As a graphic designer I do lot of creative jobs which requires value addition. However, I outsource printing. I wanted to set up a screen printing unit. Hence while searching on the net, I encountered Grafica’s nano print video. At the same time out of curiosity I also sailed through their entire website and amazed to see so much information about screen printing, technical articles, experiences of screen printers involved in a wide range of applications.

So, for the last 1 ½ year I have been closely observing DMI’s activities by regularly visiting Grafica’s website. I also read Grafica News online. It did not take much time for me to understand the mission of Bhargav Mistry; how much time he is spending for the industry; how much research and R&D he is doing and what effort he is putting in to accomplish his mission. It is all reflected in the huge photo library of DMI’s workshops and Grafica News and Grafica website. In India there is a bad image about screen printing although the real screen printing is an art and it is a vast field. I feel Bhargav has taken a task of giving a professional image to screen printing. I believe screen printing is an evergreen printing process and he is making its foundation very strong. It is amazing to know that a machine manufacturer is having so much indepth knowledge and engaged in spreading it to others

Few months ago, I was greatly surprised when I received a sketchy photo-frame of my DMI's Workshop from Chandra Shaker of Chandra Shaker Design Solutions, Secunderabad.

I was under the impression that he must have attended one of my DMI workshops. Upon a courtesy visit of our Grafica News editor, Chandra Shaker revealed that he had never attended DMI's workshop nor did he meet me personally.

So, our editor asked him as to what

motivated him to send me the photoframe of my DMI workshop? Read his statements published below. I really admire him for such a good will gesture, because the person, who had never attended my workshop, has greatly appreciated our educational activity by sending a photoframe of my workshop. Over and above he has also sent me a book of collection of Cartoons. He is not even Grafica's customer. So, I feel proud, inspired and touched by his actions. “Thank you Chandra Shaker for your inspiring goodwill gesture and appreciation!”

Meanwhile, my friend, Narendra P of Pragati Offset shares his views about advanced screen printing, its

application and its benefit to commercial printers. We especially thought of rewriting his success story in screen printing after receiving a fantastic Pragati Calendar'13. I have been receiving their Calendar for the last couple of years.

I draw your attention to an interesting success story of Lakshmi Stickers who has immensely benefitted from our

nano-series machines.

Read story on 'the other side of printer'. It is all about how printers are taking time out to engage in extra professional activities to make life an interesting game not a stressful one. I congratulate Natu Tandel of Shanti Graphics, Surat, who has successfully held his Solo Painting exhibition in Mumbai recently.

Meanwhile, let us welcome Monsoon'13 with a big bang!

Bhargav Mistry

by conducting DMI workshops. I have never come across a person like Bhargav who is simply concerned about educating screen printers. Even I read one of his technical articles on UV in which he has explained the UV technology in a simple language. I have understood clearly what is his mission, purpose, etc? Even without interacting or meeting him or attending DMI workshop, I have acquired immense knowledge and that has inspired me to invest in Grafica machine although I had to postpone my decision for a while. About myself:After abandoning my ICWA midway, I did diploma in multimedia and 3D animation in 1995-96. I took up graphic designing in 1998 in a big way. Now my design studio is located on prominent design and printing hub at Secunderabad. My clientele include: Real estate, Pharma, IT companies, and general customers.

First of all let me clarify that I have never attended DMI’s workshops nor I have met DMI’s Director Bhargav Mistry. I am not even customer of Grafica. However, the reason for presenting the sketch photo-frame of Bhargav conducting DMI Workshop (Downloaded from Grafica Website) was to appreciate and complement him for his extra ordinary contribution for the overall development of screen printing through his DMI workshops.

Located in Dubai, Burj Khalifa is claimed to be Tallest building in the

world with over 828 m and more than 160 floors.

Fashion Arts, Ludhiana, has taken a bold step towards automation by investing in Grafica’s nano-prinTex (7 colour/ 10 palette), along with two nano-flashTex. The company has also installed nano-screen maker 5-in-1, nano-sharpener and nano-print. Fashion Arts undertakes direct to garment printing on men’s/ ladies’/kids wear, T-shirts, jackets, jeans and woolen garments on job work basis. Brijmohan Sood, founder of Fashion Arts, explains how manual screen printing was a curse and created a vicious circle of problems. And his son Vikram Sood adds: “We wanted to cut down labour cost and reduce ink consumption. In manual, ink consumption was too high. That is because due to uneven hand-operated squeegee pressure, ink deposition was in excess of what is actually required. To overcome all these problems, we had to switch over to automation quickly.” “The performance of nano-prinTex is excellent as it delivers quality prints with uninterrupted production. Moreover, we also receive constant technical support from Grafica, that’s all what we wanted,” he adds.

