REPORT OF THE GRAND KING
From: Scott M. Ayen R.E. Grand King
To the Most Excellent Grand High Priest, Right Excellent Grand Scribe and Secretary and the Companions all of the Great State of New Hampshire,
First of all, my most humble thanks to the companions for electing me to the role of Grand King this year. I look forward to continued service in the many years to come. Again, I find very little value in the Travel Log style report and will instead offer my observations and make some recommendations. I attended many different events this year as the Grand King and feel I represented the state well on all of those occasions. Feel free to contact me at any time discuss these topics with me as I am always looking to learn and grow.
My Observations
Observation #1: The leadership void from the missing generation is starting to dissipate as the younger generation finds their stride. There is still much work to be done but progress is happening.
Observation #2: The general lack of focus and planning is getting better but not much has changed in the last 12 months. This will be changing however. In the past month, the incoming Dias officers of all three Grand York Rite lines have agreed to meet monthly for the purpose of planning and strategy discussions. The focus will be on helping the local level bodies and let that help the Grand Bodies. There has to be an excitement and a buzz that will cause other blue lodge members to want to join us and see what they are missing out on! We have too much to keep hiding it from them!
Observation #3: I said this last year, but NOW it is a time for action. It is time for the new guard, READY OR NOT, to put up or shut up. I for one am READY! Let’s go! On that same vein, I am also ready to learn and absorb from those who have gone before me. If you allow me to continue in a leadership role, I will work hard at trying to bring the Rite back to its rightful place as a vehicle for further Masonic light and fellowship!
Observation #4: We need to dust off this Rite and put a high gloss shine back on it. I think that if we EXCEL in the areas of COMMITMENT to our Membership and KNOWLEDGE in our beautiful ritual, we CANNOT FAIL!!
Observation #5: Our visitation process is outdated and virtually useless. We need to spend sometime this year thinking about the process and rebuilding it to fit the needs of the Grand Chapter in 2015!
10
Observation #6: We are running out of able bodies at both the local and state level! It is time for us to start thinking about and possibly even planning for the complete merger of the Royal Arch and Cryptic Council in this state. These two bodies have been working in near lockstep for quite some time now and maybe it is time to consider examining this idea in earnest. The Grand Chapter and Grand Council should work together to vet this idea more fully and talk with the local bodies about it. I personally think it can be done without losing any of the substance of either the Chapter or Council.
My Suggestions (MAPLE) – My suggestion can be summed up by using the letters of the word MAPLE. My parents for years now have made maple syrup. It is a painstaking but very rewarding process. They find great enjoyment in doing it. That is how I feel about the York Rite and its current situation. There is a LOT of hard work to do but I know in the end the effort WILL be worth every minute of labor. The fruits of our hard work will be sweet and delicious just like that wonderful maple syrup.
Suggestion #1: Mentoring in the Blue Lodges & Membership – This is CRITICAL to our
success in the future. Without strong Blue Lodges we do not have a Royal Arch Chapter. All Royal Arch Masons took an obligation to bring light to our lesser informed Brethren, it is time to start honoring that commitment by MENTORING in your own and possibly neighboring Blue Lodges. New members NEED to have at least a year to learn and grow in their own Blue Lodges. Let us be the ones who are there to help them on their journey and answer their questions and concerns as they arise. When the time is right and they want to take that next step we can be there to guide them to further light by taking the York Rite path.
Suggestion #2: Appreciation for our Members & Appeal – This is fairly self-explanatory but
never the less can be obtained by starting with a few simple things
1. Honor your 10, 25, 40 and 50 year plus members – time for a veterans program and make a big deal out of it!
2. Let’s unify dues collection into one place. We already have a vehicle for this called the York Rite Council. Have all dues be collected in one place by the York Rite Council and fund distributed to the local level on a regular basis. This will allow our members to write ONE check each year or use a credit card to pay their dues!
3. Get back to making our meetings efficient, entertaining and informative, which trying to minimize the number of nights out they have to spend away from their families!
4. Start an initiative to restore members who have left for whatever reason and give them a reason to want to rejoin us!
11
5. Time to listen, the Grand York Rite needs to have a series of Town hall meetings and listen to the companions to see where we can improve and make our Rite more enjoyable and meaningful.
