Dear parent I am busy signing off on the mid-year reports and it is wonderful to read about the great effort made by our pupils, resulting in very positive gains in progress and achievement. It has also been pleasing to see improvements in skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, giving and receiving feedback and being prepared to take risks as a learner and embrace concepts/ideas that are new or different. These key skills will be a part of what will underpin and drive the learning and teaching at our school as we strive for the new goals and targets we have set as a school.

As I have mentioned earlier this term, we will be sharing with you next term the revised vision for our school and the associated goals and actions. I was hoping to have a date for you by now, but we are looking to line up a guest speaker to make the most of us being gathered together, and are still working through this. We will communicate this date as soon as it is confirmed.

It is with sadness that we bid farewell to some people this week. As has been mentioned earlier, Mr Matt Naera is moving to Wanaka with his family after five years of service to our school. Thank you so much Mr Naera, for all that you have contributed to our school with your great skills and passion in IT, mathematics, music and sport. You have made a big difference and will be greatly missed. Mr Stephen Simpson has a new position at Merrin School as the English for Speakers of Other Languages teacher. Thank you, Mr Simpson, for your two terms; we wish you all the best. We also say goodbye to our fantastic tutor – Mr Jack MacGregor. Miss Ella Felton left two weeks ago as she had to work at the Glastonbury Music Festival, but sadly Jack’s last day will be Friday. Our tutors, over their 12 months with us, become such an important part of our Grammar family and add so much value to our school. Jack and Ella have continued this legacy and have been amazing. Please take the time to say goodbye to Jack. He doesn’t want to go!

Have a fantastic two weeks and I hope you all find time to have fun as a family. Take care and see you next term!

Mr Scott Thelning

Creating Moral Citizens - Virtue of the Week is: Truthfulness

What is Truthfulness?

Truthfulness is being honest in your words and actions. You don't tell lies, even to protect yourself from getting into trouble. You don't listen to gossip and prejudice. You see with your own eyes and make up your own mind about what is true.

Being true to yourself means being who and what you are, without exaggerating to impress others or trying to look like something you are not. It is being yourself, your true self.

Congratulations! You are practising Truthfulness when you…

Speak only the truth

Practise justice by investigating the truth for yourself

Don’t let others tell you what to think

Can tell the difference between fact and fantasy

Admit it when you have made a mistake

Know you are enough - don’t exaggerate or deceive to impress others

Well, Term II is almost over and what a busy term we have had! Fifteen new children started Pre-School; two children moved up to start in the Junior School; new furniture arrived; our wonderful garden box was built and planted; Mr Scarrott built us a new shingle pit; we started weekly gymnastics sessions; and, of course. who could forget the amazing Wheel-a-thon? Phew – what a term! While the school closes over the term break, we will be continuing running our holiday programme and the teachers will be revisiting, assessing, evaluating and planning for the term ahead. Over the term break, the teaching team will be taking part in professional development lead by Interlead consultants around internal evaluation, which will continue to support and guide our programme. In April, the Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Whaariki, was updated. It continues to be a document which supports the needs of all children in our Pre-School and a document from which, as a team of teachers, we are very proud and passionate to be able to teach. Last week, the first lettuces were harvested from our Pre-School garden. The Y8 children used some for their dinner preparations at Ronald McDonald House. There were varying opinions about the taste of the lettuce and what meals we could use it in. Most children knew that lettuce was a healthy option of food to eat; however, many had never tried it on its own before. We will wait patiently for the broccoli and cauliflower to grow.