Highlighting some of the most tangible benefits of automation, he says: “Now with Grafica’s nano-prinTex, vis-à-vis automation, we have succeeded in improving quality with registration accuracy. We are also perfectly reproducing photorealistic images with good hand-feel effect which was next to impossible on manual set up. Moreover, we have brought down ink consumption.” Emphasizing the importance of screen, Kuldeep Singh, incharge of marketing explains: “Installing Grafica’s screen maker 5-in-1 was a big advantage as we are able to make better screen which is

necessary especially for photo realistic printing. It really makes big difference in the quality of printing.” Fashion Arts was founded in 1990 by Brijmohan Sood. Fashion Arts undertakes direct to garment printing and embroidery on job work basis. “There is a growing trend of combining screen printing and embroidery,” says Brijmohan Sood, a veteran garment printer. His company caters to leading brands, domestic and export market. The company has an in-house design studio with three designers. Their printing facilities are spread over 40,000 sq.ft.

Bengaluru based Gowri Laminators has recently forayed into lucrative value addition business by investing in Grafica's Nano-Premier League plus (NPL plus).

“With NPL+ set up we are cost effectively and efficiently undertaking spot UV and other value addition service on job work basis, besides printing our creative jobs,” says T S Nagaraj, proprietor of Gowri Laminators.

The company's entry into screen printing was to make their post press facility a complete unit, offering value addition/high quality print finishing service under one building. Gowri Laminators was set up in 1982 by

Nagaraj. Gowri Laminators offers complete post press services to packaging and commercial printers in Bengaluru and throughout the state of Karnataka. Their post press facility -- comprising screen printing,

thermal, document lamination and wiro / spiral, comb binding and shrink wrapping – is housed at their 6000 sq.ft multi-storey complex.

integral part of Pragati's printing business,” asserts Narendra. Interview: What's so special about Pragati Calendar 2013? Theme: Measuring of Time – then and now Size: 18” x 28”Paper: Sappi Fine Art CardQuantity: 3000 Process: Offset printing followed by print finishing/value addition through screen printing (UV special effects: Crystal UV, embossing, lens effect on sheets, texture, gloss and matt, abrasive (rough),etc and then foil stamping. Design was perfectly blended with UV effects – to give out of the world experience. We have been producing our promotional calendar for the last

10-15 years which we distribute to our clients and associates. For the last couple of years, we have been producing our calendars embellished with various UV special effects. What embeds a good calendar? A calendar could be attractive and outstanding only if it encompasses:a) Good theme, b) Appealing designs c) Excellent print production

with colour accuracy, d) Fine print finishing with

judicious and creative use of various UV special effects.

There is a total transformation when you compare this special calendar with just normal offset printed version as there is highly tactile touch and feel effect on the

latter. In fact the Calendar itself is a reflection of our quality and what we can offer to our customers by transforming an ordinary job into extra ordinary print. That is the sole objective of producing innovative calendar every year. Why did you adopt screen printing process? We adopted screen printing initially just to offer spot UV; we then started offering texture, rough and matt effects; and later we started using raised UV effects. Our knowledge was limited only to that extent. However, following my visit to DMI institute at Grafica, I was stunned to see some fantastic screen printed samples with

These days “embellishment” has been the buzzword of P. Narendra of Pragati Offset Pvt. Ltd / Pragati Pack (India) Pvt. Ltd, Hyderabad. As always, Pragati's Calendar '2013' too is full of charming embellishments. The offset printed calendar was finely print finished using advanced screen printing process techniques. It all started when he saw an array of highly creative screen printed samples at DMI's library, “embellished” with various UV special effects – crystal UV, 3D reflective UV, wrinkle, glitter, etc. These samples had really caught his imagination and he pondered for a while: “These kinds of highly creative jobs can also be printed in India?” “Today, screen printing is an

