CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
is a classification using the main division and subdivisions of a scheme without breaking down into a narrower concepts.
![Page 6: Graduate School UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO Davao City](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022070409/56814477550346895db10fa4/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
is a number on a library item consisting of classification, a book number and often a locating symbol.

means specifically defined division in a system of classification; a class.

Categorization is the process in which ideas and objects are recognized, differentiated and understood.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT

Categorization implies that objects are grouped into categories, usually for some specific purpose.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
![Page 10: Graduate School UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO Davao City](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022070409/56814477550346895db10fa4/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Classical Categorization comes to us first from Plato, who, in his Statesman dialogue, introduces the approach of grouping objects based on their similar properties.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
![Page 11: Graduate School UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO Davao City](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022070409/56814477550346895db10fa4/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
This approach was further explored and systematized by Aristotle in his Categories treatise, where he analyzes the differences between classes and objects.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
![Page 12: Graduate School UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO Davao City](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022070409/56814477550346895db10fa4/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Aristotle also applied intensively the classical categorization scheme in his approach to the classification of living beings (which uses the technique of applying successive narrowing questions such as "Is it an animal or vegetable?", "How many feet does it have?", "Does it have fur or feathers?", "Can it fly?"...), establishing this way is the basis for natural taxonomy.
CATEGORIZATION, CLASSIFICATION & ARRANGEMENT
![Page 13: Graduate School UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO Davao City](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022070409/56814477550346895db10fa4/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
The classical Aristotelian view claims that categories are discrete entities characterized
by a set of properties which are shared by their members.
According to the classical view, categories should be clearly defined, mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive. This way, any entity of the given classification universe belongs unequivocally to one, and only one, of the proposed categories.

The Expansive Classification system is a library classification system devised by Charles Ammi Cutter. It uses all letters rather than digits (such as Dewey Decimal Classification) or a mixture of digits (such as Library of Congress classification), and was the basis for the top categories of the Library of Congress classification.