Suggestion #3: Progress on Ritual Improvement & Perfection– The ritual in the state is getting
better. In striving for perfection we must continue to DO THE WORK and make PROGRESS. Get better each time you do it. Learn something NEW. Work on it a little bit each day or week, in time the ritual will be something to marvel at again! We have some of the best ritual in all of Masonry, let’s prove it!
Suggestion #4: Light & Leadership – As stated in the first suggestion we need to be Masonic
leaders and dispense light. Start by, guiding and mentoring new members of the fraternity. Dispense light to those members who have been around for a long time. Time to be a force in our Blue Lodges for good, making them as strong as we possibly can! It is past time for the leadership of the Grand York Rite in New Hampshire to start helping in this process, starting with a Chapter of Instruction and membership materials.
Suggestion #5: Excellence, Energy and Enthusiasm – These are required from all members if we
wish to preserve the York Rite in New Hampshire. We need to be cheerleaders, teachers, friends, brothers, and whatever else is required of us. This is a fight to the finish which we will not win with these 3 things.
It has been my honor and privilege to serve the Grand York Rite this past year and hope that I can continue to work with everyone else in our endeavor to make the York Rite truly great and special to all Masons!
Fervently,
Scott M Ayen
R.E. Grand King

REPORT OF THE GRAND CAPTAIN OF THE HOST
To the Most Excellent Grand High Priest, Grand Officers and Companions of the Grand Royal arch Chapter of NH:
It is my pleasure to submit this report to you for the Capitular Year, ending May 2015. I assumed the office of Grand Principal Sojourner in May of 2014, and rather unexpectedly was elevated to Grand Captain of the Host after our worthy companion, Brother Beiner relocated for family purposes.
The Grand High Priest ruled that I could not serve as a visiting officer as I was not elected, so I served as Captain of the Host for the visiting officer during a few visitations for the GHP, Grand King and Grand Scribe. This worked well for visiting purposes.
While I did not travel out of state for the various convocations in the New England states, I believe that my extensive travel in-state on behalf of the Grand Chapter and the Grand High Priest are testament to my belief in the importance of our order. However, I believe there is more that we can do. In March, I attended the Order of DeMolay degree day in Concord where I brought the greetings of the York Rite bodies encouraged the 4 new candidates and the members of DeMolay to continue in their Masonic journeys which will hopefully end with their joining the York Rite. Later in March I met with the incoming top officers for the three grand bodies where we outlined some mutual goals, set some mutual tasks to begin work on and towards in an effort to save our rite. It was a productive meeting and I am sure that many good things will come from the leadership of each body meeting together. Ideally, once we, as a rite, are strong (as we have been and can be again) we won’t be worrying about cross-body officer appointments and the like, but it is going to take a lot of work to get there.
General observations: 1) I am of the firm belief that it is imperative the York Rite in New Hampshire must survive. We have several bodies within 30 miles of each other that do not have enough members to legally open and close. Rather than them die, as a serious exercise in discussion, the potential discussions for merging should begin. One needn’t give up location entirely, indeed they could alternate, but in order for us to save these bodies, we should discuss it. Whether we look to a ‘valley’ system used by another rite or maintain our current city affiliations means little if we can’t keep things afloat; the hard questions need to be asked and discussed thoroughly. 2) We must have a meaningful message to convey to our companions, they deserve it. Presentations on the Royal Arch Research Association and what awards are available by the Grand Chapter are not inspiring messages. Education, membership goals, and ideas are what inspire people and we should have a coordinated message meant to enlighten and inspire and it CAN be done. 3) While there can and will be countless discussions about ritual performance and abilities, until we build back to the point we are a strong rite again, we will need ‘performers’ with at least a couple of backups who can do varying parts. This is not insurmountable and we must work with what we have and while we may not be letter perfect in every occasion, performance and repetition will get us there and we should encourage practice, assistance and trainings that focus on getting us to be a ritualistic
13
and tactically strong organization-we are capable, we just need the work and investment to get us there. 4) I have suggested before and I will again that it would behoove us as a rite to develop a strategic plan…not of the nature that grand lodge endeavored that never produced any results, but one that is actively developed and has buy in from many concerned.
I certainly do not have all the answers, and I do not believe that any one person does, but through discussion between members, active participation and planning, I am convinced we can not only stop the bleeding, but prevent any further bloodletting.
It has been my distinct honor and pleasure to serve the Grand Chapter of New Hampshire. I believe the degrees of the chapter are impressive, unique, and tell a story that is necessary for the full enlightenment of our brethren. If the companions of New Hampshire see fit to elect me to a full term, I will endeavor to serve the Grand Chapter and all of its members to the best of my ability.

