Grammar Gatsby
A huge congratulations to the Friend’s Association for the wonderful Grammar Gatsby event on Saturday night. The event was a wonderful celebration of both the generosity of the school community and the opportunity to have it in our refurbished hall. I won’t steal the Friends’ thunder by announcing how much was raised, but suffice to say the school is humbled by the generosity of those that attended! Thank you to Donna Sharp and her team for all their hard work.
School Leadership and Management
The Cathedral Grammar School is a special place, and the Parent Survey carried out earlier this year identified a number of aspects that make it special and that are important to our school community, including (in no particular order):
Academic Excellence and the High Standard of Teaching,
Values Programme,
Anglican Ethos,
Sports, Music and Co-Curricula Programmes,
Student Welfare and Development,
Single Sex Education in a Co-Education Environment (Year 4-8),
Our Blueprint for the Future,
Small size meaning individualised attention for our students.
In terms of the management of the school, we have always defined our school leaders by the age and gender of the students they deal with (e.g. Head of Girls’ School, Head of Boys’ School etc). This has meant that on occasions we have become too ‘siloed’ as a school which has impacted on the co-ordination and consistency across the different departments of the school. We work hard to ensure equitable access to learning support, extension (gifted and talented) programmes, sporting and cultural opportunities and innovative new programmes.
In Term 2 of this year, I started a review of the leadership structure in the school, with the main focus being “In terms of school leadership, how do we make the most important things the most important things?”
As a result of this review, I am announcing that from the beginning of Term 4, a new leadership structure will be introduced to the school.

This new structure sees the following changes:
1. The establishment of three Deputy Head positions with a focus on the things that were listed earlier as important and special to us as a school:
Deputy Head, Achievement and Innovation – with a focus on maintaining high academic standards and student achievement across the whole school as well as our new Blueprint for the future.
Deputy Head, Student Welfare and Development – with a focus on continu-ing to ensure that all students are treated as individuals, that programmes are in place to meet all of their needs, and that the unique identities of the different parts of the school (i.e. Junior / Boys’ / Girls’ Schools are main-tained and enhanced, with more consistency.
Deputy Head, Co-Curricula – with a focus on the schools values pro-gramme, ensuring that our Anglican identity is enhanced, and the manage-ment and on-going development of our Music and Sports programme to the very highest level.
2. To enable this to happen, the following positions are disestablished:
Head of Girls’ School
Head of Boys’ School
Head of Innovation and Development
3. The introduction of the following positions of extra responsibility in the school:
Dean of Boys’ School
Dean of Girls School
Registrar / EA
Team Leader, Learning Support
Team Leader, Extension Programmes
Team Leader, e-Learning
The structure around the Pre-School is unaffected by these changes.
All of these changes are cost neutral to the school.

I am pleased to announce that the following appointments have been made (to commence at the start of Term 4, 2013):
Deputy Head, Student Welfare and Development – Dr Averil Worner
Deputy Head, Co-Curricula – Miss Penny Tattershaw
Deputy Head, Achievement and Innovation – Ms Nicola Church
Registrar / EA – Mrs Linda Marsh
In addition, the following staff remain in their current positions;
Head of Pre-School – Mrs Adrienne Winnicott
Head of Junior School – Mrs Carole Wright
Chaplain – Rev Bob Tremewan
IT Manager – Mr Matt Naera

HoD Prep School Sport – Mr Des Matai

Other positions will be filled from within the school over the remainder of this term.
Prior to the implementation of the new structure in Term 4, more detail will be provided to ensure all members of the school community will be clear about the points of contact regarding your child.
We believe that these changes will bring great benefit to the school as a whole and to your child. Please contact me know if you have any further queries.
School Buildings
With the fabulous refurbishment of the Specialist Block completed, our attention now turns to the next stage of our redevelopment. I know that Junior School parents especially are keen to know when work will start on a new Junior School – something that is a priority for us all!
The Board is spending considerable time ensuring that the construction of new buildings sets the school up for the next 100 years, and we hope to be in a position to announce the process and time frames following the next board meeting on 21 August.

What is Gentleness?
Gentleness is acting and speaking in a kind,
considerate way. It is using self-control, in
order not to hurt or offend anyone. You can
be gentle with people and animals in the way
you touch them and the way you speak to
them, You handle things carefully so they
will not break or be hurt. When you think
gentle thoughts, it makes the world a safer,
gentler place.
Congratulations!
You are practising Gentleness when you…
Make it safe for people and animals to be around you
Touch carefully
Speak with a soft voice
Express your feelings peacefully
Take time out when you don’t feel gentle
Think gentle thoughts that make you smile inside
OUR CATHEDRAL!
It was a joyous and uplifting moment at Sunday morning’s service when Acting Dean Lynda Patterson uttered the words: ‘Welcome to the Transitional Cathedral – and I’ve been waiting a long time to say that!’
The building is an extraordinary space and a wonderful statement of hope for the city and our own school community. We are looking forward to returning ‘home’ with several services and events at the Cathedral planned for the remainder of the year.
Meanwhile, Cathedral services return to normal from this Sunday, 11 August:
8.00am Holy Communion
10.00am Choral Eucharist
5.00pm Evensong.

