Deena Schmalz moved to Western Colorado as a newlywed from California(she married a Delta County native). Through her adventures of experiencingboth the simple aspects and larger wonders of what Western Colorado has to offer,she wrote a series of articles under the column heading of Bloom Where You ArePlanted – A Transplants Guide to Exploring the Western Slope. We hope youenjoy her perspective of life in our corner of beautiful Colorado!

“One of the comments we get daily is, ‘We never knew how spec-tacular this place was.’” So relates a friendly Park Ranger at the Col-orado National Monument. And that’s just what my family thoughttoo when we took them to the Monument for the first time a few weeksago. My parents were here from out-of-state for a short visit and wehad a Saturday afternoon with no definite plans, so off we went toGrand Junction.

The Monument rises majestically along the southern edge of theGrand Valley. As you drive through Grand Junction, you may glanceat the cliffs above the Redlands and think, “Hmmm, that’s nice,” andnot really have any idea of the natural wonder that is camouflagedamong those towering rocks.

The Colorado National Monument rises 2,000 feetabove the valley floor and covers 32 square miles ofrugged terrain. It was established as a park by PresidentTaft in 1911 and today is managed by the National ParkService. It is a wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts.There’s one campground and picnic areas are located invarious places throughout the park. There are also milesof hiking trails ranging in difficulty from short and flatto steep trails rated for expert climbers. The steepcanyon walls are a big draw for rock climbers as well.

One of the giant stone monoliths that is a favorite ofclimbers is Independence Monument. This tower in thesky usually has at least one group a day that works theirway to the top. In fact, while we were admiring thatvery spot, we saw movement on the flat top of Inde-pendence Monument and only with the help of a zoomlens could we make out the individual climbers celebrat-ing at the summit. It was amazing how tiny they werein comparison to the stone giant.

But for those less hearty souls, like myself, the bestpart of the Monument is just driving through it alongRim Rock Drive. This 23-mile road takes you along theedge of the canyons and the scenery changes aroundevery curve. The beautiful, sheer canyon walls are

striped with colors of red, beige, orange and black that seem to shiftwith the light after each passing cloud.

But perhaps even more spectacular than the canyons are the uniquevariety of rock formations that crop up from the valley floor. Just whenyou think you’ve seen the best monolith, the next bend in the road pro-vides an even more breathtaking view. There are more than a dozenoverlooks and pullouts along Rim Rock Drive where you can get outand walk just a short distance to the canyon’s edge.

What I like most about the Monument is that these canyons reallyallow you to get up-close and personal with them. They’re not so vastor so deep as to be overwhelming. Another special treat during springis all of the wildflowers. I never knew the desert could be so greenwith blooming plants! If there is an especially wet spring, those tena-cious little plants can really put on a showy display, and photo-worthyflowers can be seen all the way through the beginning of June.

Several years back, I was having lunch at a friend’s house when I dis-covered the joys of watching all the activity at her birdfeeder. The simplewooden feeder stood on a post just a few feet from her kitchen window.As I sat there as the table, I was thoroughly entertained by the featheredcreatures that were also enjoying their noontime meal.

My husband and I discussed getting our own bird feeder, possibly evenbuilding one, but the plan never came to fruition. A few years later how-ever, he surprised me with the gift of a cedar bird feeder. He installed a

post in the yard outside of our kitchen window and carefully at-tached the feeder to the top. We filled it with seed and then wentinside, sat at our table and waited.

Within 45 minutes, we had our first visitors. I couldn’t believehow many birds were in our neighborhood that were looking foran easy and tasty meal. Soon we had several varieties of birds reg-ularly visiting our seed feeder. And it got a lot noisier around ourhouse too, but in a good way. The symphony of avian songs thatfloated through our windows proved to be more soothing than dis-tracting.

After spending many hours watching my birds while sippingcoffee or eating a snack, I decided I wanted to get to know them alittle better. I mean, how well could I really know them if I didn’teven know their names? So the following spring, off we went toWild Birds Unlimited in Grand Junction to find a bird identificationguide. What an amazing collection of everything a backyard birdercould need!

