Four people went missing while at sea while three others were carried away by huge waves, Luces added. The storm, with maximum winds of 55 kilometres (34 miles) per hour, hit the eastern coast of the southern island of Mindanao late Wednesday, then moved westward, across the central islands before heading to Palawan island. Fierce winds and destructive floods generated by typhoons led to a 2.7 percent year-on-year contraction in farm output, Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said. “Given this quarter’s performance.... even meeting the low end of the target growth rate for the year could pose a big challenge,” he told a news conference. Economic output had expanded by a red-hot 7.0 percent in the same quarter last year, before Super Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest cyclone to ever hit land and the deadliest in the Philippines’ recorded history, caused huge problems. Even then, gross domestic product (GDP) growth rose 6.0 percent in the first half of 2014, making the Philippines one of Asia’s top performers. This also gave the government optimism that it would achieve its full 2014 GDP growth target of 6.5- 7.5 percent. However, he said typhoon damage and weaker performances in other key sectors since then meant the economy only grew 5.3 percent in the past quarter and 5.8 percent through the first nine months of the year. Interim deputy chief statistician Romeo Recide said the third-quarter growth was the lowest since the last quarter of 2011 when it hit 3.8 percent. Typhoon Rammasun left 111 people dead or miss- ing, caused a million people to flee their homes and left millions of others without power for several days across the country’s economic heartland in mid-July. Balisacan said bad weather typical during the sea- son also had a huge impact on farm output. Apart from agriculture, Balisacan said government consumption andpublic construction activities slowed as President Benigno Aquino’s gov-ernment adjusted to “new spending protocols”, some imposed to fightcorruption.

He also cited the “lingering negative impact” of Haiyan, as well asdelays in the layout of the government’s massive post-typhoon recon-struction programme across the devastated central Philippines.

Nevertheless, Balisacan said business sentiment remained optimistic. He said export growth was robust in the third quarter, supported by

the “strengthening of the global manufacturing industry” that boosted thecountry’s key exports of semiconductors, wiring harnesses for vehicles andgarments.—AFP

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2014 7MANILA: The Philippines will cus-tom-build a “popemobile” for PopeFrancis to travel in during his visit tothe fervently Catholic nation inJanuary, organisers said Thursday.

“He is our visitor and we can’t letanything bad happen to him,” thegovernment’s chief protocol officerMarciano Paynor said, adding how-ever that there were “no specificthreats”.

Pope Francis, who has shunnedthe pomp of his predecessors, saidearlier this year he prefers to useopen-top cars rather than theVatican’s bulletproof “popemobile”used by previous pontiffs, which hecalled a “sardine can”.

“It is true something could hap-pen to me but let’s be realistic, at myage I do not have much to lose,” hesaid in June, adding that the “pope-mobile” made it hard to connect withthe faithful.

Paynor declined to give the speci-fications of the vehicle to be used inthe Philippines for security reasons, but said the pope might opt for anopen car for some appearances.

A total of six million people areexpected to turn up when the Pontiffhears mass in the city of Tacloban, ravaged by last year’s Super TyphoonHaiyan, on January 17 and in Manila’smain outdoor park the following day,he said.

“The Pope requested that it bekept simple. He wants nothing flam-boyant,” said Father Antonio Pascualfrom the organising committee.

The “popemobile” was beingdesigned in coordination withVatican security, said presidentialcommunications undersecretary JessYu, another member of the organis-ing committee.

“Definitely, the Pope will be visi-ble to the public (from the vehicle),”Yu said.

In August, comments by thepreparatory committee sparkedspeculation that the pope could betransported in a jeepney — a com-mon form of cheap public transport, often decorated with colourful reli-gious artwork, evolved from thejeep.

However officials would not con-

firm the speculation Thursday. The last pope to visit the

Philippines, John Paul II, rode a white“popemobile” in 1995, where hewaved to crowds from a glass, bullet-proof cage at the back of the vehicle.Authorities later uncovered analleged plot by Al-Qaeda to assassi-nate John Paul while he was inManila.

The bulletproof “popemobile” wasfirst introduced after the attemptedassassination of John Paul in 1981.

Two flower-bearing orphans willwelcome Francis when he arrives atManila airport from Colombo at duskon January 15, organisers said.

Pope Francis will then spend theentire day on January 17 hearingmass and comforting victims ofHaiyan in Tacloban and Palo town.

Haiyan, the strongest storm to hitland, left over 7,300 people dead ormissing in November last year after ittriggered tsunami-like storm surgesthat wiped out entire towns.

