The Goat in the Rug Selection Summary
The Goat in the Rug Geraldine lived with her Navajo friend Glenmae.
Glenmae used Geraldine’s wool to weave a rug. After

Geraldine ate the lants. She thought they tasted
delicious! So Glenmae bought some dye at the store.
Glenmae boiled the dye. Then she started di ing

Giant of the Desert
A giant cactus grows in the desert. It has arms that shoot up to 14
the sky. Sometimes I think it looks like a giant person. 25
If you listen closely, you can hear the tap, tap of a bird 38
making holes in the cactus. The bird is making a nest. 49
I hear a little hoot. A tiny owl has moved into an old nest. 63
It hunts at night and sleeps in the nest in the daytime. The nest 77
stays cool, even in the hot sun. 84
Big birds make their homes in the cactus, too. Hawks make 95
nests of twigs. 98
In May, it is time for the cactus to bloom. Beautiful white and 111
yellow flowers open up at the tops of the stems. When the moon 124
is in the sky, bats come to the cactus. They drink the sweet juice 138
inside the flowers. 141
When the sun comes up, more animals discover the cactus 151
flowers. As they fly from bloom to bloom, they carry pollen with 163
them. The pollen helps the fruit begin to grow. 172
Birds and ants come to eat the cactus fruit. They also eat 184
the seeds that have fallen. Coyotes and other animals find food 195
at night. Over many years, the cactus grows tall. It is the giant of 209
the desert. 211