Report of the Grand Sentinel
To the ME Grand High Priest, Grand Officers and Companions of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Hampshire: It was my pleasure to serve the Grand Chapter, R.A.M. of NH as a Grand Sentinel for the past year as this was my first year serving in this position. I did attend many York Rite events throughout the State in the past year seeing the hard work of a small but dedicated group of Companions. My duties as a Grand Lodge Line Officer sometimes conflicted and did not allow me to attend all Chapter events but I made efforts to attend as many events as possible. I continued to stay active in local Chapter activities including serving as an officer in my own chapter, North Star Chapter #16 of Lancaster, NH. I was recently elected there to serve as the High Priest for the coming year. I traveled around to supporting various York Rite events and in the fall of 2014 I did have the pleasure of attending a Table Chapter held at King Solomon Chapter #17 in Milford, NH. Thank you Most Excellent for the pleasure of serving the Grand Chapter, R.A.M. of NH. Sincerely and Fraternally, David S. Collins David S. Collins, HP, Grand Sentinel

REPORT OF THE GRAND PRINCIPLE SOJOURNER
TO The ME Grand High Priest, Grand Officers and Companions of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Hampshire:
The following is the report of your Grand Principle Sojourner for the year 2014-2015. The year was an interesting one for me in Grand Chapter. I started the year, having been appointed as the Grand Royal Arch Captain, but with the unplanned departure of Companion Beiner, I was elevated to the position of Grand Principle Sojourner. This year I was able to visit two chapters beyond my own. I was able to attend the visitation for Hiram Chapter No. 24, Trinity Chapter No.2, and my own, Mt. Horeb Chapter No. 11, where I was serving as the High Priest. All were very enjoyable gatherings with the companions present and the work done was wonderful.
I wish to thank MEGHP H. Steven Wood for having appointed me as the Grand Principle Sojourner for the year.
Sincerely,
Patrick J. O’Sullivan, Grand Principle Sojourner

REPORT OF THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
To the Most Excellent Grand High Priest, Grand Officers and Companions of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Hampshire:
Your Finance Committee met with our Grand Treasurer, R.E. Companion Verne S. Anderson, on April 6, 2015 for
the purpose of auditing the Grand Chapter financial records for the past fiscal year. Once again your Committee
found the financial records in excellent condition and commends the Grand Treasurer for his excellent work.
Your Finance Committee has also prepared a recommended budget for the year 2015–2016, which is hereby
presented for acceptance. The Finance Committee recommends an increase to the per capita of $2.00, making the
Grand Chapter Per Capita $8.00.
This increase is to offset the costs of three budget items. They are:
Grand Convocation Expenses – To offset annual increases. The 2014 Annual Convocation was $1,800 over
budget. Increase $500.00 (from $1,000 to $1,500).
Grand High Priest Travel Expenses – To offset increased costs of travel. Increase $200.00 (from $300 to
$500).
Educational Material –Budgeted in 2014, this item should have additional funds to stem our losses in
membership. Increase $300.00 (from $200 to $500).
Additionally, the budget has the following notable items:
Emerging Leaders Program – $1,000.00 is budgeted to come from the Permanent Fund to pay the expenses
of candidates attending the Emerging Leaders Program at the Northeast Department Conference.
Donations – Donations from the Hiram Wales Johnson Memorial Fund will now go to organizations within
the State of New Hampshire. In addition to last year’s recipient, New Hampshire MasoniCare (which
includes Evergreen Place), the budget includes donations to New Hampshire DeMolay, New Hampshire
Rainbow, and the NH Masonic Charitable Foundation.
York Rite Information System – Budgeted for 2014-2015, the Grand Chapter’s records were not moved over
to YRIS, requiring the funds for the 2015-2016 budget.
We thank the Grand Chapter for the opportunity to serve as the Finance Committee.
Respectfully submitted:

To the Leadership of the Grand York Rite Bodies in the State of New Hampshire and Companions all,
It was a pleasure to serve the Grand York Rite Bodies as their Committee on Education and
Membership for the past few years. We thank the leadership for appointing us to take on this task.
While we did not have the quantity of new members of a few years ago, we did have a general
improvement in the work.
