WELL-KNOWN/ FAMOUS FILIPINO PAINTERS

Josef Luciano Dans (1805-1870) -one of the earliest recorded painters in the Philippines who painted the two artworks to be found in paete, Laguna Church- the Langit, Lupa at Impierno and the Purgatorio.

Langit, Lupa at Impierno (Heaven, Earth and Hell) - a three level painting which shows the Holy Trinity, Mary the mother of Christ, The Seven Blessed Sacraments and macabre depicion of hell.

Purgatorio - (Purgatory)- shows the eight forms of punishment the soul passes through for cleansing before reaching heaven.

Estevan Villanueva- 19th century painter from Vigan, Ilocos Sur who painted in 14 panels the events about the Basi Revolt.

Jose Loden, Tomas Nazario, and Miguel de los Reyes- Tagalog painters who did the first still life painting in the country.

The Conquest of the Batanes - the earliest known historical painting in the Philippines painted in the year 1783. It is a mural at the Palacio Royale (Royal Palace) in Intamuros

Antonio “ Tony” Velasquez•Born on October 29,1910 and died in 1997 at the age of 86.•Filipino illustrator regarded as the Father of Tagalog comics and as the pioneer and founding father of the Philippine comics industry. He was the creator of Kenkoy, an “iconic Philippine comic strip character”.

Antonio “ Tony” Velasquez• In 1928, Velasquez – together with script writer

Romualdo Ramos – created Kenkoy, a “Filipino comic star” character that first appeared in the Tagalog-language Liwayway magazine on 11 January 1929.In 1932, he also created the female equivalent of Kenkoy, Ponyang Halobaybay, a typical portrait of the Filipina woman in American-era Philippines. Other cartoon characters soon followed like Nanong Pandak, Talakitok, Talimusak, and Tinyente Dikyam.

Antonio “ Tony” Velasquez• In 1947, Velasquez retired from Liwayway

magazine to create the publishing firm Ace Publication, a mass producer of Philippine comic books. Through Ace Publication, Velasquez was able to produce “some of the best” and “most popular” Philippine comic books, such as Pilipino Komiks (1947), Tagalog Klasiks (1949), Hiwaga Komiks (1950), Espesyal Komiks (1952), Kenkoy Komiks (1959), and Educational Klasiks Komiks (1961).

Antonio “ Tony” Velasquez• In 1962, Velasquez had to close Ace

Publication due a labor dispute. Afterwards, Velasquez established the Graphic Arts Service, Inc. (also known as GASI Publications). Through GASI Publications, Velasquez was able to produce Philippine comic books such as Pinoy Komiks, Pinoy Klasiks, Aliwan Komiks, Holiday Komiks, Teens Weekly Komiks, and Pioneer Komiks.

Galo B. Ocampo•Born in Sta. Rita, Pampanga on October 16, 1913 and died in Virginia, USA on September12 1983. •He studied at the University of the Philippines and holds the distinction of being the only Filipino to study heraldry abroad and to hold membership in the International Institute of Genealogy and Heraldry in Madrid.

Ang KiukokBorn: March 1, 1931, Davao CityDied: May 9, 2005, Quezon City Ang Kiukok died of prostate cancer at the age of 74. He was survived by his wife,Mary de Jesus and four children.

2001 -President Gloria Macapaganal-Arroyo named him a National Artist for visual arts.

Ang KiukokAng Kiukok, an ethnic Chinese painter who studied under Vincente Manansala.Used expressionist style fused with Cubist, Surrealist and Expressionist aspects. He was born to immigrant Chinese parents, Vicente Ang and Chin Lim. He was an only son with five sisters, born to Chinese immigrants from Fukien; Vicente Ang and Chin Lim. His father wanted to name him Hua Shing, meaning "Chinese-born", but decided to look for another name when he learned that his cousin's son had been given the same name. Worried about China's fate against the invading Manchurians at that time, his father named him Kiukok, which means "save the country."

Ang KiukokKiukok's first formal recognition came in the form of a third prize award in the Shell National Students Art Competition for Calesa in 1953.

The urging of Vicente Manansala, Kiukok launched his first one-man show at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in 1954. After that he earned numerous awards from the Art Association of the Philippines

Benedicto “BenCab” CabreraBorn on August 27, 1942 in Malabon, Rizal. (Age 72)

2006- awarded National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts (Painting). He has been noted as "arguably the best-selling painter of his generation of Filipino artists.

Benedicto “BenCab” Cabrera• BenCab was born to Democrito Cabrera and

Isabel Reyes He was the youngest of nine children. BenCab's first exposure and discovery of the arts happened through his elder Brother Salvador, who was already an established artist during Bencab's childhood.

• He went on to study at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, where he explored different art visual forms - photography, draftsmanship, printmaking - while honing his chosen craft as a painter. He received his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in 1963.

ARTURO ROGERIO LUZBorn on November 20, 1926 also a known printmaker, sculptor, designer and art administrator. A founding member of the modern Neo-realist school in Philippine art, he received the National Artist Award, the country's highest accolade in the arts, in 1997.

He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, the Art School of the Brooklyn Museum in New York, and the Académie Grande Chaumière in Paris and received a diploma from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1994.