One year after the disaster, survivorsare mired in deeper poverty as theystruggle to rebuild their lives.—AFP

MACAU: Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao comprehensivelydismantled American Chris Algieri to retain his World BoxingOrganization welterweight title at the Cotai Arena in Macau onSunday. Pacquiao dropped Algieri to the canvas six times dur-ing the 12-round contest in the southern Chinese city to winan overwhelming unanimous decision, 119-103, 119-103, 120-102 on the judges’ cards.

Algieri, the unbeaten WBO light welterweight champion, was outclassed from the start, with the eight-division world

champion Pacquiao knocking the Long Islander down twice inthe second round, though on one occasion it looked like a slip.

Pacquiao was landing punches at will as the quick Algieritried to run, slip and hide from the onslaught.

But the congressman form Sarangani province really turnedit on from the sixth, smashing Algieri to the canvas with a dev-astating straight left.

The American only just beat the count and dropped to hisknee a moments later as blows rained in from all angles.

He somehow survived and was knocked down twice morein the ninth and 10th, with one left sending him sprawlingacross the ring.

“I’m satisfied,” said Pacquiao. “I did my best. I was trying for aknockout but he was fast and keeps moving.”

“He’s perfected his style,” said Algieri. “He’s perfected the artof fighting like Manny Pacquiao.

“He hurt me once when he buzzed me with a left hook. Butthat was the only time.” —AFP

Maserati-driving ‘roadbully’ defends himself

on national TV MANILA: A Maserati-driving businessman accused ofmauling a traffic officer in the Philippine capital went onnational television Friday to defend himself after he wastransformed into an internet villain.

The businessman, Joseph Russel Ingco, told nationalevening newscasts on Friday that he felt forced to explainhis side of the incident out of safety fears.

Ingco was caught on video holding a traffic officer byhis shirt and dragging him along the road out of the win-dow of his blue Maserati Ghibli. The aide had flagged himdown for a violation.

The video, shot by a fellow traffic officer, went viral, drawing the ire of the country’s vocal Facebook andTwitter mobs, and prompting city authorities to put up a100,000-peso ($2,000) reward for information on the busi-nessman’s whereabouts. Social media users vilified Ingco, calling him a “road bully”, “liar” and “mauler”.

“This shows that social media can be a tool for justice,”Francis Tolentino, head of a government body that man-ages traffic in Manila, told AFP on Saturday.

“I am afraid for my safety. I am willing to face the con-sequences,” Ingco told GMA television, stuttering at somepoints during the interview. —AFP

PBAK Masters’ champions: Sonia Mathews, Naning Hernan and Kevin AndayaBy Zhander Grande

KUWAIT: The final round of the remaining divisions of PBAK Masters’ champi-onship edition continued at the Cozmo Keifan Bowling Center and to the sur-prised of bowling enthusiasts new faces occurred as new breed of champi-ons. The ever smiling and beauteous Sonia Mathews seized the Ladies Class Aand Indonesian lady bowling stalwart captured the Class B while teenageheartthrob Kevin Andaya as newly crowned champion for Mens Class C.

The 14 qualified bowlers who topped the Class C group were: UlyssesMenezes, Moises Amahan, Omar Saqran, Ahmad Fahmi, Renato Pante,Anastasius Menezes, Hermie Saliba, Siddarth Nair, Kevin Andaya, BimaNitikusumo, Endang Wendy, Benyamin Hasan, Khaled Al Tattan andMohammad Al Oathman.

In the initial two games, Anastasius who scored 177 and 166 (343) leadthe pack of 10 followed by Omar with his 318, Khaled (299), Al Othman (299),Ahmad (297), Hermie (290), Ulysses (287), Kevin (281), Moises (281) andSiddarth (258). After the third and fourth games when slow starter Kevin pro-duced the highest scores of 157 and 191 with total score of 629 he snatchedthe top rank from Anastasius (604). They were closely followed by Ahmad(601), Hermie (587), Mohammad (583), Ulysses (580), Omar (579) and Moises(538). In Game 5, third placer Ahmed scored his highest score of 213 andgrabbed the leadership from Kevin who remain hushed although deviatedwith 16 pins (814-798). Down under, the stalkers’ scores were very trivial andstill anybody’s game for the final game. The intensity amplifies for every throwof the protagonists but the reserved Kevin who scored above average fromGame 3 remained consistent and paid off when he topped Ahmad’s score(170-142). Another surprised was Moises who was No. 7 in Game 5 seized thethird position. At an early age in bowling, Kevin showed that he is the heirapparent of his parents (Kiko and Mina Andaya) who were both champions inthe world of bowling.
