Dear Staff, Students, Parents and well wishers,
I am extremely happy to witness a lot of growth and development in our school. Our school has
taken a great leap in the quality of education. The school calls for an applaud. It has navigated its
way towards technology. Teachers and students are empowered with skills and understanding to
thrive in an interactive and information rich learning environment through enhanced technology.
We are also blessed with an amazing and dedicated faculty.
I express my gratitude to our teachers, Ms. Marian Misquitta, Mr.T.P. Singh and Ms. Celestine
Pinto who have retired this year. I wish you all fruitful years of retired life. I also express my
heartfelt congratulations to our Silver jubilarians, Ms. Sible Furtado and Ms. Loretta Pinto. They
are to be commended for their zeal, commitment and dedicated service to our institution.
I encourage all our teachers and the staff to continue working hard for the growth of our school.
We need to take special care of all the weaker students and the poor and equip them with learning
skills and support them financially.
I wish you successful service in your forthcoming years. I express my heartfelt gratitude for all
your support and love during the last six years of my service as a manager of Cardinal Gracias High
school. Special thanks to all the members of the Gracian Family. May God in His goodness bless
you and be with you and your families.
With Prayerful support and Love,

Manager’s Message
Graciana 2012-13
02
We express our gratitude to our Manager, Rev. Fr. Xavier Amirtham and our Principal, Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas
who have enlightened us with their invaluable messages, the pearls of wisdom. I take this opportunity to
thank those who have contributed in various ways to this school bulletin.
A great philosopher, Dr. John G. Hibben said, "Education is the ability to meet life's situation." Indeed life is
a mystery in every possible facet. Our life is certainly incomplete without the fulfillment of our dreams or the
gain of success. This is possible by letting education elucidate our life. Only education enables us to write our
successful story. We have every God-given prerogative to make our lives bewitching and splendid in the fields
we wish to specialize in. Well, our school hosts a range of activities showcasing brilliantly the diversity of
talent. It gives us immense pleasure to see our students burgeon into responsible citizens and climb the ladder
of success. Children, what we wish for you today is to progress in life with love, hope and optimism.
Hope makes life worth living
Welcome each day with a smile
Sorrows and Joys, Failures and successes
What is life without its countless trials?
So, sit back and relax as you cruise through the pages filled with fun-loving poems, jokes, riddles and many
more. The images and pictures of treasured moments are for your delight.

Another vibrant academic year with its academic, co-curricular and extracurricular activities is
coming to a close. The new uniforms added colour to the school; the Educomp Smart Boards have
made the teaching and learning process easier. I acknowledge and thank the Manager,
Rev. Fr. Xavier Amirtham, the teaching and non-teaching staff, the parents, the PTA, the retired
teachers and the Gracian Alumni for their support to the Gracian family. I express my gratitude
to the retired teachers, Ms. Marian Misquitta, Mr.T.P. Singh and Ms. Celestine Pinto and our
Silver jubilarians, Ms. Sible Furtado and Ms. Loretta Pinto for their dedicated service.
The biggest challenge of the teachers and parents in the modern age is the task of handling the
growing indiscipline of the students. Let us be pro-active, alert and realise the fact that students
are easily influenced by the ill effects of modern technology and communication media. They are
also influenced by parents, elders, teachers and peer group. Proper measures have to be taken
from early childhood itself because character formation begins from infancy. Indiscipline
results in low academic performance too. Since parents are the first teachers, their way of life
has a tremendous influence on the character formation of children. Parenting is an art. We need
to guide children at a tender age to develop good value system, form good habits and provide a
proper academic foundation.
Teachers need to continue to motivate and influence children. According to Henry
Adams "A teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops".
My dear children, with the proliferation of modern equipments and explosion of knowledge you
are bombarded with too many stimuli from all sides. Don't get carried away by wrong values
because you are precious to your parents and to the school. Make our school and parents proud, as
this year's academic theme goes "Be Smart and Grow Smart".
I wish the outgoing S.S.C. batch, best of luck for the exams for future studies and for a good
career. God bless you all abundantly.
Rev.Fr. Sabu Thomas O.Praem
Principal
The tremendous energy of children needs to be positively channeled
into various extra-curricular activities like sports and games, dance, music, art and craft, martial
arts and so on.

