Two students this week deserve special mention. Congrats and well done to Summer
Loadsman from 4/5SL who was invited to go to Melbourne over the long weekend to
attend an intense choral workshop with Deb Cheetham and the Short Black Opera
Company. This fantastic opportunity was only offered to a small number of regional
students and we are very proud of our talented Summer. This year, participants also had
the opportunity to work with industry legend Archie Roach, and that is Summer pictured
up the front in a media release. We are sure Summer had an exciting weekend!
Congratulations and well done also to Jesse McGarvie from 5/6KG. Jesse was in Wollongong
last week as a member of the North Coast PSSA Boys Hockey team. After an impressive
week of games, Jesse has been selected in the State PSSA team to play in Cairns early next
term. This is a great accomplishment for Jesse.
We are very proud of both of these students!
Students of Special Mention
This Friday 17th June, we are holding a Treats Day at recess on both campuses as a P & C Fundraiser.
Kindergarten are asked to please provide some treats at Infants, and Years 4 and 5 are asked to supply
some goodies for the Primary.
To explain a Treats Day, which have proven extremely popular in past years, the children from a
nominated grade are asked to bring in a plate of goodies for sale at recess to be purchased by all
students in all grades. Popular items include small cakes, decorated biscuits, slices, chocolate crackles,
and toffees. Goodies are priced from 20c to $1 and spread out so the children can pick a couple of
things each. When the children take in the plate in the morning it can be given to the canteen, where it
will be cut and sliced etc. If you send a container you wish returned, please clearly mark it with your
child’s name and class.
If your child wishes a yummy recess on Friday, please remember to send in some money to spend.
Treats Day this Friday!
Dear Parents and Carers,
This weekend was a bonus with the weather remaining relatively rain free, a little blowy and cool yet still
pleasant. Today we hope to enjoy our annual school Athletics Carnival with all students having the
opportunity to compete in the various events. The preliminary field events were undertaken at school
earlier in the term with the finals being undertaken at today’s carnival.
At tonight’s P & C meeting Mr Avery will be discussing our schools road transport access and providing
options that we may wish to utilise for improvement. It is never easy for parents to find parking drop
off and pick up spots especially with inclement weather. There are possible solutions upon the horizon.
Mr Avery will also be talking about the bike pathways and tracks which have allowed our students safer
access as they ride to school. I hope you can find some time to attend this meeting. It starts at 7.00pm
sharp and is usually finished by 8.15pm
Congratulations to Jessie McGarvie who was selected in the State Boys PSSA Hockey team. A positive
recognition of talent and attitude which all goes well for our school team in their up and coming matches.
One of our major school foci is Reading. During last week I was speaking to the Primary assembly and
asked the children to indicate if they were currently reading a novel. It was a disappointing response
with around 33% indicating they were. Our current millennium generation is a visual screen generation
which is missing the creative connection with a story that one is reading. Instead, they are allowing
others to create their impressions of books etc on the wide screen. I do hope families will find time to
stop everything and read for ten to fifteen minutes per night. You only become a reader if you read.
I hope you have a pleasant week.

From the Principal
Although there was a bit of early drizzle and the grounds were damp underfoot, our Athletics Carnival for all students
in Years 2-6 went ahead today in between intermittent showers. At time of going to print, there were no results to
report, so we will have a full wrap-up in next week’s newsletter.
Athletics Carnival
Brief But Important
* Only 10 sleeps until some excited children (and parents) head to Brisbane for our Disney On Ice Bustrip. Final
itineraries issued to all attending last week. Please ensure all payments are made by this Thursday 16th June.
Last Thursday the GPS Green Team were invited to join Dirt Girl, Scrap Boy and Costa at the opening of the Clarence
Valley Environmental Learning Facility (or ELF for short!). The Green Team were the first kids to try out the facility.
They also discussed environmental issues with Dirt Girl and Scrap Boy and planted the new gardens with Costa. Once
again, the Green Team impressed everyone with their enthusiasm, knowledge and manners!

Planning is well underway for Kindergarten 2017, with the Kinder Kritters Orientation program
commencing in early Term 3. If there are any little brothers and sisters, friends, or cousins who are
starting “big school” next year, please call in to get forms as soon as possible so that they can be a part
of this program. Please spread the word to friends and neighbours who may have pre-schoolers starting
with us next year.
