ATTENDANCE 683-6192

Good attendance at school is extremely important; regular attendance and punctuality are essential to school achievement. Absences, for any reason, result in lost educational experiences. Students who have regular attendance show self-discipline, learn more, and are better prepared for future employment. The primary responsibility for attending school rests with the student. ABSENCES State law and school board policy both recognize that regular attendance is the basis of success in the classroom. Students who miss class lose the participation part of a teacher’s grading policy, thus adversely affecting the final grade. Likewise, the school will take legal and/or disciplinary actions if a student is truant, unexcused absent, or tardy. On the day of return from an absence students must obtain an Admit Slip from the Attendance Office. Parents may excuse students through several means with use of family Access being highly encouraged. The Attendance Office can also be notified via:

A. A note or doctor/Dental office slip B. A phone call/voice mail to 253.683.6192

Page 10: Graham-Kapowsin High School - Bethel School Districtmedia.bethelsd.org/.../gkhs/pdf/GK_Handbook_07-08.pdf2007-08 STUDENT HANDBOOK Graham-Kapowsin High School Jennifer Bethman PRINCIPAL

C. E-mail to [email protected] D. A fax to 253.683.6198 E. An in-person visit

Students requesting an early release from school must checkout at the Attendance Office before leaving campus. Early dismissals can be expedited if the student brings a note to the Attendance Office before the start of school for an early dismissal slip. Please indicate if the student is authorized to drive themselves or specify who will be picking them up. ANYONE PICKING UP A STUDENT WILL NEED TO SHOW PICTURE ID BEFORE THEY CAN SIGN A STUDENT OUT. Because GKHS is a closed campus, students are not allowed to leave campus unless signed out by a parent/guardian. Any student participating in an activity shall be expected to attend and participate in all classes on the day of the scheduled activity. On any school day, students must be in attendance at least one half day to be eligible to participate in practice or school related activity. Students will be considered UNEXCUSED ABSENT if no contact has been made between the parent and the school during the time of the absence and if the student fails to bring in a parent note within two school days upon their return. TARDINESS In order to maximize instructional time you are expected to be in your seat before the tardy bell rings. If you arrive to class less than five minutes after the tardy bell, you will be considered tardy; if you arrive more than five minutes after the bell, you will receive an unauthorized absence. Teachers may apply academic consequences for tardiness. Oversleeping is not a valid excuse for coming in late and will not be accepted. DISCREPANCIES Discrepancies in attendance are best resolved between the student and teacher. Errors can easily be corrected based upon a note/e-mail from the teacher to the Attendance Office. CLOSED CAMPUS GKHS is a closed campus. Once students arrive at school, they are to remain on campus until school is officially dismissed. All students must check in an out of the Attendance Office when arriving or leaving campus at times other than the official starting and dismissal times of the school day. STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

STUDENT RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES All students at GKHS are expected to know and abide by the rules and expectations of the school and the school district as outlined in this school planner and in the district’s Student Rights and Responsibilities pamphlet. Students will be held accountable for the rules outlined; claiming to not know about a rule does not excuse a student from the consequence. DISCIPLINE All students are responsible for their own behavior and actions at school and will be held accountable for the rules and expectations as set forth in this planner and the Bethel School District Board Policy #3240 and the Student Rights and Responsibilities pamphlet. Violations of school rules at school, at school-sponsored activities, or in areas under school jurisdiction will be dealt with as follows: PROGRESSIVE DISCIPLINE Progressive discipline is a term used to describe the procedures that are followed whereby a student who has repeated offenses at school is disciplined more severely for each new offense. Likewise, progressive discipline means that a student who has committed an offense in one category above may be disciplined at the second step if he/she commits an offense in another category. FIREARMS It is unlawful for any student to carry onto any school premises, school provided transportation, or areas with facilities being used exclusively by public school any firearm or weapon. Students who violate the firearm policy will be expelled from school for a minimum of one calendar year in accordance with RDW 28A.600.420. Parents must be notified of the imposition of the expulsion and their right to hearing and appeal. The principal or designee shall notify appropriate law enforcement personnel of known or suspected violations of the firearms policy. (Policy 3249) A Drug Enforcement Dog will periodically be used to search GKHS facilities.

15

CHEATING Cheating is by definition an action done by a student to supply work for another student, or turn in work, use work, or rely on work that is not his/her own other than in circumstances clearly understood to involve collaborative or group learning. The judgment of the teacher or staff member who discovers cheating is final. In the first instance of cheating, the student will receive an F grade for the work involved and receive disciplinary action along with a parent conference. Subsequent cheating will result in progressive disciplinary action including loss of credit for course. ACADEMIC NON-PERFORMANCE GKHS emphasizes the importance of learning. Improving performance requires effort and cooperation at all levels. Disciplinary action may occur to a student for academic non-performance, which may include one of the following:

• Failure to demonstrate consistent on task behavior • Failure to extend sufficient effort to progress in subject matter • Failure to turn in daily assignments on a consistent basis • Failure to attend school on a regular basis

FIGHTING Fighting is defined as any confrontation, touching, scuffing, “stepping up,” or fisticuffs done to intimidate, subdue, or injure another person. At GKHS, any student engaged in fighting for whatever reason will be suspended. Also, any horseplay, mock fighting, or instigation of fighting may result in suspension. Watching or supporting a fight will result in a suspension. HARASSMENT, BULLYING, AND HAZING Harassment and bullying are defined as unwanted putting down, pestering, taunting, touching, following, inappropriately joking about, looking at, or otherwise making another individual feel threatened or uncomfortable. Hazing is defined as doing things to or making another person do things as part of an initiation, to make him/her look silly or stupid, single him/her out, or otherwise subject him/her to ridicule or degradation by others. Gestures, looks, and voice intonation that are intended to disrupt, put down, show aggression, or harass are not permitted. In accordance with Bethel School District Board Policy #3207, any student engaged in harassment, bullying, intimidation or hazing for whatever reason will be suspended or expelled. DISPLAYS OF AFFECTION School is not the place for excessive, overt displays of affections, such displays are prohibited and subject to disciplinary action. The general rule of thumb is that behavior at school should mirror that of a professional job site. Displays of Affection could also be considered an act of harassment.

Students who use such language will be subject to disciplinary action. BUS CONDUCT School bus transportation is provided to students for their convenience and safety. Students who disrupt or jeopardize the safety of bus transportation are subject to discipline and/or revocation of bus-riding privileges. Additionally, bus loading areas, bus stops, and areas around them are under the jurisdiction of the school, and disruption or misconduct by students there may result in intervention by the school. ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT Electronic devices such as radios, walkman-type players, MP3 players, i-pods, tape decks, beepers, pagers, laser pointer, walkie-talkies, cellular telephones, electronic toys/games, calculators with games, portable DVD players and other assorted personal electronic devices are not permitted at school.