Cardinal Gracias High School is an esteemed institution in Bandra East which specially
caters to the all round development of the personality of students. There has been a
steady growth in the number of students. Our school has a qualified and experienced
faculty. It gives exposure to the students in Art, Theatre, Sports and the like. To evoke
the blessings and inculcate the spirit of gratitude towards the Lord, prayer services on
festivals and special prayer services are conducted every morning as per instructions
from Education Department and ABE. The Education Department organizes monthly
training programmes to upgrade the teachers with the new pattern of teaching
technique, evaluation tools and remedial teaching for the betterment of the students.
We strongly deem that the future of our country depends on the quality of education,
which our children receive in school. We accomplish our toil by providing the best tools to
our students who are the future nation builders. Knowledge is imparted through Edu -
comp digital teaching system, a user-friendly and innovative audio-visual aid which makes
the teaching-learning process more interesting. We have brought a new dimension to our
library. Our newly renovated library is well- ventilated and spacious with various
knowledge books for the enrichment and development of the students and staff.
The Management and staff as leaders work together to encourage and direct students to
address the numerous challenges of this world with sincerity, integrity and respect.
They have been working zealously to fulfill the dream of educating children. Opportunity
is given to every individual. Every promise is fulfilled with one goal to make our students
'Grow Smart & Be Smart'. Our students leave our portals with great convictions which
help them to stand tall in both personal and professional spheres. The scores of
professionals in the field of education, medicine, technology, law, entertainment, etc.

The Cockroach Theory for Self-development: Response Vs ReactionAt a restaurant, a cockroach suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on a lady. She started
screaming out of fear. With a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with
both her hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach.
Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also got panicky. The lady finally managed to
push the cockroach away but ...it landed on another lady in the group.
Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continue the drama.
The waitress rushed forward to their rescue. In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell
upon the waitress. The waitress stood firm, composed herself and observed the behaviour of the
cockroach on her dress. When she was confident enough, she grabbed it with her fingers and
threw it out of the restaurant.
Was the cockroach responsible for their histrionic behaviour?
If so, then why was the waitress not disturbed? She handled it to near perfection, without any
chaos. It is not the cockroach, but the inability of the ladies to handle the disturbance caused by
the cockroach that disturbed the ladies.
It is not the shouting of our parents, teacher or friends that disturbs us, but it's our inability to
handle the disturbances caused by their shouting that disturbs us.
It is not the traffic jams on the road that disturbs us, but our inability to handle the disturbance
caused by the traffic jam that disturbs us.
More than the problem, it's our reaction to the problem that creates chaos in our life.
Lessons learnt from the story:
We learn that we should not react in life. We should always respond. The women reacted, whereas
the waitress responded.
Reactions are always instinctive whereas responses are always well thought of, just and right to
save a situation from going out of hands, to avoid cracks in relationship, to avoid taking decisions in
anger, anxiety, stress or hurry.

Aids Awareness Programme
Std IX:
A simple cure for any disease such as AIDS in
addition to medicines is a strong support
from friends and family and a strong faith
and willpower. Many misconceptions are
prevalent and they can be disastrous. They
cause fear, dread and aversion for the
victims in society. It is important to eliminate
such delusions. Awareness is necessary. We
must make people realize that AIDS is not
contagious. It is caused due to various
reasons-blood transfusion, transmission
from infected mother to child and sharing of
razors by drug abusers. Spreading AIDS
awareness is the need of the hour. A general
acceptance in society will come with
awareness which will help people with AIDS
to lead better life.