The committee is again recommending action on two items:
Stronger commitment to our membership, and Deeper knowledge of our ritual and customs.
Together, these things will, we believe, lead to excellence, setting the hallmark of the York Rite
in the days to come.
Recommendations for Immediate Implementation
1) MENTOR. As members of the York Rite, we took an obligation to dispense light to our less informed
Brethren. Become a mentor in your Blue Lodge. Be not only proficient at the lessons of ancient craft
masonry but at their meaning as well. Teach this knowledge to these newly made brothers. Answer their
questions and when the time is right they will ask the questions only the York Rite can answer for them.
THIS IS PROBABLY OUR MOST IMPORTANT CHARGE TO DATE. We MUST help our blue lodges become
strong, let them see we are NOT a threat to them but rather a beacon of light.
2) EDUCATION AT EVERY MEETING. We must focus on that which will bring Companions and Sir Knights
out to a meeting. Education is fundamental to Masonry, and should be used at every meeting to engage
our members, utilizing Grand Officers as needed to assist.
As suggestions, start a discussion on:
A portion of the ritual. Dig into its meaning and how it should be portrayed to the candidates. The more we know about the ritual the better we will perform it, and the more meaningful it will be to the candidate.
The symbols of the York Rite. Any of the seven liberal arts and sciences.
23
3) PLANNING. Lack of sufficient planning hurts the attendance at many York Rite events. Events need to
be planned with enough lead time and communication to the membership, and to the public.
Cooperation and coordinated planning with other Bodies will make for better attended and generally
more successful events.
4) RITUAL DIVERSITY & EXCELLENCE. The bedrock of the York Rite is its beautiful ritual. It completes the
story started as we began our Masonic journey. We need to tell that story in the most captivating and
meaningful way possible. Here are some ideas on how best to do this:
Maintain a list of people willing and able to perform parts of degrees. A list will help us identify areas of need, for members to work on memorizing, and allow work to be more diverse, by drawing on more members. Utilize the York Rite College in creating your list.
Rehearse. Work on the ritual continually and progressively. Start by reading from the book. Work on perfecting the floor work and getting good at the mechanics of the degrees. Memorization and performance then can come into play.
Do Full Openings at every meeting (If multiple bodies meet on one night, have a different body open each time). If a sufficient number are present to open at each meeting, close as well. If not, recess the body.
Share the work. Break up bigger parts between members. There is no reason that the large pieces of ritual cannot be broken into more digestible portions. Give members work to keep them involved.
5) ELEVATOR SPEECH ‐ MISSION & VISION STATEMENT. For members to easily tell “What the York Rite
is All About”, we should have clearly stated Mission and Vision Statements for the organization, with a
short list of bullet points our companions can use to explain York Rite in thirty seconds. We will have a
business card sized aide to assist in this endeavor at the Annual in May.
Many more things can be done, but we believe these five will have the greatest impact in both
education and membership as we move forward.
Respectfully submitted,
Scott M Ayen, Chairman
Paul C. Smith
Andy M. Lord

ADDRESS OF THE MOST EXCELLENT GRAND HIGH PRIEST
GRAND CHAPTER OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Hampshire Report of the Grand High Priest
Capitular Year May 2014 through May 2015 It is my pleasure to look out and see so many of you that that my wife and I consider as friends, and I welcome all of you to the 196th Convocation of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Hampshire. To all of our Grand Officers, our Most Worshipful Master’s representative (District Deputy Grand Master, John Gordon), New England District Deputy Grand High Priest (Gene Fricks), distinguished guests, Companions all, and of course, a special warm welcome to all our Ladies, for without their support we would not be here. It has been my distinct pleasure to serve you for this Capitular Year from May 2014 to May 2015. I have enjoyed your companionship and friendship at all of our meetings, visitations, and gatherings, and I thank you all for your warm, cordial greetings and the courtesies you have extended to me and my wife, Monique. It has been a wonderful and educational year for me, as I have travelled extensively both within New Hampshire and throughout the other states in New England. My one regret is that I did not get to visit any of the Grand Chapters in Canada due to conflicting dates in our schedules. Each of our Chapters has a problem with declining membership numbers, and I can assure you that we are not the only ones experiencing this. This subject has been a top priority at all of the Grand Annual Meetings that I have attended. It is a recurring theme, and many heads much more knowledgeable than I have spent a great deal of time discussing, dissecting and analyzing the problem searching for solutions. Training and education are both currently part of those solutions, and we have implemented them both within our Grand Chapter and our local Chapters. However, like any programs that we implement, we must continually monitor the programs and analyze the results; planning and implementing changes and improvements to increase the effectiveness of the programs. I wish there was magic wand that would correct this problem, but it is going to take much hard work by each one of us to reverse this trend. Every one of us has to become an ambassador to our Blue Lodges, extolling the benefits and knowledge the Brothers will receive by joining the