various other UV special effects presented by Bhargav Mistry. I appreciated it, I learnt the trick, I applied it and that is how it should be. Since then we have been incorporating reflective, glitter, crystal UV and many other GenNext special effects. Moreover, we have been using screen printing for gluing on blister packaging which is done after all the printing and post press work is finished. There is no other choice than screen printing. Lot of offset printers outsource screen printing for print finishing. So, why did you set up an inhouse screen printing unit? Unlike Mumbai where you have plenty of quality post press units including screen printers offering spot UV service, here in Hyderabad those days we did not have such facility. Although setting up an inhouse screen printing unit at that time was a dire necessity, today it has turned out to be a

great advantage to offer value addition with freedom. Today screen printing contributes 8-10% to our total revenue. Your views about screen printing process: What is on the packaging is important for first time buyers andWhat is in the packaging is important for repeat buyers. So, screen printing is the only way to add value to offset printed commercial and packaging jobs, there is no other choice. E.g. Application of Abrasive or texture UV. The purpose of such embellishment is to get the eyeball of customers engaged fully for 5 more seconds on the product. He not only sees but also feels the tactile effect. Value addition is all about stirring the five senses of the customers. What are the challenges in value addition work?Value addition requires complete pre-press knowledge and mastery in screen printing. Please recall your DMI experience:As I said, following my visit to DMI where I was accustomed to application of various UV special effects, I had also deputed our team to DMI workshop. They had excellent training experience. Back

home they were highly motivated, and we gave them freedom to explore. We were also able to improve quality of screen making as a result quality of our print finishing sharpened further. We are grateful to DMI for imparting such a useful knowledge. It really made a big difference. What's your take on education?Education is very important in any industry. Printers invest millions of rupees in technology but spend little on education and training of their team. 'Lack of skill' what is killing the industry including printing. 50 years of Pragati – What's your memorable moment?Crossing every border of success is memorable to us, but the Sappi 2006 award has been the greatest moment in our 50 years' history. We followed it up by winning again in 2008 and 2010. I feel it is the team work which wins at the end of the day.

What's the secret of Pragati's success?Passion to excel! And our success mantra has been: Efficiency, Quality and Technology. I think same principle should apply to other printers as well.

About Pragati: Established in 1962 Pragati Group (Pragati Offset and Pragati Pack) covers the full gamut of printing in commercial and packaging segment. Pragati, an ISO 9001:2000 certified company, has extensive infrastructure which include: all the latest technology and equipment - an array of advanced multi colour offset presses, Web-fed Flexographic presses, complete pre press and post press facilities including advanced screen printing set up.

Pragati Offset, spread over 90000 sq.ft. employs, 450 people; Pragati Pack (140,000 sq.ft), employs 300 people.

to print wide format jobs. “Grafica's CamShell is truly a workhorse hence we are able to exploit the machine to its fullest potential. The machine is so sturdy that there was no need to make any service call so far. I am sure Grafica will render prompt service as and when required in future.”

Your views about screen printing:“Digital has its own strength and

screen has its own benefits. When it comes to volume production of advertising materials on semi rigid and rigid substrates, screen printing offers best option as it is low cost, faster and there is vibrancy in colours with durability.”

Jyoti Enterprises was established by Pravesh Sharma in 2006. The company offers graphics screen printing service mainly to

telecom majors, FMCGs, retail outlets, shopping malls, textile companies all over India. Their product portfolio include: Outdoor/indoor advertising display boards, Printing on sunboard, sunpack, acrylic, ABS/HIP sheets, stickers and labels, dome stickers, wobblers, wide range of advertising signage, blow moulded flanges, cut-out and display standees.

After a thorough market research, Pravesh Sharma, proprietor of New Delhi based Jyoti Enterprises, came to the conclusion that Grafica's CamShell is the best machine for graphics screen printing.

“We also found that Grafica renders excellent service and technical support. I finalised the deal with Grafica after final evaluation of the machine at an exhibition in New Delhi, although I had other options in the market,” reveals Pravesh.