Food for All with Green Revolution
Green revolution is a term used for the
agricultural revolution in the 1960's which
increased the production of food grains four -
five times in the north - western part of India.
The Green revo lut ion popu lar ized
technologies that had already existed
before, but had not been widely used outside
industrialized nations. These technologies
include modern irrigation projects,
pesticides, synthetic nitrogen fertilizer and
improved crop varieties developed through
the conventional science based methods
available at the time.
The novel technological development of the
green revolution was the production of novel
wheat cultivars. Agronomists bred cultivars
of wheat, maize and rice that are generally
referred to as HYVs or 'high yielding
varieties'. HYVs have higher nitrogen
absorbing potential than other varieties.
Since cereals that absorbed extra nitrogen
would typically lodge or fall over before
harvest, semi -dwarfing genes were bred into
their genomes. A Japanese dwarf wheat
cultivator (Norin 10 wheat), which was sent to
Washington D.C. by Cecil Salmon was
instrumental in developing green revolution
wheat cultivars. IR8 the first widely
implemented HYV rice to be developed by
IRRI, was created through a cross between
an Indonesian variety named "Peta" and a
Chinese variety named "Dee-geo woo - gen".
With advances in molecular genetics, the
mutant genes responsible for Arabidopsis
Thaliana genes [GA-20 oxidize, gal, gal-3],
wheat reduced height genes [Rht] and a rice
semi dwarf gene [sd1] were cloned. These
were identified as gibberellin bio synthesis
genes or cellular signaling component genes.
Stem growth in the mutant background is
significantly reduced leading to the dwarf
phenotype. Photo synthetic investment in
the stem is reduced dramatically as the
shorter plants are inherently more stable
mechanical ly . Assimilation becomes
redirected to grain production. There is no
doubt that a green revolution was brought
about by harnessing science and technology.
It heavily relies on chemical fertilizers,
pesticides and herbicides. Agricultural
output increased.
Thus Green revolution helped in satisfying
the appetite of millions as well as improving
the economy of the country.

Inter-house Essay Competition
Climatic changes occur when the Earth's
average temperature changes dramatically
over time. As little as one or two degrees can
be considered as dramatic change, because
the Earth's ecosystem depends on a very
delicate balance, and even small shifts can
have far reaching impact. A drop in average
temperature can also be considered as
dramatic change but people using the term,
are usually talking about global warming.
Variations in the behavior of the weather,
such as from one century to another are
referred to as climatic change. Climate itself
adjusts from the times of ice ages, (huge
sheets of ice covered large areas that are
currently ice-free) to today's ice sheets i.e.
glaciers, iceburgs etc. that are largely
confined to Antarctica, Greenland and the
floating Arctic sea ice.
The sun, of course, is the ultimate source of
heat energy reaching the earth, fueling the
weather systems and establishing our major
climate zones. However there is good
evidence that larger variations in the sun's
activity do occur. For example, during the
last half of the 17th century, there was a
period of greatly reduced solar activity.
Climate fluctuations, climatic trends,
climatic cycles and climatic change refer to
some appropriate time scales and can be used
only within such time scales. The evidences
of past climatic changes are many and
varied, such as biological, lithigenic and
morphological.