41
Chapter and experiencing our Capitular Degrees that explore the building of the cathedrals, then progressing through the Council’s Cryptic (Crypt) Degrees, followed by their joining the Chivalric Orders of the Commandery. We have much knowledge to give to our Brothers, and our degrees and orders are both beautiful and fill out our Masonic education. As you well know, the only source we have for new members is the Blue Lodge. The Lodge is also plagued with the same problem of declining membership that all fraternal organizations are experiencing. Raising new members is not just a problem for the Blue Lodge Officers; they need everyone’s help to grow their membership. Who best to help them but us? When talking with your non‐Masonic friends and neighbors who you believe would be good Masons, mention the Masonic activities that are happening in the Masonic Lodges and Chapters. Be enthusiastic when you tell them what we do! Most people have heard about Masonry, but they do not understand what we do. I have found that when I talk with them, they will ask questions such as: “Why did you join” and “What are Masons actually doing for the community”. Be prepared to talk with them. You do not have to be eloquent. Be sure to let them know that they will never be asked by you or any other Mason to join the Masons. Make them aware that if they are interested in exploring more about Masonry or becoming a member, they are required by our rules to ask a Mason. You love Masonry! You believe in what we are teaching, and the charities we support. Let others know how you feel and create in them an interest concerning Masonry. It is the only way we will insure that our beloved Masonry will survive, and it is time for you to become involved! Think about it, and join us in introducing good men to Masonry and Brothers to the York Rite. I have travelled to many functions and meetings both within the state and to our neighbor states throughout the New England Region, both near and far. The pleasure of meeting and talking with our peers from other states is very enjoyable, and it makes the business meetings bearable. Having travelled for the past two years, I and my wife now see many friends who also travel to the state annual meetings, and we enjoy getting updated on their activities as well as making new friends. I will not bore you with a detailed listing of all my travels, that report will be attached to this. Suffice it to say that I have travelled to Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. I look forward to continue working for you and with you, and rest assured that Monique and I will continue to bring your greetings to our Masonic friends and neighbors every chance we get. Fraternally, H. Stephen Wood ME Grand High Priest

REPORT OF THE JURISPRUDENCE COMMITTEE
To Companion H. Stephen Wood, Most Excellent Grand High Priest, and the Companions of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Hampshire:
Your Jurisprudence Committee has reviewed the report of the Grand High Priest for the 2014-2015 Capitular year and wishes to thank him for its submission. The report of the Grand High Priest is reviewed by this Committee to ensure that the integrity of the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of New Hampshire is being preserved
The Committee reviewed the level of activity shown by the Grand High Priest both within and without the State, and is of the general opinion that he represented this Grand Chapter well. We recognize his participation in activities involving Rainbow and Eastern Star. We also recognize and appreciate his attendance and participation at meetings and sessions of appendant orders in New Hampshire.
While the Committee reviewed and concurred with the general observations and comments made by the Grand High Priest in his report, it was not possible to review the decisions made and actions taken by the Grand High Priest. The report submitted for review by this Committee was devoid of those specific details necessary to demonstrate that the Grand High Priest functioned effectively as the chief administrator of our Grand Chapter. While it may be in error, this Committee believes that changes of by-laws, appointments of Grand Representatives to other jurisdictions and other administrative decision-making actions occurred during the past Capitular year. Without access to those actions, this Committee cannot ascertain that the regulations of this Grand Chapter have been properly followed. This discrepancy may have been an oversight on the part of the Grand High Priest, but that does not negate the fact that it makes the report significantly incomplete.
Most Excellent Sir, it has been a pleasure working with you during the past Capitular year, and we thank you for the privilege and opportunity of serving this Grand Chapter. We also wish you success in your future personal and Masonic endeavors.
Sincerely and Fraternally,
Roger A. Douillette, Sr., MEPGHP Robert L. Sutherland, Jr., MEPGHP Richard F. Cole, Jr., MEPGHP, Chairman
