APOSTROPHESWhen do we use apostrophes?

To mark shortened phrases called contractions.- Contractions are used in modern speech and in INFORMAL writing.- Contractions show where letters have been left out.e.g. I am = I’m Would not = Wouldn’t

Apostrophes are also used with nouns to show possession or ownership.

THE 7 GOLDEN RULES OF POSSESSION

Rule 1:The possessive of singular nouns (one person, place or thing) is formed by adding an apostrophe and s. Examples: - Harry’s lunch = the lunch belongs to Harry

- The woman’s bag = the bag belongs to the woman

- The Leprechaun's gold = the gold belongs to the Leprechaun

Rule 2:To show ownership of regular plural nouns, just add an apostrophe.

ExampleGirls – girls’Students – students’

Rule 3:The possessive of irregular plural nouns (not ending in s) is formed by adding an apostrophe and s. Do not change the spelling of the original word.

Examples:Women – women’sMen – men’sChildren – children’s

Rule 4:To make the possessive of proper nouns of one syllable which end in s, add an apostrophe and s.

Example:Jones’s bakeryGus’s bikeParis’s famous cafes

Rule 5: When there are several owners of the same thing, only the last one mentioned gets an apostrophe.

Examples:Anna and Jeremy’s dog.Clare and Catherine’s boutique.

Rule 7:In compound words, add the apostrophe to the last word.Note: compound words are two or more words joined together to make one new word.

Example: son-in-law’s house seahorse’s habitat

YOU DO ACTIVITY:In small groups create a seven sentence

paragraph/narrative on the topic of camping. Each sentence must include an apostrophe

using one of the seven rules. By the end your group’s paragraph, you should have

incorporated all seven rules. Contractions must also be included.
