I`d like to increase the visibility of our coun-cil in the community. I`ve come to realize that so many of you make great con-

tributions to the parish and community, separate from the Knights. I find this so uplifting and en-lightening. Maybe some of these would benefit from some recognition and support, of either time or material, by our council.

James Hughes -- Family Director

I have a beautiful wife Melanie and three great kids, Oceana 8 yrs, Dakota 6 yrs and

Raiden 3 yrs. They keep us both busy.

I will be working towards putting together fun events about family and together-

ness, which will bring us closer to our children, and our spouses.

Michael Gallagher -- DGK and Membership/Retention Director

Michael and Lise have made Kingston their home for 28 years, and have been members of this parish for that time. Their daughter, Erin, was born here. Michael started his own business, after a career in banking.

Who was it that asked you? Whom can you ask?

Brothers, with the coming fall our thoughts and activities begin to turn from the comparative leisure of summer. One of our council's focuses in September will be membership.

On Tuesday, September 16 at 7:30 we will be holding an information session for gentlemen interest-ed in finding out more about who the Knights of Columbus are. There are men in our parish who would appreciate an invitation but unless they're asked may never know of the opportunity. Someone once invited you.... whom can you now invite?

Mike Gundert -- Youth Director

. I have been married to my beautiful wife Nadia for 5 years, and we have 3 chil-dren: Aaron (4), Hailey (2), and Ella (2 months). We have been calling Kingston home since July 2009.

My experiences date back to 1995 with my involvement in the Columbian Squires program as a Squire and executive member. This led me to joining the Knights in 2001 and to becoming a Squires Counsellor (in Bolton, ON) and an Area Chair-man for the Ontario Squires Provincial Board. My other involvment with the youth has been serving on the core team for the EDGE and LifeTeen youth minis-

tries since 2008, ministering in the LifeTeen youth band, and chaperoning for the annual Steuben-ville Youth Conferences in Providence, Rhode Island and Toronto.

My goal as Youth Director this year is to reach out to our parish schools and to seek their interest

and involvement in activities (new and recurring) which will continue to support the council's rela-

tionship with them. I also look forward to supporting my fellow directors in any way possible. If

you would like to know more about me, or have any ideas for the fraternal year, please feel free to

touch base!

Ray Smith -- Programme Director

Ray has served in many positions on the Executive. He was a very successful Church Director, co-ordinating the First Friday Adoration, the Stations of the Cross in Lent, and the annual Memorial Mass. He is the webmaster for the Council web site.

This year he accepted the position of Programme Director, which requires coor-dinating the activities of the other Directors. At General meetings, Ray intro-duces those Directors who have reports on their activities. And, of course, in his position as Programme Director, Ray gets involved in many of the activities of the Council.

Health Can Change! Br. Stephen Henderson

Buying life insurance is something that's easy to put off until tomorrow. And if your life is as busy as mine, tomorrow can easily become next week, next month, or even next year. I'd like to make a personal plea that, you not make that mistake. Before the leaves fall, make an appointment to meet with me. I can work with you to put a plan in place that will help your family when that help is most needed.

We all know someone whose health changes, instantly and seemingly out-of-the-blue. You may think this can't happen to you. Think again! And keep in mind that no one will ring a bell warning you that your health is about to change. Medical technology has turned many diseases previously termed "death sentences" into very treatable conditions. What medical advances haven't changed, however, is that be-ing diagnosed with one of these diseases will dramatically affect your ability to purchase life insurance coverage. Don't wait until it's too late. Call me today at 613-770-4092. Your Knights of Columbus insurance program is second to none. We recently surpassed $90 billion of life insurance in force, and last year alone we issued more than $8 billion in needed coverage. These numbers represent a safety net for Catholic families that's unsurpassed, and we're proud of that. We're also concerned. Why? Because there are more than 1 million Knights of Columbus members who have no life insurance with us. I suspect that, for many of those 1 million members, tomorrow has become next week, next month or next year. Don't be one of them. Don't wait for the bell to ring. It isn't going to. died at the end of August and will be missed by both St. Paul the Apostle Council 9652 and the Archbishop J. V. Cleary

Assembly 0857.

The photos from Fred Happy show Mel Kealey’s final journey, at his funeral Mass. On the left, the casket enters the

church. The middle photo shows Father Leo incensing the shrouded casket at the end of the Mass. On the right, the 4th

Degree Honour Guard (with swords in the “Present” position) bid a final farewell to Mel.

For the latter part of August, here is what Mike Gallagher and Allan DeBenedetti placed in the Bulletin:

Have you ever thought of joining us?

St. Paul the Apostle Knights of Columbus council enjoys a reputation for being an active and productive group of Catholic men who work to serve our parish and community through social events, fundraising in support of our charitable efforts, and fraternity, within and beyond our council.

It has been our great blessing and good fortune over the 26 years since our council was established to be able to attract men of faith, foresight, energy, and charity to our ranks; indeed it is the primary reason for our success. From the charter members who formed our group, to those who have assumed leadership and plan-ning roles, to the many, willing to step up to the work of meeting the myriad and varied needs of parish, fam-ily, and community, our brother knights and their families are truly our most important resource.

“In service to One, in service to all” has become the basis for friendships made, causes supported, fami-lies involved and achievements accomplished. It has rightly been said that individually there may be little any of us can do, but united there is little we cannot do. In the years ahead the Knights of Columbus at St. Paul’s will take on more challenges, extending the hands of assistance yet further and engaging the capacity of more good men in the process. Might that include you? Have you ever considered joining your abilities with ours in the service of others?

Over the next month members of our council will be providing information on the benefits of member-ship in the Knights, including an information session September 16 at 7:30pm to answer questions you may have. Please plan now on joining us that evening.

In the meantime if you would like to contact us, please phone Scott Arnold (Grand Knight) at 613-530-2941 or Mike Gallagher (membership) at 613-389-3250.

GIVE THANKS

Our present circumstances

may be like an empty plate.

But if we focus on God, rather

than our present circumstanc-

es, we'll find that we still have

reasons to give thanks to the

Lord. His goodness, love &

mercy are never changing

INNER LIGHT

In autumn in the Canada

people are carving out

pumpkins and putting can-

dles inside of them. It made

me think about how, as

Christians, God has put His

light inside of our hearts

Editor’s Note Br. Aubert Pereira

July and August are generally slow months for the Council, with a build-up to more activities in Septem-ber, October and November. Note that the October General Meeting is a Dinner meeting (see Pg. 8)

One new event was a joint social with the CWL in August. Unfortunately, the date conflicted with the wake for Mel Kealey, so that the Knights’ attendance was somewhat lower than anticipated. Neverthe-less, the social went off well.

In July-August, the Council was designated as Ministry of the Month, with a display on the board in the Gathering Space, (see Pg. 15) as well as a column in the Sunday Bulletin.

Upcoming events are the Fish Fry, 27th September, the Pub Night 25th October and the Spaghetti Dinner 8th November. Pages 8/9 of this issue has flyers for these events. In addition, Birthright Kingston has a fundraising dinner in November, and Marie Sardinha has written an article about the din-ner on Page 4, with a poster on Page 5. Please note all these dates in your calendars.

School is starting, the normal round of Fall/Winter activities is about to begin. Enjoy whatever you take part in, and keep safe.

Vivat Jesus!
