SCO 3.15: critically analyze industry's impact on body image and healthy eating
You will work in partnerships to complete the ten tasks in this lesson.
Body Image
Body image refers to:
-How you view your physical self
-How you feel about how you look
-How you feel others view your physical appearance
-A person’s feelings about the sexual attractiveness of his/her body
Body Image
The fact is, we all come in different shapes and sizes and we can’t all look the same.
(Nor would we want that!)
Body Image
Throughout history it has been extremely difficult for people to live up to the standards of society and what they believe the ideal body is. There are many factors that lead to a person’s body image, some of these include:
•family dynamics•biological predispositions (e.g., depression and anxiety)•cultural expectations (e.g., media and politics)•peer pressure
People are constantly told and shown the cosmetic appeal of weight loss and are warned about the risks of obesity; this is something that can lead to a change in a person’s body image.

Self Esteem
Self Esteem and
Body Image
Self Esteem: Self esteem is your opinion of yourself. High self esteem is a good opinion of yourself and low self esteem is a bad opinion of yourself.
Task #2Answer the following questions:
1. What makes a body healthy?
2. Do you have to be thin to be healthy? Explain.
3. How might wanting to look like the people we see on television and in magazines be a negative thing?
Possible answers…1. Balanced diet, exercise, lots of sleep, low stress in life etc.
2. Not all thin people are healthy. They might have eating disorders that starve their bodies or they’re simply not getting the nutrients their bodies need to perform properly. Also, a thin person might be less healthy in terms of cardiovascular (heart) and lung function.
3. People who desperately want to be thin may develop eating disorders, exercise obsessively, or turn to smoking or drugs as a way to control appetite. They may develop low self esteem and become depressed if they can't change the way they look.
Task #3Answer the following questions:
1. Do you think that it is important to have cool clothes and accessories? Circle one answer.
Very Important Somewhat Important Not Important
2. Think carefully. Which of these groups has the most influence on what you consider to be cool? Why?
•your friends •kids you know who are a little older than you •kids who are really popular •celebrities / media
3. Name the first five brand names that come to mind for stuff like clothing, food, sports items and games. (Don't think about it, just write down the first five brand names that come to mind!)
Task #4 What makes a person ‘cool’?
Brainstorm traits that define someone as cool:
Is “cool” more external or internal? Explain.
Is it external - the way they look, or the way they dress?or
Is it internal - the way they act?
Think of your friends and what is really important. Write five things that are important to you in a friend.
Why do you think our society puts so much emphasis on the outward appearance?
Advertising and Body Image
Task #5: Advertising messages
Choose an advertisement (from a magazine) that uses body image to sell and answer the following questions: (attach or glue your ad on the back!)
1.What is this advertisement selling?
2.What are the physical traits/characteristics of the person/people in the ad?
3. What are some of the sub messages presented about society and the roles of men or women?