After perusing several books, my husband and I decided on theBirds of Colorado Field Guide by Stan Tekiela. I highly recommendit. It contains full color photographs of 130 species of birds that ei-

ther live in or migrate through Colorado. It is divided by bird color andis arranged from smallest to largest bird in each color category. It also hasmigration patterns for each bird on a map of the state as well as interestingfacts about the habits of each species.

Now with my guide in hand, I was able to identify all of the birds inmy yard. Some are daily visitors, such as the common House Sparrowand Mourning Dove. Others are seasonal visitors, like the Dark-Eyed Jun-cos that only visit during the cold days of winter. And some birds are justone-day visitors, only stopping to eat and rest on their way to some un-known destination. One of these was the beautiful, strikingly blue LazuliBunting. There was no mistaking him because he’s on the cover of myguide. I wish he’d come again for another visit; there’s always plenty ofroom at the feeder for one more.

Since I’ve had my bird guide, I have identified over 24 different speciesjust in my own yard. That’s a lot of birds! Some days everybody’s in themood to eat at the same time and there can be up to 60 birds around myfeeders. Yes, I said feeders. My collection has now grown to include fourseed feeders and two nectar feeders for the little hummers (that’s whatbirders affectionately call hummingbirds).

Watching the antics of my feathered friends is so relaxing and is a greatantidote for the stresses of daily life. It’s also a very easy and inexpensivehobby to maintain. You can set up a feeder in your own yard for less than$20 and it only takes a few dollars a week to keep it full of wild birdseed.Well, I’ve come to the end of my space and I haven’t even started on theentertaining personalities and habits of all the birds that visit my yard. Iguess that will have to wait for another story, another day.

Getting Ready For Your Home PurchaseBy Sam Erickson

Homeownership is back on the rise, and you might be thinkingabout putting down some roots and taking on a mortgage. It can be adaunting task, but following a few simple steps can help put you inthe best position to be successful with your home purchase.

First, check into your credit score. Along with your income, yourdebt and your assets, this is one of the primary factors determininghow much money you will be able to get from the bank. This is essen-tially a rating of how good you are at paying your bills, so you’ll wantto shore it up after getting a report. Even a small problem like an old,unpaid traffic ticket can reduce the credit score and can easily be takencare of. It’s best to tackle this problem several months before you startseriously looking to buy a home.

Do a home finance audit. A home is a major commitment.Along with the actual mortgage come insurance, property taxesand any home repairs. You can’t just call a landlord in the middleof the night to fix a problem; you’ll be responsible. One easy wayto do this is assiduously to track all of your income and expensesfor two weeks, including small things like an extra coffee andeven your tips. This will let you know if there is any wiggle roomin your finances where you can cut back to increase savings ormake payments on a house. If you are already at the edge of yourspending range, you may need to cut your spending or increaseyour income in order to afford a home. Buying a home you can’tactually afford will leave you stressed out each month and maylead to things like missing payments or even foreclosure in thelong run. If you’re not prepared, it may be best to wait.

Do your research. There are a lot of things you’ll have to re-search in order to be an informed buyer. First, you’ll need to builda team of trusted people to help you with your home purchase.This includes a real estate agent, a mortgage broker or lender, anda home inspector. In addition to researching your team, you’ll

want to do a lot of research on the market. Individual home marketsdiffer, and knowing what the trends are in your market can give youthe tools to make an advantageous offer. You’ll also want to researchneighborhoods. Things like schools, access to public transportation,crime rates and resale value in homes can make a big difference in yourquality of life and in your long-term investment.

Finally, get pre-approved for a loan. A pre-approval—which is dif-ferent than a pre-qualification—is a guarantee from a lender that youwill be able to acquire a loan in that amount. This is key with sellers,particularly those who are choosing from multiple offers. It providesthem with assurance that your deal won’t fall through.

A home is the biggest purchase most people make in their life. Assuch, it deserves extra time, attention and research to make sure thatyou make the right decision. If you do the right kind of work before-hand, once you get your keys you’ll have nothing to worry about.