Jyoti Enterprises has invested in Grafica's CamShell, 40” UV curing machine and Screen Exposing equipment- all housed at their 250 sq.yard printing unit which also houses an array of digital presses

STENCILLING OF SCREEN

For most screen printers the tension of their screens they work with is in the range of

- a fact to which they accommodate

without being really satisfied since it is actually the cause of numerous technical problems they will constantly have to face... too often without even knowing it! A poor tension

is one of the most universal cause of troubles in screen printing, as well graphic, textile or industrial. Understanding the role of the screen, then realizing what the very high tensions of this screen can bring to the improvement of the quality and productivity is more and more essential for the screen printer.

a) THE ADVANTAGES OF PRINTING IN “HIGH TENSIONS”! a lighter distortion of the image,! a higher printing speed,! a much better quality of image, halftone or fine line,! a much more precise register,! more constancy therefore less adjustments, from the beginning to

the end of the printing process,! a much lesser wear of the squeegee blade,! a lower consumption of ink,! a much better control of the quality of the printed image! a faster move from one colour to the next,! a much superior repetitiveness of one printing to its posterior reprint,! therefore and finally, a strongly increased productivity.

b) THE FRAMES ADAPTED TO HIGH TENSIONSBecause of their physical and chemical conception, their weaving and treatment, we therefore have fabrics designed to bear or rather “allow” these much higher tensions (of which I have listed the advantages).A “finalized” screen, before stencilling, is of course a fabric but also a frame. Fabric and frame are apparently two static elements when compared with the dynamic elements that are stretching and printing.In fact, just like the fabric and the changes in its behaviour (the ones we have mentioned), the frame, although called “passive”, is not an element as static as it seems. The pressures generated by the tension of the fabric on the frame modify and determine its parameters of behaviour, therefore manufacturing.Furthermore, there are some types of active frames, the ones mentioned above, the “self-stretching frames” of which “actions” can be determined or modified by their user himself, directly on the frame and not through a tensioning machine.Taking a maximum advantage of the possibilities offered by the very high tensions and the fabrics that allow them, forces to take into account the behaviour of the frames facing these new constraints. Then, advice your manufacturers of frames to supply you with

c) HOW TO STRETCH THE FABRIC WHEN USING “VERY HIGH TENSIONS”Let us note that this absolutely necessary procedure plays in favour of the over-sizing of the screen, if the press allows it, according to the size of the printed image. The farther the printing is performed from the edges of the frame and especially the corners, the more reduced the risks of

10 and 20 Newtons/cm

(even extremely poor tension – less than 10 N/cm)

aluminium frames able to resist to tensions of 30 Newtons/cm or more.

distortion of the image in general, and the local moiré in halftone printing in particular, will be. It is now time to proceed to the stretching. I advice for the “slow” procedure – 3 or 4 steps - that allows a very high tension even if the fabric is very fine. In order to precise and explain, I am listing below the data that are used for the stretching - as a “reference” - a polyester fabric from 20 (50/inch) threads/cm to 120 threads/cm (300/inch), T, TW, PW if possible with a diameter of threads of 34 microns - then on the right, the data applied for a polyester fabric exactly equivalent in diameter and number of threads but LE/HT, PW (low elongation/high tension, woven “all gauze”: PW) :! First stretching: TW = 18 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 23 Newtons/cmPause for the fabric for 15 (min) to 45 minutes (max) :Residual tension: TW = 15 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 19 Newtons/cm! Second stretching: TW = 24 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 29 Newtons/cmPause for the fabric for 15 (min) to 45 minutes (max) :Residual tension: TW = 20 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 24 Newtons/cm! Third stretching: TW = 28 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 34 Newtons/cmPause for the fabric for one night (10 to 15 hours) - if possible :Residual tension: TW = 24 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 30 Newtons/cm! Finally, fourth stretching : TW = 32 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 42 Newtons/cmAfter a pause of one hour, we glue the screen if it is the type “stretched-glued”. A self-stretching screen will also have to rest for 45 minutes to one hr. In any case, it is better to allow these “very fresh” screens a 24 hours stabilization before stencilling.After stencilling, the residual tension will be: TW = 27 Newtons/cm

(Remark: after the pause, degreasing, coating, exposure, washing and drying of the screen, the drop of tension reaches 4 Newtons/cm in the case of “normal” TW and 5 Newtons/cm in the case of LE/TH PW).After a first run of 500 to 1,000 copies, the values of tension will drag to :

TW = 22 Newtons/cm

In time, that is to say after several re-utilizations of the screen for stencilling and printing, and about fifteen days, it is appropriate to consider that the polyester will have reached its quasi-final stabilization point to which it will remain almost all its life :

