Pill Bugs

Pill bugs are related to crayfish crabs and lobsters

Pill bugs are sometimes called wood lice but they are not related to lice or insects They do not Jite earry diseases or do any harm to humans

Pill bugs are called isopods because they have legs ofthe same size

FAMILY NAMES

Pill bugs belong to a family of creatures called crustaceans They are related to shrimp lobsters and crabs Pill bugs belong to a group of crustaceans called isopods Most isopods live in the water but pill bugs are some of the few species that live on land Some of the names for these land isopods include sow bugs wood lice and rolyshypollies These animals are not insects but like insects pill bugs do have an exoskeleton ( outer protective shell) and legs with joints

There are two basic types of closely related pill bugs or wood lice Sow bugs curve up and form a hard shell like an arch for protection against predators Pill bugs have a series of slightly-curved plates which allow them to roll into a protective ball This ability also helps pill bugs retain their moisture in dry weather Pill bugs are usually blue or even light purple Sow bugs are usually gray or brown

HABITAT

The habitat usually enjoyed by pill bugs is dark damp areas under rocks rotting wood dead leaves and grass and similar places Pill bugs and sow bugs are decomposers They eat dead plant material and convert it into soil They are often active just beneath the surface of the moist soil and in_ masses of dead plant material They are plentiful in these areas Pill bugs are active on rainy damp and cloudy days Pill bugs and sow bugs are especially active at night when they are more protected from predators and the weather is cooler and wetter Pill bugs move slowly and are cold-blooded which means their body temperature is affected by the surrounding temperature of the air and soil

PILL BUG FEATURES

Pill bugs have three body parts head thorax and abdomen They have seven curved plates covering the thorax or mid-section of the animal Young pill bugs have six identical pairs of legs attached to the thorax The legs are about five millimeters long They acquire a seventh pair of legs after their first molt when they shed their skin in order to grow larger When pill bugs molt they crawl out of the back part of their skin first and the front half hours or days later Behind the thorax is the abdomen that is covered by six curved plates Pill bugs and sow bugs are about five to 18 millimeters long depending on their age

Pill bugs do not breathe through lungs They have gill-like structures that are used to get oxygen from air The body is slightly rounded side to side Pill bugs have two antennas about five millimeters long They have one pair of compound eyes Compound eyes see many different facets of a picture like a broken mirror Pill bugs have two uropods extending from the last segment at the rear of their bodies The uropods on sow bugs are longer than on pill bugs These uropods appear to function like rear antennas in sensing danger The female adult carries eggs in a pouch

under the thorax They stay in the pouch for about three weeks after hatching before going off on their own