Climate Change
Corruption
More people exploit more natural resources,
cut more trees, produce more waste, use
more fossil fuels, build more roads, dams and
cities, pollute more soil, air and water, and
contribute greener house gases to the
atmosphere ultimately damaging the entire
environment and aggravating the climatic
changes.
There is an old saying 'Strike the iron while it
is hot'. This means that yes, now is the time
to act. If we wait for some other time, we may
miss the chance of saving our mother earth
and ourselves. Global warming is irreversible
but can still be prevented. Thus, man is
capable of influencing the global climate
deliberately and inadvertently through his
various actions and activities.
India is one of the developing nations in the
world. Why are our people so poor? Why are
thousands of people starving and homeless?
One of the important reasons for this is
corruption. Everyone wants to become rich
and lead a luxurious life as quickly as possible.
In the mad rush for riches, qualities like
honesty, sincerity, and efficiency are
sacrificed. We fail to realize that if society
benefits, we too will benefit. We bribe people
to get our work done quickly, knowing well
that it is wrong to do so.
There is corruption in every sphere of life in
India today. It begins with the admissions of
the tiny tots in nursery schools. It continues
Graciana 2012-13
29
even after a person is dead. The hospital
workers have to be bribed to speed up the
formalities of handing over the dead body.
Schools, colleges, government offices,
railway stations, police stations and even
courts are all a big part of the corruption
scene.
The main culprit behind corruption is the
politician. The politicians are the ones who
make the rules and laws. They need large
sums of money to fund their election
campaigns and for their large families to lead
luxurious lives. They get this money by
accepting large bribes openly or in the name
of donation.
We should refuse to give bribes to get our
work done. In the end, we should remember
that 'Honesty is the best policy'. Those who
cheat and are dishonest will always be
punished. We should also train our future
generation to be honest and sincere. Finally,
only if we are honest and sincere, we shall be
able to get good sleep.

In the past, people in India used to eat
healthy, freshly prepared food with their
families at home. Today however, many
people, particularly young people, prefer to
eat fast food such as hamburgers, fried
chicken, pizzas or franky. There are many
reasons why this change has occurred.
One of the main reasons for the popularity of
fast food is change in lifestyles. Many people
in India are working long hours or shifts. They
don't have the time to prepare good food.
Women too work in India and as a result less
time is available for preparing family meals.
Another cause is the huge number of young
affluent people in India. The rapid
development of the country has meant that
the young people who comprise over 75% of
the population have money to spend. The
third reason is advertising. India is a modern,
free market country, with all forms of media
such as internet and satellite television.
People like to try new products and different
kinds of fast food.
However, this change in diet can have some
serious effects on health. Many individuals
are becoming obese. These people will be less
productive and may suffer from heart
disease and diabetes. Another cause of fast
food culture is the decline in the family
tradition of eating together. Children and
adults rarely eat together now and get less
opportunity to talk. Another effect is on the
economy. Fast food is not very expensive.
But it is cheaper to have home cooked meals.
Most of the fast food companies have foreign
franchises. So capital leaves the country.
Although it is convenient and a tasty addition
to diet, it can have some serious effects.
People should learn to choose fast food
carefully and remember the pleasure of
eating good food in good company.Effects of Fast Food on Health

The Big Battle Ahead - Preparing for the S.S.C exams
Hello friends,
I am really honoured to share my
views, opinions and success
mantras with you. S.S.C exams are one of the
most important exams in our life. The main
ingredient in the formula of success is
performing consistently. Regular study is a
must. Dedicating 4-5 hours daily to serious
studies is essential. Don't study because you
have to but because you want to study. Revise
your lessons frequently. Give importance to
all the subjects. Keep a tab on the ongoings in
school. Pay careful attention to your teachers
in school because many of them are
examiners and moderators. The success
which I have achieved is the combined effort
of my school teachers, parents and my own
hard work.
Have 7-8 hours of sleep daily. Take a break
every 15 minutes when you are studying
seriously. Read news papers and watch and
listen to news on TV. It may help you in writing
personal response questions in your English
paper. You don't have to neglect your
hobbies. But you should know your limits. I
love reading and drawing. Hence, throughout
the year I took part in various competitions
which helped me to develop a versatile nature
and prevented me from being bored.
In this one year, you will be distracted by
many other things like special networking
sites, friends, etc. But study is your first
priority. By December, you should finish
studying 80% -90% of your syllabus. You
should be thorough with everything, one
month prior to the exams. And most
importantly 'pray'. Nothing comforts your
mind like a good prayer. I prayed 45 minutes
per day even during exams. Here are some
tips for subject wise study:
ã For languages read the lessons and
understand them. Practise grammar. Stress
on each grammar topic. In your leisure time,
read essay books. Find quotations, proverbs,
idioms, to improve your writing skills.
ã For Mathematics all you need to do is
practice the questions from solved examples
and problem sets.
ã For Science, understand the basic
concepts and memorize them. Do not neglect
diagrams and sums of physics.
ã For social studies, always prefer to study
the textbook because many questions were
asked from the textbook. Do not neglect
graphs and maps.
I think our school is better than any other
coaching class.Read your textbooks well as
'Text book is the mother of all publications'.
It is rightly said, 'The journey of 100 miles
starts with a single step'
I will conclude by saying 'Believe in yourself
and have a positive attitude. Have a
concentrated, planned and regular study.
Surely you will come out with flying colours.
All the Best.
“The HAPPIEST people
DO NOT necessarily
have the ‘BEST’ THINGS.
They simply
APPRECIATE the things
they have.”

