The Central Engineering Department Graduate engineers are selected to ultimately become technical specialists within the department. The Central Engineering Department comprises of a number of technical specialist functions which provide design and engineering support to projects driving the ‘Win & Execute’ phases of our projects.

Bundles DesignThe Bundle Design team sits within Subsea 7’s Central Engineering department and conducts the design and installation analysis of Subsea 7’s Bundle (towed production system) product. The team interface routinely with other departments within Central Engineering and throughout the wider Subsea 7 community offering the opportunity to gain a broad understanding of operations.

This is a multidisciplinary team where graduates from a range of backgrounds in Naval Architecture, Civil and Mechanical Engineering or those with a relevant post graduate qualification, would fit in well.

Controls & UmbilicalsSubsea 7’s Controls & Umbilicals group provides technical support for a range of activities and our level of involvement will depend on the scope of work for projects and studies. This may include input to overall Field Development, FEED Studies, Generation of Specifications, Package Management for Procurement of Umbilicals or In-Bundle Cables and Tubing, General Engineering, Managing/Witnessing of FAT and SITs and Pre-Commissioning. The Controls & Umbilicals group may be involved in a wide range of activities, therefore prospective Graduate Engineers with a degree in both Mechanical and Electrical Engineering would be better suited to this group.

Flow Assurance/Process EngineeringThe UK Flow Assurance team provides support on all Process and Flow Assurance issues associated with Subsea 7’s operations, from conceptual to detailed engineering in order to keep the flow path open, maintain the production throughout the operating life and minimise downtime for remedial work, while providing a safe, reliable, cost-effective and fit-for purpose design, which gives flow assurance for the field life and offers enhanced production and recovery. The Flow Assurance team routinely interfaces with tender and project teams and offer range of analytical and more practically flow assurance solutions. This would be suitable for applicants from a Chemical engineering degree background.

Geotechnical EngineeringThe UK Geotechnical team forms part of a global Community of Excellence within Subsea 7 and is part of the Specialist Technical Services group within UK Central Engineering. The team provides support on all geotechnical issues associated with Subsea 7’s operations, from site investigation and route appraisal to detailed design and installation of subsea foundations. It also provides support on anchor systems, pipe-soil interaction analysis, seabed preparation, trenching/backfilling and rockdumping engineering and supervision.

The team offers a range of analytical and more practically oriented roles both onshore and offshore, which are primarily suited to graduates with a strong Civil Engineering background or with a Master’s degree or similar specific to Geotechnical engineering.

PipelinesThe Pipelines team within Central Engineering provides design and installation support related to rigid and flexible pipelines. This primarily entails design of pipelines and risers against failure due to installation, operating and environmental conditions.

Engineers in the team get extensive exposure to various vessels in the Group Fleet, various analysis software to do the design work, specialist training and support from specialist pipeline engineers working in different offices of the Group. Interaction with other design disciplines within the Group, such as projects, operations, clients, design houses, suppliers and regulatory bodies is routine. The Pipelines team is ideally suited for Graduate Engineers, with typically Civil, Structural, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture background.

PipingPiping Engineering is a very diverse discipline covering the designing of various subsea manifolds, bundle towheads and tie-in spools by performing the required calculations including pipe stress analysis. In addition to specifying the required piping materials Piping Engineers need to select and specify various subsea valves.

Piping Engineers need to support project procurement, fabrication and installation activities by co-ordinating with various internal groups. Piping Engineers should have a Mechanical Engineering degree with sound knowledge of mechanics of materials to perform calculations related to bending moments, stress strain relationships and fatigue issues.

Pre-CommissioningPre-commissioning is defined as the process of proving the ability of a pipeline to contain fluid without leaking. It is a series of operations performed prior to the introduction of ‘live’ hydrocarbons into a pipeline at start-up. The Pre-Commissioning department deals with all avenues of work from onshore to vessels and platforms all over the North Sea and beyond. The main activities performed during the pre-commissioning phase are pipeline cleaning, gauging, flooding, hydro-testing, dewatering and drying. Subsea 7 provide pre-commissioning expertise wherever it is required, across all business territories.

This is a multidisciplinary team where graduates from a range of backgrounds in Naval Architecture, Civil and Mechanical Engineering or those with a relevant post graduate qualification, would fit in well.

Safety Engineering & Technical RiskThe Safety Engineering & Technical Risk department provides specialist support to multiple subsea projects in the North Sea and other territories. In the role of Specialist Technical Service within Central Engineering, the primarily focus is on mitigating technical risk by undertaking safety studies and quantitative risk assessment. Typical activities and studies include, Reliability Engineering, Quantitative Risk Assessment, Dropped Object Studies, Subsea Plume Analysis and Isolation Assessments for subsea intervention.

