SUPERVISION & PROGRAM PROGRESSTo ensure you have a high quality graduate experience, the FGSR provides advice to departments and hosts workshops on graduate student supervision for faculty. If you have any issues or concerns about supervision or your program, first consult with your supervisor and graduate coordinator. For unresolved issues you may contact a FGSR Program Services advisor and one of FGSR’s Associate Deans, who are available to guide you and provide counsel.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER OUTREACH PROGRAMVolunteering through the FGSR’s outreach program offers graduate students an opportunity to share their research knowledge and experience with young Edmontonians attending kindergarten through grade 12.

More than 500 graduate students volunteer in our outreach activities each year, inspiring tomorrow’s leaders and thinkers.

Ethics TrainingUAlberta was the first major Canadian university to integrate ethics and academic training into all graduate programs. Check with your advisor/supervisor to ensure you meet the requirements.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTDeveloping marketable professional skills is an integral part of graduate student programs at UAlberta. Students have a variety of opportunities to build career portfolios and hone their skills by attending professional development weeks, seminars, workshops, networking events, accessing online modules, and participating in the Graduate Teaching and Learning Program.

THESES & EXAMSFor students in thesis-based programs, the thesis and final exam is the culmination of your research efforts. Producing a body of work that will be shared with the library collections and databases is a highlight of your graduate career. While your department has answers to most of your questions, FGSR provides guidelines for formatting and layouts, file types and deadlines. A thesis can be submitted online after a successful final examination (thesis defense).
