Program: Community Center and Pool to serve surrounding community while incorporating sustainable design techniques.

Site: Current parking lot on corner of Downer Ave. and Park St. in Milwaukee, WI.

Approach: To create an inviting facility for the community while implementing sustainable design concepts which reduce the amount of storm water run off by the use of green roofs while using less energy by curtain walls with sun screens and solar panels.

daylighting studiesAbove are a series of storyboards which illustrate the different daylighting situations in the individual apartments throughout the day. This was done to show the signifi cant daylighting situations that occur despite the lack of southern exposure. Because the slender building has curtain walls that face east and west the amount of natural light that penetrates the apartments is signifi cant without being overbearing. The glass was treated to prevent heat gain and excessive glare while still allowing the space to function without the use of artifi cial lights. This can also help to reduce the amount of energy consumed by the development.

Program: Mixed use development to create private spaces for residents while inviting the public to retail and businesses on street level.

Site: Very slender site on 6th St. close to National Ave. in Milwaukee, WI. This site posed many challenges, not only was it slender it was also nestled between a busy street and a very busy freeway system.

Approach: One main focus was to make the residents feel privacy while wedged between two busy streets. Courtyards were created for this purpose while the freeway berm was landscaped into gardens for the residents to use in any way they wished. The street level also played with the sidewalk to make the businesses more inviting and attractive.

This page’s images were completed in the summer of 2009. I was studying in Europe at this time and did much of my learning through analysis of buildings in my travels. This page includes a few diagrams that I completed while abroad.

The sketch to the left depicts Ca d’ Oro in Venice as part of a study comparing Vivaldi to Venetian architecture. The studies below of the Villa Savoye examine Le Corbusier’s 5 Points of Architecture.

Field StudiesThe images on this page are works completed analyzing and studying buildings around Milwaukee, WI. These were introductory level sketches exploring different drawing techniques as well as research and analysis of existing and future buildings.

Alumni Center DevelopmentProgram: Site Plan Development to make additions to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee’s Alumni Center.

Site: UWM Alumni Center located on Lake Drive in Milwaukee, WI.

Approach: To make additions to the site which already houses an Alumni Center. There was to be a lecture hall, classrooms and hotel rooms. My design focused on the hotel rooms as found on the following pages. To the left is a hand rendered site plan as well as a site section.

These interior perspectives are views of the guest houses placed on the site. They are organized in such a way that they are terraced on the cliff. The terracing allows for green roofs to be placed above the lower units. This allows for guests to have patios while reducing the buildings’ foot print by reducing rainwater runoff. Many of the rooms not only have green roof patios but they also have views of Lake Michigan.

Photography: Europe 2009As part of my study abroad program in Paris and Italy there was a photography requirement. This was an amazing experience which allowed me to really focus on the importance and situation of buildings. Most images included are either from Paris, Rome or Venice.