Graduate Engineers that would be most suited for this role come from a wide range of engineering or science degrees including Chemical, Civil and Mechanical engineering; however other degrees from appropriate disciplines may also be considered.

Structural EngineeringThe UK Structural Engineering team provides structural design and analysis support to all areas of Subsea 7’s operations. From detailed design of offshore structures such as subsea production manifolds, riser caissons and specialist structural FEA analysis, to the support of offshore project execution through heavy lift and vessel equipment securing design. A role within the Structures group would suit a candidate with an interest in the detailed design and analysis of steel structures from a degree background such as Naval Architecture, Aeronautical, Civil and Mechanical engineering, or those with a relevant post graduate qualification.

Welding & MaterialsWelding & Materials is a multi-disciplined team within Central Engineering that provides specialist design support relating to welding, NDE, materials selection, materials processing, corrosion mitigation, CP design, coatings, and failure analysis. Activities focus on supporting the design and manufacture of subsea infrastructure such as pipelines, pipeline bundles, risers, towheads, manifolds and associated structures.

Engineers are exposed to a wide range of both metallic and polymeric materials and opportunities exist to develop as either generalists within the broader discipline outline or to specialise. Graduate Engineers, with typically materials engineering (or related) degrees and/or other degrees with a relevant post grad qualification are ideally suited to Welding & Materials.

Life-of-Field The Life-of-Field group acts in conjunction with the Graduate Engineering Development Scheme and is open to graduates with either a BEng or MEng degree (or equivalent) accredited by the Engineering Council UK and approved by the relevant professional institution in order to meet the requirements of IEng or CEng accreditation. The Life-of-Field group is an umbrella for subdivisions that act on behalf of clients when projects move into the operational phase of the life cycle. Subsea 7 recognises the importance of continuous and efficient operation of oil and gas assets over many years in order to maximise the return on our clients’ initial investments. We deliver a full life-cycle suite of services including Survey, Inspection, Integrity Management and Intervention and Autonomous Systems (IAS) to support not only the initial development of subsea oil and gas fields but also the maintenance and integrity management of these assets throughout their producing life.

Our offshore activities are delivered by highly experienced crews on a fleet of dynamically positioned diving support, ROV support and multipurpose vessels which rank amongst the largest, most modern and technically advanced in the world.

Graduates will be assigned to the most appropriate placement departments (subject to operational requirements) to allow them to meet the requirements of the Learning Plan and of the professional institution. Placement durations will typically be between 3 and 12 months.

Testimonials

Calum Robb Graduate Engineer - Pre-Commissioning

Robert Dicken Graduate Engineer - Bundles

Subsea 7 has delivered on all of my expectations and more – it’s fast paced, exciting and friendly.

I went to high school in Edinburgh before studying for a MEng in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 2010.

As part of the Graduate Engineering Development Scheme I get to work on real projects and have been given significant responsibilities from an early stage. This has offered me a great opportunity to develop my skills as a professional engineer. However, there is a strong support network of mentors and managers who ensure that I don’t become overawed with my workload and ensure that I’m meeting development targets.

For me the most appealing aspect of Subsea 7 was the vast range of opportunities that were available as a graduate.

The graduate rotations allow each graduate to experience different aspects of the business and different types of engineering which provides the opportunity to identify where you want to focus your career.

There were many factors that drew me to Subsea 7, in particular the opportunity to travel and gain offshore experience.

Lyndsey Muir Graduate Engineer

Lewis Geddes Graduate Engineer

After gaining a 1st class Masters degree in Civil Engineering, Design & Management at the University of Dundee I was lucky enough to gain a place on the GEDS Scheme at Subsea 7.

The variety of the program and getting involved in design work where I could put the theory I had learnt during my degree into practice, but also getting to go offshore to see the work I was involved in take place has been fantastic. The department rotations within the scheme are ideal at allowing me to do this. Of course the opportunity to go to Paris and Stavanger for graduate training was also very appealing and I have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the Scheme.

After finishing my Masters in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, I moved to Aberdeen to take up my place on the GEDS scheme with Subsea 7.

I am thoroughly enjoying the varied experiences available as well as the three off-the-job training seminars in Aberdeen, Paris and Stavanger.

GEDS has given me experience of many different aspects of subsea project delivery including, design, project engineering, supply chain, commercial, as well as the chance to follow a project offshore.