Impressions...
Thirteen long years spent in this school have
transformed me from a small, shy child to a
young, confident teenager ready to face the
challenges of the world. C.G.H.S has nurtured
us students with love and care. We are
blessed with the best teaching fraternity as
well non-teaching staff. In moments of joys
and sorrows, they are always with us. The
teachers have made learning and
understanding the various subjects quick and
easy by adding wit and humour to every aspect
of the subject. My teachers and parents
instilled in me good values and ideas which will
always remain with me forever. Our school
encourages our students to excel in academics
as well as sports like football, basketball, kho-
kho and other games. The Educomp class was
always fun and an interactive, enjoyable and
exciting experience of learning. Bidding adieu
to our Alma Matter is very agonizing. It is
indeed a great pleasure to be a part of the
Gracian family.
I affectionately and sincerely thank our
principal Rev.Fr.Sabu Thomas for giving me
the opportunity to be the head boy for the
academic year 2012-2013. It was a great
experience for me to shoulder this
responsibility. I also thank our vice-principal,
Ms. Kusum Pramod, our supervisors and
teachers for their contribution in inculcating
values and making learning a fun filled
experience for us. I also thank all the teachers
and my friends who always inspired me and
guided me to organize various programmes and
the council members who supported me.

Bidding Adieu Adieu
With a heavy heart and a tear in my eye I
sit to pen a few lines…..
After spending thirteen years in this school,
it is extremely difficult to say 'Sayonara' to
Cardinal Gracias High School, our sweet
home. School days are indeed the golden days
which will never come back but the values and
knowledge we have received from school will
remain with us forever.
I remember the day when I stepped into this
esteemed institution as a tiny tot, all scared
to enter this big place, but after spending
thirteen years, I am confident and assured at
every step now. I am proud and fortunate to
be a part of this Gracian family. It has taught
me a number of things. It has taught me to be
a disciple of discipline and truth. It has
taught me to consider follies not as
disappointments but as valuable lessons
which give us encouragement to strive for
excellence. It has taught me that there is no
shortcut to success but only hard work and
faith in God can help us achieve great heights.
It is our school that teaches us to aim high
and at the same time understand our
capabilities and limitations.
As a Head Girl of this school, I was fortunate
to gain greater experience in conducting
various programmes which have made me a
responsible and a tough person. I thank the
Students’ Council and all my friends for
supporting me, whenever I needed them. I
take this opportunity to thank our dear

