• Thesis Registration
– Must be continuous once started, exceptions only for approved Leave of Absence
– May precede or follow proposal depending on Department
• Defense
– Must happen no less than 4 months after the proposal for Master’s students
– … 8 months … for PhD students
– Thesis defense form is available as a downloadable, fillable PDF
– GC General Forms (Master's Thesis/Project Form; PhD Thesis Form)
– To be signed by advisor and committee
• Library Submission
– Submit the final/corrected thesis
– Obtain a receipt of thesis submission
• Academic Clearance (Office of the Registrar, Mrs. Huda Nakad)
– Submit signed thesis defense form and library receipt
What does a thesis proposal consist of?
• The requirements of the proposal are determined by the Department
• Minimum requirements: Committee & Topic
Who approves the thesis proposal?
• Thesis committee
• Department Chair
• Faculty Graduate Studies Committee
• For PhD only: additional approval by Graduate Council
What about human or animal subject research?
• Must indicate if the research involves human subject research or animal related research
• Must seek approval from the Institutional Review Board or Animal Care Committee

Committee Make-up
• Master’s Thesis/Project Committee
– At least three members of professorial rank (including thesis advisor)
– At least four members if there is a co-advisor
– Normally, two members of the committee from student’s department
– For interdisciplinary programs, members are from AUB full time faculty members
– Thesis advisor can be from another department, but must coordinate with the Departmental Chairperson
• PhD Thesis Committee
– At least five members
– Two members must be from outside AUB
– Officially, there is one thesis advisor (e.g., in terms of signatures on forms etc.), co-advisor can operate as such, but one name is officially recognized
– Thesis advisor and at least three members must be of professorial rank
– All members must be PhD holders in a relevant field
