here’s how the company grew from its humble beginnings to the national corporation that it is today.

Graffiti was becoming more prolific in Australia, particularly in Melbourne, with the development of mobile paint and texta application aids and a culture of youth who had less respect than previous generations. Plus, graffiti become a quick and cheap way for political organisations to make a point that was seen by many, and gained media exposure.

A clever Melbourne inventor named Peter Oshannessy saw a growing need to find ways to remove spray paint from masonry substrates. It was unique compared to brush applied paint in terms of how it penetrated deep into substrates. he developed a truly unique 3-stage chemical extraction process that wasn’t used anywhere in the world. It was able to achieve results previously not possible, and in quick time.

Pressurised water equipment worked well when reliable, but wear and the cost of maintenance were becoming issues affecting service delivery. Peter set up test rigs with equipment sourced from all over the world to develop an easier-to-maintain system. an Italian-made pressure pump was determined to be the best for flow rate, pressure and reliability and was imported for use.

Peter was keen for a change and sold the business to Rod and Maureen Mackenzie. Rod had a background in sales and business management and saw the potential in the industry and relocated the business to Wattle Glen. With Maureen running the office and Rod out in the field, the business quickly grew by expanding its range of services.

chemical process developed to chemically neutralise acid carbon after a fire and restore masonry surfaces in buildings, very popular with insurance companies.

1988

Melbourne was becoming a patch-work quilt, as the only means of covering graffiti was to paint it out. Not a popular option particularly on heritage-listed buildings.

1973Paint companies around the world developed harder setting spray paint with better adhesion as the technology increased in popularity in the building and automotive industries for touch-ups. This made graffiti harder to remove without substrate defacement, so more advanced chemical compositions with finer grade chemicals were required. As demand grew, Peter struggled to employ staff able to perform the work because of the complexity of the chemical knowledge required. The business remained a one-man operation.

The technology and level of control required to deliver the pressurised water precisely to the working surface for perfect results was highly critical in the quality process. Rod continually tested and refined the equipment with many significant industry breakthroughs to combat environmental and safety challenges. Maintenance and upkeep was still very onerous, and consumed most weekends so that the equipment was right for the next week’s work.

The Graffiti eaters were one of the first 20 companies in australia to invest in mobile phone technology, and although a 1-minute call cost close to $4.00 the service was a hit with clients. That meant The Graffiti Eaters could be onsite quicker to remove offensive graffiti. Rod was working 7 days a week and very long days trying to keep up with demand, and was involved in a car accident caused by fatigue which provided a wake-up call.

Two additional vehicles were built and staff employed to service clients. The mobile phones enabled staff to call Rod for technical advice and overcome some of the technical complexity issues.

A 3rd family member, Rod’s daughter Sharon, joined the company to assist Maureen in the office. The investment in chemical testing was expanded and solutions were found to successfully remove graffiti without trace from sandstone, limestone and granite surfaces. A factory was purchased in Bundoora to house vehicles, materials and the office as the company out-grew Rod’s home.

1991

1992

Advanced technology developed to remove graffiti paint from Colorbond sheets.

The Graffiti Eaters win a tender with ETSA Corporation to look after all their assets in the whole of SA, a contract which is still held today.

1994 1995

A 4th family member, Rod’s son Mark, joined the company after completing his degree in Mechanical Engineering at RMIT. for his final year thesis he investigated ‘the removal of surface deposits from hard surfaces’ and looked at laser technology and advanced chemistry to remove paint and graffiti. Anti-Graffiti Coatings to protect buildings prior to being hit with graffiti, thus making them easier to clean, were manufactured, trialled and tested behind closed doors.

The vehicle was based on a 4.5 tonne truck chassis and offered unparalleled speed in the field, cutting graffiti removal times by 45% while at the same time providing a one-stop-shop for everything needed for pressure cleaning, stain removal and painting with onboard paint colour-matching systems.

1994

Demand in Adelaide saw the company open its first interstate office with the appointment of Rick Bleasdale as State Manager. Rick is still with the company today. Demand quickly grew, with more vehicles and trained technicians required.

Graffiti removal Gone wronginexperienced companies can permanently scar your building

If you are not careful with the company you select to remove your graffiti problem you could end up with an

even more expensive problem to repair.

Unfortunately, as this industry is not regulated there are some unscrupulous ‘graffiti removers’ performing unacceptable work as seen in the images above.

If graffiti is incorrectly removed, then you may also have ongoing issues with salt deposits, rising damp and premature brick crumbling, and in the worst circumstances, structural failure.

When graffiti is sprayed onto your masonry walls (brick, concrete, sandstone and granite) it penetrates and soaks deep into the surface, like ink into paper!

It takes a highly-skilled technician with experience and patience to draw it out with the right technology without eroding or degrading the original surface.

That’s why you need to call us BEFORE you do anything. The sooner the better since the cost of removing recently applied graffiti is less than if you let it settle…

did you know that:

• Most graffiti removal companies fail within 5 years due to the technical and legislative complexities (The Graffiti eaters have been around for over 35 years – that’s seven TImes lOnGer than the industry average!)

• If used by unskilled people, even mild chemicals can damage Colorbond, signage and paintwork.• 20% of the work The Graffiti Eaters get called in to do is fixing up the poor

quality work of other graffiti removal companies, or worse – unqualified cleaning companies.

• you are legally responsible for the tradespeople you have on site and the safety of the work they do!• Repairworkresultingfromapplicationofincorrecttechniquescanbe5timesmoreexpensive

hiring The Graffiti Eaters Costs less! Because we have the right equipment we can save you up to 45% billable time onsite when compared to our competitors who don’t have this specialised equipment.

We will remove the graffiti or stains, safely and within the stated quotation. We employ only experienced and knowledgeable professionals who have been thoroughly trained using only our own cutting-edge graffiti removal methods, science and techniques.

Many removal companies can only remove graffiti from simple surfaces and resort to abrasive techniques or the quick-and-easy ‘paint over’ solution. But, we specialise in those ‘tough’ jobs that require an extraordinary level of skill, patience and experience to restore any surface to its original condition.

After all, if you Want It Off, We’ll Get It Off! That’s our promise, our guarantee.

Qualified technician arrives on site to assess the correct removal method required. Site risk assessment is conducted.

The cleaning solution is allowed to ‘dwell.’ As it softens the graffiti, it breaks down the molecular structure and draws the paint to the surface.

Now that graffiti is dissolved, water under pressure is used to throughly rince every crevice.

Proprietary cleaning solution is mixed on site to suit the graffiti and surface type and applied to the graffiti.

Graffiti that is now on the surface is removed with a second treatment of cleaning solution and any underlying shadows now targeted.

The final result is a perfectly clean wall with no shadows left behind or surface damage sustained. A wall correctly cleaned, can be cleaned thousands of times.