My School Journey
My school journey started way back in the
year 1999 when I got admission in Cardinal
Gracias High School. During my life in the
primary and pre-primary section, I was very
shy and wasn't known by any of my teachers.
But when I entered the secondary section in
5th std, I became a little bolder and started
to interact with my teachers and the other
students. And then my popularity in school
grew because I proved my mettle in sports. I
became a member of the students' council in
STD 8th. It was a great boost for my
confidence. I felt as if I was on the top of the
world. I had a few ups and downs. I had to deal
with some mischievous students. Sometimes
even I was mischievous and my badge was
taken away by my teachers but 'All is well
that ends well.'
Then arrived the 'Sports day'. Before that,
I strived very hard and practised all the
events. On the final day, I won five medals
and was also awarded the Championship
trophy. I felt as if I was the happiest person
on this planet!!! In std 9th, I didn't perform
well in the sports events. My performance in
academics also wasn't that good. But future
had something else in store for me. In std
9th, on the basis of my sports performance
in std 8th, due to the support of my teachers
and after a lot of interviews, I became the
'Sports Captain' of my school. It was a
matter of great honor and pride for me.
I considered myself the luckiest person on
the earth. I thanked my parents, teachers and
friends for their support and started my year
as a Sports Captain. Even though I had a few
ups and downs, I was well supported by my
parents and even by my council members. I
had to balance between my studies and the
duties of a sport captain. In the year 2012 -13
on sports day, I won 6 medals and was on the
verge of winning the Championship trophy but
I lost to my competitor. I felt very bad but I
am not a bad loser. I cheered and
congratulated the winner. I thank our dear
Principal, Rev. Fr. Sabu Thomas, Vice-Principal
Mrs. Kusum Pramod, Supervisors, dedicated
teachers and the entire non-teaching staff
members for their invaluable support
throughout my scholastic life.

Till we meet again…
Today, I look back to the day when I first
entered Cardinal Gracias High School as a
tiny tot. Tears roll down my eyes as the
journey that we had started 13 years ago is
coming to an end . As the sports captain of
the school, I would like to thank the entire
Gracian family for being a guiding light in our
life. Our principal and teachers have always
believed that a pat on the back is always
better than a slap on the wrist. I thank them
for being role models of kindness. According
to me, they are like angels. For them,
teaching is a zeal and learning an appetite. It
is difficult to draw a parallel to C.G.H.S. I can
rightly pride myself for being a part of such a
prestigious institution, which provided us
opportunities not only academically, but also
made sure that there is an overall
development of the students.
I will always cherish the fun-filled
experiences I had in C.G.H.S. It was a
pleasure working with the amazingly
enthusiastic members of the students
council. I am very thankful to our peon uncles,
who have always rendered a helping hand. I
will always be grateful to each and every
person in C.G.H.S. for being so supportive and
co-operative, genial and generous. In a few
months there will be no waking up for school ,
no recess bell , no P.T class and no more life in
C.G.H.S. but I believe that 'goodbyes are not
forever, goodbyes are not the end.' They
simply mean we will miss you until we meet
again.

I looked out and saw the sky
No white clouds were seen above.

Whether they rested somewhere over the

And soothed the earth of heat and pain.
Why did you disappear dark black clouds
Why did you leave us in pain
Why did you turn your face away

You Will Never Be Sorry
For thinking before acting,For hearing before judging,For forgiving your enemies,For being candid and frank,For helping a fallen brother,For being honest in business,For thinking before speaking,For standing by your principles,For stopping your ears to gossip,For bridling a slanderous tongue,For harboring only pure thoughts,For sympathizing with the afflicted,For being courteous and kind to all.
One day, I hopped into a taxi to go the airport. We were in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded and missed the other car by inches! The driver of the other car whipped his around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, "Why did you do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call," THE LAW OF THE GARBAGE TRUCK." He explained that many people are like garbage
trucks. They run around full of garbage: frustration, anger and disappointments. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they will dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets so ……Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.Life is 10% what you make it and 90% how you take it.

TONGUE TWISTERSI thought a thought.
But the thought I thought wasn't the thought I thought I thought.
If the thought I thought I thought had been the thought I thought, I wouldn't have thought so much.
If you understand, say "understand".
If you don't understand, say "don't understand".
But if you understand and say "don't understand".
How do I understand that you understand? Understand!
If you tell Tom to tell a tongue-twister his tongue will be twisted as tongue-twister twists tongues.