TW = 20 – 22 Newtons/cm

ON THE OTHER HAND : the self-stretching frames allow the “fifth step”, that is to say after the first run and the next as well, bring the tension back to a level considered optimal for printing:

TW = 24 Newtons/cm

Remark : only the “slow procedure” described above will allow the user to obtain screens stabilized to the required tension, without risks of “explosion” BUT only the selfstretching frames allow to keep it during the entire life of the screen.Finally, it is easy to see right away that the polyesters allow to reach and - especially with the self-stretching frames – to keep a tension superior by 10 Newtons/cm to the tension obtained with traditional fabrics.NB : For the screens between 15/cm (37/inch) and 63/cm (157/inch), it is possible to start at the second step (24- 29 N/cm), saving then one step in tensioning time. But don’t try to reach those tensions in only one or two steps : your screen will literally “explode” either immediately or, after gluing and during the following 12 hours.

LE/PH PW = 36 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 32 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 29/30 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW = 34 Newtons/cm

LE/HT PW

Outcome of automation:Automation is a great boon for me because of following attributes:! There was a cyclical pattern of

success, soon after I deployed

first nano-print plus in 2011. ! Firstly there was dramatic

improvement in the quality of

his stickers, which triggered a

huge demand. So, I was

compelled to buy one more

machine (nano-print) in 2012;! As the demand for stickers (and

clientele) further increased, I

had to buy 3rd machine - nano-

print - in March 2013;! And, along with this progress I

had to expand my business

with two more printing units to

accommodate all printing and

post press machinery. ! Progress unlimited. I could

have never expected the kind of

progress that I have been

witnessing for the last 3 years

when I had manual screen

printing for almost 10 years! In short there are plenty of benefits from automation:1. Automation requires less staff

yet efficiency of my printing unit increased;

2. Big jump in production and quality;

3. Greater comfort to workmen (I strongly believe that it is necessary to provide comfortable working system.)

Why did you choose Grafica's nano-print/plus? Nano Print plus/nano-print machine are sturdy yet easy to operate; our workmen feel comfortable and enjoy working. I had weighed other options. However, I was not at all impressed with machines of other suppliers.

Why are you loyal to brand Grafica? Because I am completely satisfied on account of:-1. Quality of their machine,

performance-wise it has surpassed all my expectations;

2. Excellent technical support; DMI faculty was here to train our people after installation.

3. Machines hardly require any maintenance.

4. By associating with them I also got a broader idea about screen printing technology and its wide application.

manual screen printing. At the same time, Grafica's DMI institute empowered me with much needed advanced screen printing knowledge. With these dual strengths I am able to delight my customers never before,”says Ashok Satawara, proprietor of Parth Design, Ahmedabad.

Ashok Satawara undertakes printing of tags for jeans (on rexine and paper board), wedding card sheets for whole sale market, labels and stickers, PVC advertising balloons in 3-4 colours, non-woven bags, among many other jobs.

“Earlier, I could never think of undertaking these jobs on manual table. I had to work hard just for a peanut profit. Now I can undertake variety, volume and quality jobs with ease. I have also increased my clientele.”

“Grafica is taking care of overall development of even small screen printers like me by offering affordable technology and knowledge. Since I bought nano-print plus, my life and business has changed for the better and I owe a lot to Grafica for all their technical support,” he concludes.

LUDHIANA

With 3 Grafica's Screen Printing machines (1 nano print-plus, 2 nano-print), Ludhiana based Lakshmi Stickers, manufacturer of bicycle stickers, is now wheeling ahead with NON-STOP progress in just 3 years. And this success came only after putting full BREAK on their 10 year old manual screen printing. Founded by Raj Kumar Kanda about 10-years ago, Lakshmi Stickers is a manufacturer of hologram stickers, metal labels, UV printing and leaf printing.

Interview: Why automation? First of all, these days the look of the cycles for all segment has turned to be very trendy and fancy, requiring lot of designer decals and stickers perfectly to adorn the chic bicycles. So the onus is on sticker printers to produce striking stickers with precision quality which was not possible on manual screen printing. Moreover, manual screen printing was a bane to my printing business because of the following reasons: 1. Curse to workmen as they used

to experience pain on shoulders.

2. High cost of labour as manual screen printing requires more workmen.

3. Low production 4. Quality was not upto the mark 5. No sign of growth.