If you are heading away for the term break, travel safely. If your child is having time off to sleep in, rest up and enjoy the break. For those who are keeping the routine the same, I am sure your children will have great fun during the holiday programme. Please remember to check the departure time for outings during the holiday programme, as we simply cannot wait if you are running late. Ms Libby Avery

Enterprise Unit Last Tuesday was the grand finalé of our Enterprise Unit. Thank you to everyone who supported our Food Court. It was a truly amazing team effort that involved our community in such a positive way. It has been an exciting learning experience for our Junior School children that included all areas of our Blueprint. We raised just over $2,000.00 for charity. This money will be presented to representatives from KidsCan, The Maia Health Foundation and Ronald McDonald House on Friday 4 August at our assembly. I would also like to take this opportunity once again to thank all those businesses who donated ingredients, plates, bowls and cutlery for our Food Court. A particular thank you to the Curators’ House Restaurant for providing the beautiful paella. Reminders:

The Junior School Assembly this week will be an itinerant music assembly. We will celebrate the Junior School children who learn a musical instrument at our school.

Parking will be available on the Cobbles outside the library from 1.30pm. Please park as directed and take great care as there will be many children moving around this area between buildings, as it is the end of the school day and term.

There will not be Family Room on Friday, as it is the last day of term. All pupils and their belongings must be collected at the close of school at 3.00pm.

The final week of term is upon us and we can reflect on another busy and eventful term.

Last week two teams represented our school at the Canterbury Schools’ Chess Tournament held in the Halswell Library. Both teams were worthy representatives of our school and acquitted themselves with distinction in their games.

Our senior team of Jasper Moss, Joel Prince, Lewis Parker and Yong Sun finished 6th of the 21 teams in the Year 7/8 competition, and our Junior team of James Burt, Angus Whitteker, Ray Sun and Ollie du Toit finished an impressive 2nd of the 26 teams in the Year 5/6 competition. This result enables our Junior team to compete at the South Island Tournament in September.

Thank you to Mr du Toit and Mrs Prince for managing and transporting the team. Your support is much appreciated.

Last Tuesday, the Y7&8 pupils were lucky enough to listen to a talk from Andre Lovatt, a current Cathedral Grammar parent whose daughters Noor (7G) and Kiri (4G) are in Girls' School. Andre was speaking on behalf of the Sir Peter Blake Trust to coincide with The Leadership Week which runs nationally from 2-7 July. Having received an award from the Trust in 2015 for his leadership in the restoration of the Arts Centre in Christchurch, Andre spoke of the qualities of Sir Peter and the legacy he left behind. At the end of his presentation, Andre left the children with three questions to consider:

What is my five-year inspirational dream? When am I at my best? What will I never do?

The pupils have been discussing these questions in their Mitre and Citizenship times. Our thanks to Andre for his time and motivational thoughts.

On Monday, a team of Y8 pupils took part in the Canterbury Primary Schools’ Korfball tournament. This was our first foray into the tournament and followed six weeks of sessions on a Monday lunchtime by Yuri from Korfball Canterbury. The team finished a credible 8

th out of 20 teams. Congratulations to the team: Isabella Bullen, Hayley Duggan,

Vivien Guttmann, Katie McHerron, Jemima Pett (8G), Tim Seeto (8DM), Jaiden Beer, George Ladley, Johnny Bullen, William Morris and Henri Murison (8JE).

Hayden Reed (4B) has reached the milestone of mastering 50 trigger words in his Davis Programme. Well done, Hayden!

In Challenges, Sam Cox (5B) has been creating his own fidget spinner using the school’s 3D printer and Tinkercad, a free on-line program for 3D printing. After printing one functional model, Sam realized his design was too big. After some modifications, his second attempt was successful. He is now challenging himself to make his design unique.

Congratulations also to all our finalists in the English Speaking finals on Tuesday and Wednesday. Earlier today Bella Beirne was the overall winner of the Senior Girls’ competition while Sam Hales won the Junior Boys.’ Tomorrow, we look forward to the Junior Girls’ and Senior Boys’ competitions. Thank you to our adjudicator, Sister Leonie O’Neill, and to Mrs Hubers for her organization of this year’s competition. Sometimes wins on a Saturday can be in short supply, and result in rash promises from coaches! Congratulations to Mr Foster’s Boys’ Kiwi Sticks White hockey team on their comprehensive 12-4 win last weekend – and to Mr Foster on following through with a stylish caterpillar – and being able to walk on Monday morning! (Miss T has tips on how not to be caught on camera!)
