Grade Anywhere™ on your iPad
Preparation: You will need an iPad with the administration rights to install a new app
You will also need to have set up an assignment within MOLE and received some student
submissions.
In the first part, you will need access to a computer as well as your iPad
Time needed: 20mins-30mins
What are the potential benefits? There are several potential benefits for using the iPad app for marking student assignments: Offline: You can mark without needing an Internet connection. As long as you have power in the iPad then that is all you need to start marking. There is one caveat: to synchronise with the main system you will need a wifi connection -both to download the assignments before you begin, and once you have finished your marking. As an example, if you know you will be on a long train journey, you can download your assignments to your iPad before you go, spend the train journey marking without any Internet connection and then connect to the Internet again when you are in wifi contact and this will upload your marking to the Turnitin software. Flexibility: The iPad allows you to mark wherever you choose. You don't need to be tied to an office desktop. Speed: Some academics are reporting that they are finding the process of marking on an iPad quicker and easier than on a computer. This is due to both how you move through the papers (the two fingers side swipe), and how you use your fingers to put the QuickMarks and feedback commentary on the paper itself. Access: Access is easy once the Turnitin App is set up. Switch on the iPad, access the App and you're ready to go. No need to log into the desktop, wait for everything to load, access MOLE, find your assignment etc.

You will be asked to create a passcode. This is so that no one else can access your work or your students’ work.
You will need to type it in twice. This then takes you to the main screen:

4. Marking an assignment and giving feedback on your iPad
Click on MOLE
The name of your course should now appear on the left of the screen. Click on it.
Then you will see the name of your assignment. Click on it.
A list of all the assignments submitted by your students will appear.
As you click on the first assignment in the list a message appears saying: “Sync Submissions – Fetch all paper for this assignment and keep the assignment updated with new papers?” – Click ‘Sync Submissions’.
Click on the first assignment again to open it. There are four main features here. They are exactly the same features you would find in the desktop version, but with slightly different access. There are:
Adding QuickMark® comments and highlights
voice comments
originality report access
grading using Rubrics Comments marks and highlights: Click on the paper you wish to mark and it will open. When you find a point you where you would like to place a comment, press your finger onto the screen for 2 seconds and you will get the choice of putting in a QuickMark, free text comment or strike-through text.
To complete an action, tap outside the pop-up window, on the iPad. To remove any comments, double-tap on the ‘bubble’ comment and then click the ‘bin’ icon.
Clicking on QM gives you the ability to add a Quick Mark comment and choose which colour you use for highlighting the text. Use the blue slider marks to select the exact piece of text on which you want to comment. To access further quick marks click on the menu in the top right-hand corner of the pop-up window.
Clicking on this box allows you to type a free-hand comment. Again, you can
select a colour for your highlighting.
Strike-through will cross out whichever text is highlighted at the time.

To delete a strike-through, click on the text that has the strike-through and a bin appears – click on it and the text will be reinstated. Tapping once quickly on the screen gives an ‘inline text’ option, in place of the strikethrough:
Originality report scores and matches:
Voice comment and general comments:
Moving through papers: When you have finished grading the assignment you can use a two-finger swipe from right to left to move onto the next paper. Synchronise:
The T button will allow you to add ‘inline
text’ – this is text that will appear directly on
the paper. These work best on work that is
double-line spaced. Click and hold it to drag
if it is not quite in the right place.
Choosing the graph icon at the top right gives you the option of viewing the
originality report score for the submissions and any matching text is highlighted.
Moving the slider at the top of the pop-up box will highlight the text that is
matching on the assignment.
Clicking the pencil icon brings up a window allowing you to leave a voice comment, some general commentary and to add a grade (left hand side). You are also given some statistical information regarding the paper, including word count and date/time of submission on the left hand side of this screen. Rubrics: If you have attached a Rubric to this assignment (you must do this from the desktop version of Turnitin), you can access it here. If you have chosen a quantitative Rubric, you can select from the various criteria to allow Turnitin to calculate the grade for you.
Once you have finished marking, if you have been marking offline (not connected to the
Internet), then you will need to press the ‘sync’ button once you are reconnected to a
wifi connection. To do this, select the circular arrow at the top right-hand side of the
main screen and click ‘Synchronise now’. If you are marking whilst connected to a wifi
connection, then the sync will happen automatically.