Our Inquiry on Healthy Living has begun well. We are asking the children to bring in a photo of themselves as a baby that can be stapled to our display board. As part of this Inquiry we have Josh Grimaldi coming to do a presentation tomorrow morning at 11am in the hall in the specialist block. Children who don’t usually come on Wednesday's are welcome to attend this show. Our thanks to Virinia Lurhrs for arranging this for us.
Congratulations to the Friends Association for their very successful evening on Saturday. Thank you to the parents who supported this even. Our Pre-School children will benefit from this with the re-development of part of our playground.
A very big thank you to Lily and Kate Newton’s dad Tom, who, with Jake’s help , has made us some fantastic road signs for our playground. The children are very excited about them.
We welcome Emily Street, our student from the Rangi Ruru College of Early Childhood Education, who is on placement with us for four weeks. We hope that she will enjoy her time with us.
We have a parent morning tea on Tuesday next week at 10am and hope that many of you will be able to attend.
A reminder of our Open Day on Wednesday next week. Please encourage anyone you know who may be interested to come.
Moral Citizens: Ana Crainic and Sammy O’Connell were great models of friendliness and received “Huggie Bear” last week.

Dear Parents,
Clubs have now commenced for the term. I have reminded the children that they have signed a contract to commit to commendable behaviour during their club or sporting activities. At the end of school, some manners seem to get a little stretched but they are not allowed to ruin the enjoya-ble of others. We appreciate your support in this matter.
Please remember that you are welcome to join us for our Junior Assembly on Fridays at 2.15. This week, J1S, J2P and J3E will be performing.
Encouraging Enterprising Spirits: We continue to enjoy the presentations given by pupils on their dinosaur topics. This is an opportunity for the children to use their speaking skills to share their knowledge with their peers. Last week, Andrew Welsh gave us a great start full of information that he had researched. Then Jack Slaughter gave a beautifully organized speech without resorting to notes. He kept to the topic and answered questions confidently about triceratops. This morning, Charles Beale and Duncan Fletcher, two of our 'in-house' experts, will present their ideas.
Encouraging Moral Citizens: Our Virtue this week is "Gentleness". With good modelling from both home and school, we want our children to show empathy for others in their actions, not just physically but with the words they use too. Often little ones have no idea of the impact that they can have on others and need prompting to consider if that is how they would like to be treated. Please do not be distressed when your dear soul demonstrates poor judgement. It is a learning process that we have to encourage!
Encouraging Engaged Thinkers: We were delighted on Monday to congratulate Edmund Davis on his success in a Chess competition. Chess is a wonderful game for developing strategic thinking.

It has been a momentous week in the history of the Boys’ School. On Sunday, our choristers – the very foundation of our school’s being – moved home. It’s a brand new, vast and airy home, filled with heavenly light and love.
From the Boys’ School, we offer our heartfelt congratulations and prayers to our Warden, Bishop Victoria Matthews, Acting Dean Lynda Patterson, Administrator Chris Oldham, and the Cathedral chapter and staff whose determination and drive, patience, impatience and perseverance have made the Transitional Cathedral a reality. It is an extraordinary moment in the shared heritage of our church, our school and our city, a moment akin to the construction of our first, much loved and not forgotten Cathedral in the Square 130 years ago.
We look forward to our renewing our relationships with old friends, and to coming together in worship and celebration as Cathedral and school in this new place, God’s new place – home again.
Congratulations to our seventeen choristers who sang that first service in the new Transitional Ca-thedral: Isiah Atherton, Alex Rowe, Jono Stewart (8GB); Humphrey Bullen, William Pegg (8EB); Benedict Sullivan (7SB); Nathanael Wain (7MB); Albert Bell, Andrew Garbett, Kane Jones, Dea-con McClusky, William Simcock (6B); Joshua Erasmus, Damian Fraser, Oscar Parkes, Rupert Pett and William Rowe-Lucas (5B).

Girls’ Prep School We look forward to welcoming many of you and your whanau to the Prep School Learning Cele-bration tomorrow. It will be largely business as usual, with the opportunity for your daughter to share her learning with you, and offer a guided tour of the new Specialist Block. You are welcome into all rooms – please just come in!
Independent School Netball
On Sunday 4th August Maddy Finch, Lucy Costelloe and Emily Stewart (8G) represented the Inde-pendent School Zone (and The Cathedral Grammar School!) in a tournament in Ashburton. The team won overall and secured a trophy. Please see Grammarnet for separate article.
Canterbury hockey representatives
We congratulate Emma Faulkner (6G) who has been named as the goalkeeper in the Canterbury Primary Girls Training team, and Ella Sharp (6G) who has been named as a non-travelling reserve in the same team. Congratulations to you both!
Future Problem Solving
This pilot programme is well underway, with years 5 and 6 teams working on the 2013 topic of “The Robotic Age”. The girls report high levels of enjoyment as they develop their critical thinking skills, and build toward developing competitive teams for 2014. The value of this programme, and potential across the Prep Schools is becoming apparent.
Independent Schools Winter Tournament
We wish our Year 4-8 netball players, and year 5 and 6 hockey players, the very best for these competitions this Thursday. We thank in advance those parents who are helping with transport and/or supervising at these events. We ask that all girls bring a packed lunch on that day – we will not have access to the tuckshop.
Canterbury Chess Tournament
We wish Rebecca Harris (8G), Sarah Liddell (7G), Charlotte Roberts (7G) and Winifred Davis (5G), all the very best for this competition tomorrow and thank those families who are providing transport and supervising at this event.
Other successes
I always like to hear from families whose girls have competed well, or achieved in a discipline out-side the school so that we may celebrate their success. An email to confirm this will help me be accurate and timely!
