FRUIT group Fuel up with fruits at meals or snacks. Pears, watermelon, plums, raisins, berries, and applesauce (without extra sugar) are just a few of the great choices. Make sure your fruit juice is 100% juice. Fruits have nutrients called vitamins and minerals that keep us healthy. GRAINS are another food group on MyPlate . Make a least half of your grains whole grains. Whole grains give us fiber. Fiber helps keep our insides healthy. Choose whole-grain foods, such as whole-wheat bread, oatmeal, whole-wheat tortillas, brown rice, and popcorn, more often. PROTEIN Protein is a nutrient found in foods like meat, chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, nuts, and beans. Vary your protein foods. Try fish, shellfish, bean, and peas more often. Protein is important in helping us grow and develop. It builds strong muscles. Let me see you all make a muscle. DAIRY Dairy foods have a key nutrient called Calcium. Get your calcium-rich foods daily. Choose fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese at meals or snacks. Dairy foods contain calcium for strong bones and healthy teeth. Not every meal or snack has to have a food from all five food groups, but try to eat a variety of foods from all groups each day. If your breakfast is missing a vegetable, have it as a snack, such as carrot sticks.

My Plate is a guide to eating healthy. It shows us the foods that we need to eat to keep our bodies healthy and strong. When we eat from each of the food groups on My Plate, we are making healthy choices that will help our bodies to work at its best. Our bodies are like cars, and what does a car need to run? Gas or fuel. Food is the fuel our bodies need to run. If we don’t give our bodies the right type of fuel, our bodies may not run as well. Healthy foods are the healthiest fuel we can give our bodies, and MyPlate helps us to choose those types of food. The foods are broken up into food groups based on how they help our bodies.

Unscramble the words below to discover the 5 food groups found on MyPlate: RFUTI ___________________ VGETEALBE ___________________ RNGAIS ___________________ PRTENI ___________________ AIRDY ___________________

VEGETABLE group Vegetables are parts of a plant that we eat. Color your plate with great tasting veggies. Try to eat more dark-green, red, and orange vegetables, and beans and peas. Examples of veggies are broccoli, carrots, peas, and green beans. Half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables.

Answers to Word Scramble: Fruit, Vegetable, Grains, Protein, & Dairy

Color your MyPlate to make it colorful using the colors given: Fruits-Red, Vegetables-Green, Grains-Orange, Protein-Purple & Dairy-Blue

If you want to feel better, have energy and do good in school dedicate 60 minutes out of your day to physical activity. Physical activity can be fun! And you don’t have to do it all at one time-space it out throughout the day. Invite your family to join you. This month we will highlight some fun family activities that you can do during commercial breaks when watching television. Take pictures of you and your family doing the activities and include them in your 4-H portfolio!

Frozen Vocabulary Supplies: Vocabulary or Spelling Words Directions: This is a great activity to practice vocabulary or spelling words during homework time. Have your parent or sibling call out a physical activity, such as “Jog in place!”, “Jumping jacks!”, or “Touch your toes ten times!”. Both of you do it together until the adult or sibling calls out a vocabulary or spelling word. The youth freezes until they use the word correctly in a sentence or spells the word correctly. Repeat by calling out new activities and new words.

Go Bananas Dance-“Go Bananas” as a Family with this Banana Dance Supplies: None Bananas are a great snack food that offers potassium and energy. The Go Bananas dance can be a fun way to get moving during commercials while watching television as a family. The dance goes as follows: 1-Say: Grow bananas, grow, grow bananas DO: Raise 1 arm slowly until overhead. Repeat the phrase and raise the other arm overhead. 2-Say: Peel bananas, peel, peel bananas. Do: Slowly lower 1 arm. Repeat the phrase and lower the other arm. 3-Say: Mash bananas, mash, mash bananas. Do: Stomp on the floor and repeat. 4-Say: Go bananas, go, go bananas. Do: Jump up and down and go bananas! Repeat 2 or 3 times.

Fit 2 Be Me– Get MOVING during commercial breaks

Overcoming Obstacles Supplies: Chairs, newsprint, and string or rope Directions: Create an obstacle course in your house or outside. Create mazes or obstacles with your rope. Design a course of stepping stones made of newsprint. Set some of your newsprint stones far apart-it makes you stretch! Create a tunnel or other obstacles using chairs, cushions, and tables. Crawl under, over, and around the obstacles you create. Use your imagination to create a challenging course. See who can finish the course first and try to improve your time each time.
